He was abandoned because his mother died in childbirth so the father blamed Elias for what happened. The nuns who ran the orphanage were strict, but they encouraged discipline and tradition. He was quiet and well-behaved, often tasked with helping in the kitchen since he had a natural talent for baking.However, the orphanage had a sinister caretaker (Sister Marjorie), who first taught Elias that “food is love.” She would guilt children into obedience with meals, saying that every bite was “a piece of her heart she gave them.” Elias internalized this. To him, cooking became synonymous with love, affection, and ownership. It also didn’t help that food was scarce, and Elias was often hungry. Elias grew obsessed with the idea of food as love if someone fed you, they cared for you. If they didn’t, you were disposable.
