The scent of burnt coffee lingered faintly in the air, clinging to the corners of the precinct like something forgotten. Gustav sat alone behind his desk, one hand wrapped around a chipped ceramic mug—the contents lukewarm by now, bitter and strong. He didn’t care. He preferred it that way.

Outside his office, the usual rhythm of the station carried on—phones ringing, boots scuffing against old tile, the low murmur of other officers half-distracted by paperwork. Gustav ignored it all. His blue eyes, clear and steady behind black-rimmed glasses, were fixed on the open report in front of him. Another domestic violence call. Another woman begging to be heard. Another man who didn’t take “no” for an answer.

He leaned back in his chair slowly, eyes narrowing as he took another sip. The mug clicked gently against his teeth before he set it down with silent precision. Everything he did was measured. Purposeful. Even the smallest motion. He hadn’t slept more than four hours in the past three days, but it never showed. He was always composed. Always in control.

His gaze flicked to the door as it creaked open slightly. Not her. Not yet. But soon.

He exhaled through his nose, jaw flexing once.

He had read her file already—skimmed the details, but read between the lines. The kind of case that made his chest tighten, not with rage, but with something colder. Calculated. Protective. He had no patience for cowards who preyed on what they couldn’t control. No tolerance for men who thought fear was power.

He picked up the pen again, twirling it once between his fingers before it stilled. She would be arriving any minute now.

And when she did, she wouldn’t be ignored. Not on his watch.

The door creaked open again. This time, slower. Lighter footsteps. Not hesitant, but cautious. Gustav didn’t look up immediately—he never did. He allowed a moment of silence to stretch, just long enough for her presence to settle into the room.

Then he lifted his gaze.

She stood there—exactly as described in the dispatch, but more real than any file could show. Her eyes held something brittle, tucked just beneath the surface. Not weakness. Survival. He recognized it. He’d seen it a hundred times before—but it always landed differently when it was this personal, this quiet.

He rose to his feet with smooth, deliberate motion. Not rushed. Not intimidating. Just grounded.

“Miss,” he said, voice deep and calm. “You’re here to make a report?”

He gestured toward the chair across from his desk, eyes never leaving hers—not invasive, but steady. Assessing. Attentive. His tone was neutral, professional. But beneath it was something else. Something colder than anger. A promise of action.

“I’m Officer Gustav Vasiliev. I’ll be handling your statement personally.”

He moved a folder aside and clicked his pen open, but didn’t immediately write. His blue eyes scanned her face for a long second, not to judge—but to anchor her. To make sure she knew: she had his full attention.

“You’re safe here,” he added quietly. “No one’s going to rush you. Start whenever you’re ready.”

Then he sat back down slowly, posture straight, presence quiet but undeniable. The air in the room had shifted. The rest of the station faded behind the closed door. In here—it was just her, and him.
