Grimsley

"Man oh man... What is going on today? Challengers coming one right after another. Well, no matter. I am Grimsley of the Elite Four, and I will fulfill my duty to be your opponent." "I never thought you would use that move... Not a bad choice at all." "Good, good... But I will never retreat from any battle." "Even in this situation, there must be a way to triumph!" "If somebody wins a battle, then, without doubt, someone else has lost the battle. That's the way of battle. A real warrior doesn't dash off in pursuit of the next victory, nor throw a fit when experiencing a loss. A real warrior ponders the next battle." "Whether or not you get to fight at full strength, whether or not luck smiles on you--none of that matters. Only results matter. And a loss is a loss. See, victory shines like a bright light. And right now, you and your Pokémon are shining brilliantly." "Now, I'm nothing more than the guy who lost... Nothing more, nothing less. Sigh... You should take that strength and test it against the rest of the Elite Four." "Astonishing! You have defeated every member of the Pokémon League's Elite Four. But it isn't over yet. There is one more opponent against whom you must prove your strength. The pinnacle of the Pokémon League, the Champion, Alder... Or, perhaps, that man called N has defeated him and taken his title. I don't know which one you will face, but check the statue in the central plaza, and continue to the final room." "Life is a serious battle, and you have to use the tools you're given. It's more important to master the cards you're holding than to complain about the ones your opponents were dealt. Let us begin. And may the best Trainer win! Contests like this are proof that you are really living..." "You use the move here... It's good. It's fascinating." "Well... I've never withdrawn from any battles." "Even in this situation, there must be a way...to win." "If somebody wins, the person who fought against that person will lose. That's battle. A good contender just seeks the next victory without bragging after winning, and without getting upset after losing." "There are bad ways to win-- and good ways to lose. What's interesting and troubling is that it's not always clear which is which. A flipped coin doesn't always land heads or tails. Sometimes it may never land at all..." "Excellent! The nice thing about Pokémon battles is they teach the loser something, as well. That said... You should take that strength and test it against the rest of the Elite Four!" "Astonishing! You have defeated every member of the Pokémon League's Elite Four. But it isn't over yet. There is one more opponent against whom you must prove your strength. Check the statue in the central plaza, and continue to the final room." "What will be determined here is which of us can absorb the opponent's light and shine... But who will decide that? It shall be I, Grimsley of the Elite Four, and I will fulfill my duty to be your opponent." "Now why would you use that move? If I can figure that out, I may be able to win!" "Even in a tough situation like this, there must be a way to triumph!" "Where there's a winner, there's also a loser. It's pathetic to make a big deal out of losing if you weren't prepared. If you're a true Pokémon battler, you'll reflect upon your loss and think about how to win next time!" "Whether or not you get to fight at full strength, whether or not luck smiles on you--none of that matters. Only results matter. And a loss is a loss. See, victory shines like a bright light. And right now, you and your Pokémon are shining brilliantly." "Now, I'm nothing more than the one who lost his light... But this loss will make me shine even brighter next time... If I think that way, it's not too bad. Sigh... You should take that strength and test it against the rest of the Elite Four." "Astonishing! You have defeated every member of the Pokémon League's Elite Four. But it isn't over yet. There is one more opponent against whom you must prove your strength. Check the statue in the central plaza, and continue to the final room." "Life is a serious battle, and you have to use the tools you're given. It's more important to master the cards you're holding than to complain about the ones your opponents were dealt. Let us begin. And may the best Trainer win! Contests like this are proof that you are really living..." "I never thought you would use that move... Not a bad choice at all." "Those who give up on themselves can never claim victory!" "There's got to be a way to win... Even in the most extreme of conditions!" "Which Pokémon should I raise? Which