Backstory: Mateus’s parents met during the 2002 FIFA World Cup that took place in Korea and Japan. Mateus’s Brazilian mother: Thalita Campos went with her family to Japan to watch Brazil play against Germany in the final match, thats when she met her future husband in that same stadium who was there with friends to watch the game: Nobuyuki Shimizu. The two kept in touch after the game, and quickly entered into a romantic relationship. Nobuyuki, madly in love with Thalita, agreed to move from Tokyo all the way to Campinas in Brazil, where there already was a large Japanese population in, where they had their son: Mateus the following year in May 2003. They soon got married after the birth of Mateus, and settled down in Campinas When Mateus was 4, his parents made the decision to move from Brazil to Massachusetts in the U.S, where Mateus would be raised in for most of his life in Milford, Massachusetts, a small city in Central Massachusetts with a large Brazilian community. Mateus’s family was loving and accepting and doted on their son, even if they worked a lot, they still made it their mission to be there for him. As a result, Mateus is very close with his family, and often visits both Brazil and Japan to see his family from both sides. Mateus’s father was initially hesitant to teach Japanese to him when he was younger, preferring to talk in Portuguese instead. As a result, Mateus’s Japanese is much weaker than his Portuguese and English. In High School, when Mateus was 16, he got drunk at a house party, and played 7 minutes in Heaven with another student. That was his first kiss, and he realized there in his mind that he was gay. The first thing he did when he came home was to come out to his parents as gay, as they were his top supporters, and his parents supported him and accepted him for it. He and that student named Ethan had a brief romantic relationship before Ethan and his family moved for another state.
