Grok'zyr the Endurer

Grok'zyr the Endurer

Species: Erukan Homeworld: Eruk Family: Mate to Beck'zzy the Manager-Summoner; spawn-parent of Trix'vara the Rumor-Weaver Role: Household provider, logistics worker, reluctant peacekeeper, professional survivor of domestic nonsense Known for: Patience, physical strength, dry humor, endurance, and carrying far too many shopping bags

"I've endured worse."

It is unclear whether this is Grok'zyr's personal philosophy or simply the sentence he has said most often throughout his marriage.

Appearance

Grok'zyr is a large, broad-bodied Erukan with the imposing physical presence his species is known for. His green skin, pointed fin ears, aquatic-looking facial features, and distinctive pinkish tentacles immediately identify him as Erukan, he also has large belly and form that makes him look like he's boarding on obesity, but his appearance is considerably more rugged than Beck'zzy's.

He keeps his short purple hair mostly hidden beneath a practical cap, with a single characteristic Erukan crest protruding from the top. His rectangular glasses sit low across his face, emphasizing his perpetually tired golden eyes.

His clothing is deliberately ordinary: a loose blue work shirt, dark trousers, a heavy belt, and sturdy gloves. He looks less like someone trying to make a fashion statement and more like a man who got dressed specifically because he had somewhere to be.

And then there are the scars and stitches across his chest.

Grok'zyr doesn't talk about them.

Naturally, this means Trix'vara has approximately seventeen theories about them.

His enormous physique can initially make him look intimidating, but his body language tends to undermine that impression. He slouches. He sighs. He leans against things. He looks like someone whose physical strength has repeatedly resulted in other people asking him to move heavy objects.

Personality

Grok'zyr is quiet, stubborn, practical, and extraordinarily difficult to impress.

He's not antisocial. He simply doesn't feel the need to fill every silence.

Where Beck'zzy sees a problem and immediately starts complaining about it, Grok'zyr tends to stare at the problem for several seconds and determine whether it's actually worth dealing with.

This difference has caused approximately 90% of their marital arguments.

His greatest virtue is endurance.

Grok'zyr can tolerate an astonishing amount of nonsense without losing his temper.

He can listen to Beck'zzy explain the same complaint for forty minutes.

He can accompany Trix'vara through six shopping districts.

He can stand in a checkout line while a cashier explains a policy that he already understands.

He can listen to both heads of his daughter argue with each other.

And afterward he'll simply say:

"Done?"

He's also considerably more perceptive than people assume. His quietness isn't ignorance. He's usually noticed what's happening long before anyone else.

He just doesn't necessarily feel compelled to announce it.

Despite his patience, Grok'zyr visually seems almost perpetually irritated, particularly whenever Beck'zzy is around. His expression often carries the look of a man who has just heard the beginning of an argument he already knows he's going to have to endure. The irritation is not always active anger; sometimes it's simply the accumulated weariness of living with Beck'zzy.

With Trix'vara, his patience is considerably thinner. He loves his spawn, but he also considers her an ungrateful little spawn more often than not. Her gossiping, shopping obsession, constant demands, and two-headed arguments can push even Grok'zyr's considerable endurance to its limits.

Sometimes he gets into arguments with Beck'zzy.

Sometimes he argues with Trix'vara.

And sometimes he simply stares at them both, sighs, and endures.

Grok'zyr & Beck'zzy

This is probably the most complicated relationship in his life.

They do not have a happy marriage.

There is very little romance left between them, and both are painfully aware of it.

Yet their relationship isn't simple hatred either.

They know each other too well.

Beck'zzy knows exactly which buttons to push.

Grok'zyr knows exactly when she's bluffing.

She can tell when he's genuinely angry.

He can tell when she's complaining because she's actually upset versus when she's complaining simply because complaining has become part of her personality.

Their arguments have become almost ritualistic.

Beck'zzy:

"You never listen to me!"

Grok'zyr:

"I remember everything you say."

Beck'zzy:

"That's not the same thing!"

And annoyingly, that's probably true.

There is still a strange loyalty between them.

They may spend an entire evening arguing with each other.

But if somebody else insults Beck'zzy?

Grok'zyr suddenly becomes very interested.

Likewise, if someone mocks Grok'zyr for being "just Beck'zzy's husband," she will immediately correct them.

She gets to complain about him.

They don't.

How They Met

I think their relationship works best if they weren't always miserable together.

They met when they were younger, when Beck'zzy's relentless determination was still charming and Grok'zyr's quiet reliability was still something she found reassuring.

Beck'zzy encountered Grok'zyr while dealing with some mundane commercial problem.

She complained.

He actually listened.

Then he fixed it.

That was probably the beginning.

For Beck'zzy, he was one of the first people who didn't immediately dismiss her.

For Grok'zyr, she was one of the first people who genuinely appreciated his reliability.

They fell in love.

They built a life.

And eventually, unfortunately, life happened.

Years of stress, incompatible personalities, accumulated resentment, and simply growing into different people turned what had once been affection into something much more complicated.

Their tragedy isn't that they never loved each other.

It's that they did.

And How Did Trix'vara Happen?

This is actually where the two-headed aspect gives you a fun piece of worldbuilding.

Maybe among Erukans, two-headed offspring are rare and somewhat unpredictable.

When Trix'vara was born, everyone assumed:

"Well, if nothing else, this child will unite the family."

The universe immediately laughed.

Instead she inherited:

  • Beck'zzy's social aggression.
  • Grok'zyr's stubbornness.
  • Twice the amount of talking.

The result was Trix'vara.

Grok'zyr & Trix'vara

This is where Grok'zyr becomes especially interesting.

He absolutely adores his spawn.

He would never phrase it that way.

If somebody asked:

"Do you love Trix'vara?"

He'd probably answer:

"She's my daughter."

As though that wasn't an answer.

Trix'vara is simultaneously the biggest source of joy and exhaustion in his life.

She inherited Beck'zzy's social curiosity and his own observational nature, producing a daughter who is essentially a two-headed intelligence-gathering operation.

And because Trix'vara has two heads, Grok'zyr has effectively had to parent two opinions attached to one child.

Their conversations are ridiculous.

Trix'vara:

"Father, Mother is seeing someone."

Grok'zyr:

"Your mother is married."

Trix'vara:

"Exactly."

Other head:

"We're talking about the cashier."

Grok'zyr:

"I know."

Both:

"You knew?!"

Grok'zyr goes back to his newspaper.

He's also her safe place.

Trix'vara can tell when her parents are fighting.

She knows when the atmosphere at home becomes uncomfortable.

When that happens, she often gravitates toward Grok'zyr.

He doesn't demand that she choose a side.

He doesn't explain away Beck'zzy's behavior.

He doesn't ask her to understand their marriage.

He simply gives her somewhere quiet to exist.

That may be one reason Trix'vara is so attached to him.
