Looks:Hanano is a Japanese person of tall and thin build. Her brown hair is short and somewhat wispy, not going down far past her ears. Her face is completely obscured by a kitsune mask. All visible skin on her body is covered with white bandages, mainly at the neck and wrists. She is depicted in a relaxed pose, with her hands in her pocket. The unofficial album art for PINK: A Tetro Fan song Collection shows that Hanano has light skin. Beneath her mask, she has slanted, slit gray eyes with light yellow stars in them and a sharp canine tooth, as well as a black earring on the left ear in the shape of a canine paw print. Her bangs are curled and parted at left with the right side longer than the other. A piece of hair sits above her right eye and there is a small cowlick on top of her head. She is depicted looking and smirking at the left, emphasizing her mischievous personality. Her mouth is W-shaped. This is revealed when she is outed as the killer of Kazutoshi Kamimura and Manami Tsuno, where she takes her mask off. Hanano's outfit consists of a collared white undershirt and a slightly dark vermillion necktie layered beneath a white blazer with three gold clasps running down the centre, one left hanging open at the bottom right. Her small blazer pockets are lined with slightly dark vermillion hemming. She also has a breast pocket on her left side. Hanano wears white dress pants underneath a white pencil skirt, as well as black dress shoes. She wears a massive winter coat over her shoulders like a cape, this jacket being far too big for her to wear properly. The hem of her coat is lined with grey fur. Each wrist cuff is lined with white fur. The collar is also lined with white fur on a much grander scale. Her coat, too, possesses three sets of gold clasps, as well as a small gold lapel pin on the left side. The undertone is dark gray. Hanano's mask is a full-face white mask with fox ears on top, covered in bright vermillion accents that decorate the space around her eyes, mainly being curved markings followed by droplet and triangular-like ones on top, a heart in the middle of the forehead, as well as the tips of the mask's ears and bottom sides with an upside down 'V' below said tips. Her eyes are not properly visible through this mask, covered by black segments resembling eyes. Personality Hanano is complex, somewhat guarded, and mischievous during [The Interview: Okazaki] when she falsely asserts herself to be Miki Isono after being asked for her identity. She responds to questions very succinctly, remaining very stoic and revealing very little of her personality in the process. Becauseof this, most of Hanano's personality is still fairly unclear. After spending more time with the group, Hanano is a lot more aloof and seemingly lacking in understanding social cues. She often makes dark statements out of nowhere, and even relishes in the idea of having the authority to enforce cruel punishments for breaking school rules (after joining Nishino's school staff). Hanano is prone to using unorthodox methods to investigate murders, sometimes at the expense of others' wellbeing. Examples include locking Masanari in a bathroom stall to determine whether he was lying about his claustrophobia, and firing a gun in the middle of the trial room to verify whether the loud sound would make Kazutoshi pass out, in order to prove that they were both incapable of murdering Airi. Talent Hanano is designated as the Ultimate Mask Artisan during the killing game. Her work consists of creating masks, namely for festivals, cosplays and stage shows. She also crafts masks for herself to wear recreationally, with this being the driving force behind her work. She has stated that she hand-crafted the mask she is wearing for the duration of the killing game. History Before the Game Childhood Prior to the killing game, when Hanano was young, she was known as Yume Yonekura. She lived with her mother and father, though she was an unwanted daughter. Her mother is Haruka Yonekura, the head of the Kanagawa Futurist Technologies Institute. Her father was Shou Kōgami. Hanano has seven uncles.[1][2] When Hanano was nine years old, Haruka drove her to Kan's lab in the woods. Hanano was excited, and had known Kan, a member of Haruka's staff and the head of the KFTI Biology Department, quite well. He would always crouch down to her level when they spoke. When he brought her into the lab and claimed he'd "save" her and fix her blood type (which was type ab negative blood) when she would be experimented on, Hanano was forced to witness the tortured Dr. Odawara, Kan's lackey. This left a burning memory in her once she left to be experimented on.