moves should I teach my Pokémon? What items should I give my Pokémon? You need to think everything through very thoroughly if you want to win! In that sense, you're a very impressive battler!" "There are bad ways to win-- and good ways to lose. What's interesting and troubling is that it's not always clear which is which. A flipped coin doesn't always land heads or tails. Sometimes it may never land at all..." "There's nothing left for the loser. I guess that's not true... Everything has a meaning. I just have to use the disappointment as a motivation to get strong. That said... You should take that strength and test it against the rest of the Elite Four!" "Astonishing! You have defeated every member of the Pokémon League's Elite Four. But it isn't over yet. There is one more opponent against whom you must prove your strength. Check the statue in the central plaza, and continue to the final room." "Man oh man... What is going on today? Someone actually bothered coming to this kind of sad place?" "Well, no matter. I'll take you on. Keep you company. Tell me. Uncle Grimsley is going to flip a coin. Will it be heads or tails?" Heads/Tails: "...Astonishing. You just took a stab, like some kind of prophet. Right now, you and your Pokémon are shining brilliantly." Neither: "...Astonishing. I had indeed been planning to have Skarmory snatch it out of the air as it spun in the sky." "A loss is a loss. I'll give you Sharpedo's info for your Ride Pager then. Ride it to victory." "Maybe you don't need to hear this from me, but I'm going to tell you anyway...'' "And here's a bit more unwanted advice...'' "Call me Grimsley. I guess you could say I'm a bit of a risk taker. I live for battles! That's my destiny." "Lots of things make me happy, but I don't let my emotions show." "Life is a serious battle. And you've got to do your best with the hand you're dealt." "When somebody wins, somebody also has to lose. That's just the way of battle." "Learning how to utilize the cards you're dealt is an important skill to master." "Where there's a winner, there's a loser. True battlers reflect on their losses and think about how to win next time." "I'll show you what it means to be a real Trainer." "Until we meet again." "Time to celebrate." "This could be our new trump card." "I feel like a winner today." "The odds are in our favor now." "Looks like I'm holding all the cards now." "Guess who's holding all the aces!" "Trusting yourself is part of becoming a strong Trainer." "Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is the key to winning." "Do you have a moment?" "Hey, you." "Yes?" "Eheh." "Ehahahahaha!" "Hmm-hm-hm-hmm!" "Hmph!" "Psh, sure." "Good job!" "Astonishing!" "I believe congratulations are in order." "Give it your all!" "Huh?" "What are you doing?!" "No dice." "Gah..." "I did not account for this..." "I can't believe it..." "It's all about the luck of the moment. Hah..." "What?" "What in the world?!" "No! Impossible!" "Ugh." "Nothing to be done..." "Time to think." "Only results matter!" "Thanks!" "I must apologize." "You can leave it to me." "I would never." "Guh!" "Perhaps you can help me." "I understand now." "Fascinating!" "Umm..." "Until we meet again." "Victory shines like a bright light." "I will never retreat." "Listen." "Hey!" "Yeah." "Aheh." "Ahahahahaha." "Hmhmhmhmhmhm!" "Hm." "Aha, huh." "Not bad." "I'm impressed!" "Congratulations." "Give it your best shot!" "Huggh..." "Unbelievable!" "No." "Uugh..." "Uhhh, hh..." "What a nightmare..." "Mm, hoooh." "Huh?" "What?!" "What!" "Naagh." "Nuuh." "Hmmm." "Fine." "Well, thank you." "My apologies." "Of course." "I don't think so." "O-ow!" "I'd appreciate the favor." "Interesting..." "Well, well." "Ahaha..." "See you around, then!" "I'll show you what a true competitor looks like." "All cards on the table!" "Good morning. Something tells me luck's on our side today." "I'm not really a morning person... I tend to stay up late battling, most nights."* "Eating a proper meal should be your first step to prepare for battle." "I study new moves during the day—and then battle with them at night. That's my style."* "Dark nights are for daredevils like me. Are you a daredevil, too?" "Some people say nights are calm and relaxing, but for a thrill-seeker like me, they get the blood pumping."