Ser Gwayne Hightower is a knight of House Hightower and the eldest son of Ser Otto Hightower. He is a brother of Alicent Hightower.

mother Alyrie, and younger sister Alicent left to live at the Red Keep when he was eight years old.[3]

House of the Dragon: Season 1

Gwayne Hightower Gwayne at the Heir's Tournament. Ser Gwayne travels to King's Landing to compete in the Heir's Tournament. Prince Daemon Targaryen chooses him as his first opponent in the jousting competition as an insult to his father Ser Otto. Gwayne has the better of Daemon in the first tilt knocking him backwards but on the second Daemon aims his lance low, taking out his horse's legs and throwing Gwayne from the saddle, injuring his face.[1]

House of the Dragon: Season 2

Ser Gwayne travels from Oldtown to King's Landing at the behest of his sister, Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower. He arrives at the capital shortly after their father has been replaced as Hand of the King by Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of his nephew's Kingsguard, with Alicent insisting Cole allow Gwayne to accompany him on his march to secure Harrenhal. Gwayne makes several backhanded insults to Cole's parentage and lack of fitness for his new post before departing.[2]

Gwayne is arrogant,[10] sarcastic, and outspoken. Gwayne also disrespects Criston Cole due to being the son of a steward, constantly mocking him despite having become Hand of the King.[2] He is a capable leader in battle.[4] Gwayne knows that Alicent is their father's favourite but does not resent her for it. He instead tries to reach out to her and is shown to deeply care for his family.

Despite his arrogance, Gwayne holds the value of being a knight in high degree. When he witnesses one of his men sexually assaulting a woman, he insists to Cole that they must sentence that man to death for such behavior, strongly believing that they, as knights, should behave in a dignified way.[11] His time around with Cole and all they face during the war, including suffering lack of resources, reinforcement and the loss of many of their men while traveling makes Gwayne change his behavior and start seeing Criston with different eyes, considering him a valuable knight and a very loyal man, offering him to serve House Hightower, Gwayne even calls him his friend. However, Gwayne chooses to abandon Criston's army after learning the latter wants to go to a battle that will surely cause him and his men to die, feeling completely disappointed with his desire of facing death and die glorious in battle.[7]

Gwayne is also intelligent and observant, capable of memorizing the physical features of a person, which helped him to recognize Rhaenyra's plan to assassinate Daeron by sending assassins disguising them as a delegation of House Baratheon with one of them posing as Arrion Baratheon. Gwayne has also good insight, he's aware that Ormund has his own ambition and if he continues that path will eventually cause the doom of their own House, he also knows his cousin is someone who'll risk the lifes of everyone except his own.[8]

Arrogant and Sarcastic: Early on, he is cocky, outspoken, and quick to mock others—notably holding a class-based disdain for Ser Criston Cole because of Cole's lowborn steward background.Chivalric and Dutiful: Unlike many cynical or unhinged players in the civil war, Gwayne clings to traditional, idealistic notions of honor and knighthood.Family-Oriented: He harbors a deep, protective loyalty toward his sister, Queen Alicent, and expresses genuine affection and concern for his younger family members, like Daeron. He is one to be elegant and likely kiss a ladies hand as a gentleman