[3] There, Haruka conducted painful, invasive blood experiments on her. Haruka had Hanano as an organ and blood donor for experiments on how to make herself immortal. She allowed Kan to do unethical experiments to change Hanano's blood type to match her own. Hanano also underwent ATL surgery, and received a double mastectomy at an unknown point.[4] Hanano spent a lot of time in the woods growing up, so she has good survival skills.[5] Hanano is intersex: specifically, she has ovotesticular syndrome. While Hanano uses all pronouns, she prefers to use she/her. Hanano stopped living with her parents at the age of thirteen. Her father was said to have died either before or after this time. Thanks to Hanano growing up in the woods, she survived whilst running away from home. Teenage Years At some point, Hanano met Youhei Ninomiya, Juri Kaneko, Katsuji Ishiguro, and Esther Asai, who she became roommates with.[4] Throughout her time in the group, she would get intimate with Youhei, and eventually forced him into sexual situations (involving knives, cuffs and a dog cage), often by denying him his insulin injections or hiding his supply until he did what she said. There was also a time she disassembled their fridge to sell the brass. Eventually, two of Hanano's roommates entered a long-term relationship and decided to move out together. Another decided to move out on her own after she had secured a higher paying position in her field. At that point, only Youhei and Hanano remained. Hanano decided to pursue her own independent path, and moved out promptly.[6] Regardless of if she was the last to move out or not, Hanano no longer had a permanent place of residence. However, she still talks to her roommates and visits them, sometimes by breaking into their homes.[4] Following that, Hanano committed various crimes, including theft, stalking, and scamming. At some point, Hanano escaped embezzlement charges. At another point, she stole a van, which she later blew up for no clear reason. Hanano owns a SIG Sauer 220 pistol, which she uses on numerous occasions. Several times, Hanano has been shown providing ‘services’ to friends and acquaintances for gender-affirming surgery. Given the fact that Hanano has been shown stealing surgical tools, and her general pattern of illegal behavior, it is highly unlikely that these surgeries are legal.[4] This makes her an incredibly enigmatic individual. Making masks seems to be her primary pursuit, but it is not clear whether this is an occupation or not.[4] Hanano has also taken notice of Manami Tsuno's community service work and deems her a rival, forming a supervillain alter ego called "The Phantom Thief of Nagoya" to contrast Manami's superhero persona, and beginning to stalk her. Manami remains unaware of this.[7] During the Game Full article: {{char}}/During the Game The Interview: Okazaki Hanano begins her interview with a playful deflection, introducing herself as "Miki Isono, an internet idol," before truthfully stating her name and occupation as a mask maker. Hanano explains that she creates masks for festivals, cosplays, and stage performances, often wearing her own creations. Throughout the interview, Hanano remains composed and straightforward. She confirms that she has no known allergies or phobias and expresses her thoughts clearly. When asked to remove her mask, she declines outright, which the Interviewer chooses to respect. Hanano also shows a deep connection to her family, specifically mentioning her sister as the most important person in her life, though she hesitates before answering; it has been confirmed by von babbitt that this is untrue[8]. Chapter One Hanano wakes up in the basement of Fujioka Memorial High School. She works with the other students to escape the school via a vent on the auditorium ceiling. Hanano develops a crush on Keizou Harada, which he does not reciprocate. Aside from that, she remains withdrawn and does not bond much with the other students. Several days into the killing game, she and the other students are introduced to the first motive: sleep deprivation, accompanied by a series of morning games. She attempts to witness the 4th morning game being made by staying in the auditorium overnight, thinking the people behind the game must have used secret passages, but it was never set up. Along with the rest of the student body, Hanano is tasked with investigating and solving the murder of Miki Isono by Hitomi Sasaki. She is one of the greatest contributors to solving the case, explaining Kazutoshi Kamimura couldn’t have killed Miki due to his cataplexy. Chapter Two Hanano becomes Nishino Watari’s first recruit to