* "When I got up this morning, the thought of all the battles waiting for me woke me up like a hot cup of coffee." "I've never been much of a morning person... Unless I've got a Pokémon battle waiting for me, of course." "If you skip a meal, you might not be at full strength when you need it. It sounds like common sense, but it's easy to forget." "I was thinking of heading to the beach. For some reason, I've always been drawn to the sound of the waves." "It's time to get out on the town. When you live and breathe competition like I do, the darkness of night is no obstacle to battling." "Imagine—a one-night-only, winner-takes-all tournament. I'd jump at the chance to compete in something like that." "Only results matter." "Fine." "May the best Trainer win." "Winner takes all!" "Now!" "Ready?" "Go!" "This is it!" "There!" "Now!" "I'll handle this!" "My turn." "I never miss a chance." "Time to up the ante!" "It's showtime!" "All cards on the table!" "All in!" "Destiny!" "Win!" "I'll show you what a true competitor looks like." "It's showtime!" "Ante up." "That was bad luck." "Better luck next time." "That's some cool-headed thinking." "Eheh." "Triumph. Only results matter." "Aheh." "Looks like the odds were in our favor." "Oh, don't play coy." "Remind me...who was it that completely overpowered our last opponents after saying that very same thing?" "Surrounding yourself in a blanket of smoke, keeping your cards close to your chest... Typical." "Heh heh..." "I get the feeling those same tactics won't work on our newest contenders, though." "These Trainers are earnest–I can see it in their eyes. They're not the type to fall for cheap tricks or bluffs." "I think I'll pass for now." "There's only room for one wild card in any good deck." "Guess this is the end of the road for our little team." "It's fine. All par for the course... Game aficionados like myself are used to diving into competitions on a whim." "Besides, I think I know what your true aim is here, anyway." "You think the kid's the best way to get to the bottom of it, huh?" "I'll admit, () does have a way of drawing out the passion in others. A born leader." "I mean, he'd/she'd have to be if he/she managed to impassion a jaded guy like me." "That's reason enough to make him/her a target... So you decided to follow along to protect him/her and his/her team. That's what this is all about?" "Well, why don't you just do what you want and let me do the same." "Who knows? The next time we meet, we might be fighting on opposing teams." "Hmph. I still can't tell what's going on in that head of yours." "I think it's time I took my leave..." "What is it?" "You've got me wrong. All-or-nothing games aren't my style." "Every card in the deck has the potential to bring home a win. All I do is show them the way." "I've never withdrawn from any battles." "But, well, what's a player to do when they don't have a single card to play?" "I think it's about time I cut my losses." "See what's next out there for ol' Grimsley..." "The winner takes everything, and there's nothing left for the loser." "That's been the philosophy guiding all my battles up till now, and that's not about to change." "In the heat of the moment, I could choose to make a move, believing it would win us the battle..." "but the cost of that choice would be that your dear partner Pokémon get hurt." "Are you sure you can stand here in front of your partners and tell me that's all right?" "What?" "... ... ..." "All right. Then...I'll take you on." "Ol' Grimsley is going to flip a coin. Heads, you two win and I join your team." "Tails, you lose and we forget about all this talk." "Heh. No need to worry." "Those who give up on themselves can never claim victory." "But for those who don't give up, anything is possible..." "Well, hello again, () and his/her teammates." "Well, after some twists and turns, yes." "Looks like I was right when I said we'd be fighting on opposing teams the next time we meet, huh?" "Why, yes. Allow me to introduce you to..." "I realized a more aggressive fighting style would help me bring out the best plays for this team." "Oops! Sorry about that! He's a bit of a wild one." "But his fearlessness more than makes up for it. He doesn't mind taking a few licks if it means winning the battle." ''... Victory is calling me." "I'm putting everything on the line in this battle." "Let the game begin!" "Well, isn't that something?" "I played my hand for all it was worth, and yet...here we are." "Victory's yours'' "This marks the second time I've seen that look on your face. It's not bad at all." "I just wish it didn't also mark the second time I've lost to you." "Heh. Maybe, but a loss is a loss." "Is that you, ?" Uh... Yes...: "I thought so. You must be lost." No...: "It's not very nice to lie, you know. Either way, you don't fool me." "It isn't difficult, by the way... I simply memorized the sound of your footsteps—nothing more." "However...that last round