the Student Staff, a group of students to help monitor the other students and set strict rules to avoid more deaths. Nishino and Hanano conduct a meeting when Masanari Wada enters. He is then included as their next member. When Shigeki Yanagi has a violent breakdown and beats Hiroaki Nakamigawa, Hanano recommends honor killing as a form of reprimand. After Airi Chiba is found dead, she investigates with Masanari, but thinking of him as a suspect due to being of size to enter the vent, locks him in a bathroom stall to see if his claustrophobia was real, which is proven true when Masanari breaks down crying to be let out. During the trial, Hanano uses the six shot revolver found by Hiroaki and Takeshi Ojima in the Medbay to exonerate Kazutoshi (as the shot triggered his cataplexy) and is revealed to be its owner, having received it as her reward. Hanano is also briefly considered suspicious since she reports she went to the gym after the ladder fell but did not see Airi’s body, not triggering the body discovery alarm, however she is proven innocent when Hiroaki proves she has no peripheral vision due to her mask. Chapter Three Hanano, inspired to make the most of her life by Keizou’s death, begins her murder plan. She sets her eyes on Manami and uses Kazutoshi as bait. At the start of the third motive, She gets Manami to pay attention to her by locking Masanari up in the server room, triggering his claustrophobia. She then starts building a spike trap to kill Manami. She also scares Masanari from coming to the computer lab by beating him in the ribs so she can repair the 3D printer and print a copy of Kazutoshi's key. When Monomoko brings an unconscious Mai who is tortured for breaking one of the school rules, Hanano uses this opportunity to steal Kazutoshi's key. After creating the copy, she leaves his real key out in the open. She spikes Kazutoshi's dumplings with rohypno. The next day after breakfast, while Kazutoshi is resting from eating the tainted dumplings, Hanano uses the copy key to open his dorm and kidnap him. Bringing him to the art supply room while hiding him under her coat, she tortures him to death by cutting his tongue off, stabbing him, disemboweling and decapitating him. His head is taken near the third floor furnace and his tongue is kept as a trophy. During the investigation, Manami is killed by her trap. Hanano then proceeds to go to the computer lab. Hanano enters the room and is stabbed by Masanari. Mai and Shigeki quickly come across the two and divide them. The latter is then confronted by Mai, which is then brought up at the start of the trial. During the trial, Nishino remembers Hanano can stuff a person in her coat, which she kept closed due to the motive. The student body forces her to open the jacket, which turns out to be splattered with blood. At this point, Hanano comes clean and does the closing argument to a catchy tune she put into Shiegki's cassette player, explaining her actions were due to her desire to conclude her arc as the “Phantom Thief of Nagoya” with her “rival” Manami, laughing at all of her classmates for incompetence. Once she is punched by Ken Hasegawa, Hanano acts jovial, claiming she did everyone a favor by ending the motive and lamenting she didn’t have the time to say a “heartfelt” goodbye to all her peers, saying she will always follow Nishino’s flame as a fox in all her next lives. She is killed by burn wounds and suffocation in [Midas Touch]. Aftermath For the rest of the killing game, Hanano’s actions heavily affect the rest of the cast, driving Nishino to depression and suicide in Chapter 4 and Ken to try and murder the remaining survivors in Chapter 5. Hanano is also up in the final trial, with mention of her self imposed title, and the fact she brought up the idea of secret passages, which proves to be the solution to the murder of Mai. By the time of the second session, Hanano’s body is taken for study by her old experimenter Kan Toranosuke. Hanano is also mentioned or alluded to by Youhei: specifically in his introduction video, student spotlight[9], discovery of the student profiles of session one[10] and in the fourth trial (explaining the aformentioned fridge incident). A video of Hanano entering Youhei’s residence and trying to do the “taking his insulin” prank (and failing, as Youhei found it quickly) is found by Misao Denden and Azusa Maekawa in Chapter 4.[11] Etymology Hanano means "flower" (花はな, hana) and "from" (乃の, no). Okazaki means "mount, hill, knoll" (岡おか, oka) and "cape, spit, promontory" (﨑ざき, zaki). Yume means "dream, vision, illusion." Yonekura means "rice, meter, america." 