shouldn't count, Liepard." Liepard?!: "Didn't know she was there, did you? Though I wouldn't really expect you to." Round of what?: "Oh, just a game my Pokémon and I like to play. We find the competition entertaining." "I don't know if you know this, but a Liepard can conceal its presence, allowing it to stealthily sneak up on its targets." "So our little game consists of me closing my eyes and attempting to guess Liepard's location." "Looks like Liepard is pretty keen on our little game as well." "Though originally, it was merely an exercise to bolster my competitive instincts." Like training?: "You might say that, yes. We've been doing it for a long, long time." Your game isn't for fun?: "As someone who lives and breathes competition like I do, you know games are never just fun. We take them seriously. We play to win." "My past isn't all sunshine and daisies, kid. Back when I lived at the family estate, I had to learn how to read people..." "Adults can be tricky, see. I was in a situation where I had to suss out who was being straight with me and who was trying to use me." "Eventually, I discovered how to do that. It's all about goals and intentions—figuring out what people want the most." "That's what drives people to do what they do. Figure that out, and you'll see through any lie or bluff... That, kid, is how you win a game." "Judging by the question you asked me a moment ago, I'm pretty sure I could guess what sort of victory you crave the most." That's incredible!: "You're an honest kid. I can't fault you for that." "And you know what? Sometimes it's the most honest, purehearted of us that end up becoming the strongest of all." Come on... You couldn't possibly know that.: "Don't believe me? Well then, I guess you'll just have to wait until we battle to find out if I'm telling the truth or not." "Don't expect me to reveal my hand until we do, though." "Heh heh... I think Liepard wants to test you now." "Well, , close your eyes... Tell me, where do you think Liepard is right now?" Behind me!/Above me!: "Heh heh... The answer is..." "Uh oh... Sounds like Liepard's a little cranky." "She must be sulking. She probably thought she could sneak up on you, but instead you found her right away." "You're a tenacious one, aren't you, kid? That might come in handy for you soon." "Finding your way through to the other side of this mountain's a bit of a gamble. There's a fork in the path up ahead that goes left or right." "Heh heh... You've got the makings of a real competitor in you, kid. And, well...no risk, no gain, right?" "Indulge Uncle Grimsley in a game of chance... Tell me. Which path will you choose?" Hey, Grimsley!: "Hey, . I had a sneaking suspicion you'd call out to me. Looks like my coin toss was right on the money." Maybe I should leave them alone...: ". I thought you'd call out to me. Guess that coin I flipped landed on the wrong side..." "Why the surprised look on your face? Is it really so unusual that I was aware of your presence?" "No, maybe you're surprised about something else..." "Are you wondering what I'm doing out here in the middle of the day, when battles at night are more my style?" "I see. Well, you certainly have a valid reason to be surprised. Can you guess why I'm here, then?" You're training!/You're playing!: "Heh, I suppose it does look that way. You could call it both playing and training. I was riding the waves with Sharpedo." "Why do you still look so surprised?" "Did you know there's a part of the world where people surf on Sharpedo? It's treated like a sport there." "Sharpedo is known as the bully of the sea, and it swims at incredibly high speeds. Sounds fun to surf on, doesn't it?" "There's no greater thrill than the rough and wild swimming of a Sharpedo. Plus, surfing on one is an excellent way to hone your reflexes." "Sharpedo and I work as one, reading the ocean's current as we ride the waves together." "Being so synchronized also helps us work toward being the best in a variety of battle situations." "When you train with your partner, you can feel the power that only they possess." You're right!: "Heh. I had a feeling you'd understand." You can?: "Heh. You should have more confidence in yourself. You're stronger than you realize." "Plus, sync strength has a profound effect on battles here." "You could say that all the time you spend together is just practice for your next victory." "Say, how would you like to try surfing sometime?" I'm down to try it!: "Heh. Looks like we're both cut from the same thrill-seeking cloth." I'm good for now.: "Oh well. If you ever change your mind, let me know. Maybe we can compete