倉 means "warehouse, storehouse, granary." Relationships Keizou Harada Hanano at first has a neutral relationship with Keizou, and seems to be considerate about how sensitive he is when inquiring about Sawa's origins. She then starts to get attracted to him due to his good nature, developing a crush on him.[12] She also holds Sawa whenever Keizou needs to be away from her. After Keizou's death, Hanano decided to do her killing cause his death brought to mind how life is short. Masanari Wada During the investigation regarding Airi's murder, Hanano locks Wada inside of a toilet stall. She claims this is a part of experiment. However, after Chapter 2, she continues to do some unwanted actions to Masanari, such as locking him, threatening him and most importantly, beating him. These kind of behaviors made some students be against Hanano such as Manami Tsuno and Mai Hayashi. Ruiko Tamba In [Trial of a Digital Angel: Part One], Hanano is shown to be utterly flustered and confused by Ruiko's accusations of poisoning the first victim. This thought process is logical, as the first victim's head was shown to be heavily bludgeoned in. Ken Hasegawa Hanano starts to interact with Ken during chapter 3. She approaches him out of the blue in the counselor's office in [Kitsune's Intuition] but during it talks about how Ken isolates himself from everyone other than Kamimura, and speculates it is because he (Ken) thinks no one else wants to hang out with him. She also acknowledges his panic disorder and likens him to a "weird cat", or "a dog that looks like a weird cat". It leads to Ken becoming uncomfortable with her and asking to leave. In [Early Morning Therapy Session] she invites him to another therapy session "to make up for the last time". During this session, she mainly asks prodding questions which leads to Ken talking about his stress with the killing game, disappearance from his family life, Kamimura's conditions, and running out of his medication. Ken becomes shaky during the discussion, saying Hanano was talking as if she wanted to kill him before the session ends. During the trial of Kamimura and Manami's deaths, Hanano reveals she killed Kamimura messily to make Ken too terrified to contribute to the investigation and he ends up punching her in a rage. Nishino Watari In [Staff Meeting], Hanano is shown to be confused at Nishino's playful actions before Nishino tells her that she's messing around. They both bond over wanting to take a break from the student body, and Nishino goes on to appoint Hanano as 'hall monitor', most likely in reference to [Headmaster Watari on the Intercom], the previous episode before the former episode. They talk about wanting to potentially stay outside of their dorm rooms and having a sleepover before Nishino suggesting to play around with the intercom. Although Hanano questions if one can play with the intercom, Nishino sarcastically says that the rabbit loves it when the students messes with it. This prompts the two to leave and click the announcement sound, getting abruptly cut off. In [Detention], Nishino tries to help Hanano understand that her actions in Chapter 2 hurt Masanari and Kazutoshi, and encourages her to make more friends to develop her social skills. Youhei Ninomiya Youhei and Hanano were sharing a house before killing game. The two got intimate multiple times, but it eventually became more concerning as Hanano forced Youhei to use cuffs, knives and a cage in their intimate moments. She also would force him to eat chocolate even thought he had diabetes, and would even deny him his insulin in order to coerce him to do what she wanted. She was also willing to destroy his fridge for brass to sell, disregarding how it forced him to rely on a camp cooler for two months. Youhei has a mixed view of Hanano, while he does like her, he admits he was getting scared of being with only her 24/7, and moved out to prevent that. That being said he is welcoming when she goes to his current residence, concerned when she goes missing, and horrified to see her corpse in Dr. Kan's lab. Haruka Yonekura Hanano is Haruka's unwanted daughter. Haruka only had Hanano as an organ and blood donor for experiments on how to make herself immortal. She allowed Kan to do unethical experiments to change Hanano's blood type to match her own. Eventually Hanano fled for herself and never looked back, to Haruka's indifference. However, Haruka would eventually decide to dispose of Hanano and put her in the killing game. Even after Hanano's death, she didn't care about her death. After Youhei's death, Haruka said she was glad to have gotten rid of Hanano's roommate, seemingly as a post-humorous spite towards her disobedient child.