against each other once your surfing skills are up to snuff." "I'm looking forward to the day we match wits again." "Well, well. If it isn't ." You had a battle?: "I most certainly did. It wasn't a Pokémon battle, though." Bisharp looks happy.: "That's because she hit the jackpot." "Here's what happened. While we were walking, Bisharp came across a stone that's perfect for sharpening her blades..." "but at the same time, Steven spotted the stone and decided that he wanted it as well." "I guess to him, it was some sort of rare stone." "So I proposed settling the matter like gentlemen... With a bet." "It was a very simple bet." "Who would be the next to walk by us on the road, a boy or a girl?" "Steven said that it would be a boy, and Bisharp thought it would be a girl. And just like that, we had a bet." "Mere moments later, a male Trainer walked by." So that was it?: "No. You see, there was one small problem." It wasn't a girl?: "That's right. It was a male Trainer." "I was just about to shake Steven's hand and congratulate him on winning the bet when Bisharp stopped me." "That took me by surprise, because Bisharp isn't the type of Pokémon to break her promises." "I knew there had to be some reason why she stopped me." "Just then, I noticed something. The Trainer had a partner Pokémon—a Pawniard. And not only that..." "but the Pawniard was actually walking in front of the Trainer." "Sure enough, I asked the Trainer whether his Pawniard was male or female, and it turned out she was a girl!" How funny!: "Yeah. I have to admit, I was amused as well." Bisharp knew?: "It appears that way!" "You really can't tell just from a Pawniard's appearance alone, but Bisharp noticed right away." "I know my Bisharp very well, but every now and then, she surprises me." "That's why I adore her so much." You know her well?: "Bisharp and I go way back." "That's why I almost always know what she's thinking." You're best buddies, eh?: "That's right. We've been partners for ages." "When we battle, Bisharp often goes into motion before I've even given her a command, because she knows what I'm going to say." "I guess after spending so much time around a risk taker like me, she's gotten pretty good at reading people." "I can't say for sure if she really understands my every thought." "But I know I've always got her back—and she's always got mine." "Well, would you look at that? She's itching to put her freshly sharpened blades to the test." "What do you say, ? Care for a battle?" "When it comes to surprises, you definitely are full of them." "A battle between wild cards like you and me is certain to be a thrill." "A beautiful loss is still a loss, and an ugly win is still a win!" "I've got to keep my fangs sharp so I can have the best battles possible." "I'm fond of a great many Pokémon..." "but it's Liepard's strength that I'd risk it all on." "The way she pounces with devastating blows faster than her opponents can predict them..." "Sure, there's always some manner of luck involved—but that just adds to the flavor." "When you find a Pokémon that you adore, go out on a limb for it—take risks." "When you crave victory for your Pokémon, that desire feeds into your Pokémon's strength." "It's not wrong to thirst for battle." "A pure, true desire to win has the power to change one's fate, despite the inevitable losses one must sometimes face." "When the time comes for you to face adversity, I wonder how the cards will fall." "You like Pokémon, don't you?" "I love Pokémon more than anything else in the world, as all Trainers do..." "but let me get one thing off my chest." "Battles can be used to settle a lot of different things." "However, battling others just to profess that your love is better than theirs... That's just deplorable." "After all, having a thirst for victory is not a bad thing in and of itself..." "but if you can afford to have some fun along the way, it should be encouraged." "A bit of adventurousness can be the ace up your sleeve, you know. I can appreciate that in a battle opponent." "Highly competitive Trainers don't tend to flock together." "You see, the strongest Trainers know they'll eventually have to face one another, and that doesn't lend itself to chummy teamwork." That being said, teaming up with you and claiming victory together versus individually... That has its own brilliant shine." "I want to experience more of that shine." "Being a Pokémon Trainer isn't something you can do alone." "You always have your Pokémon fighting there beside you. You can't have a real battle otherwise." "In order to win, you have to be able to trust your Pokémon and your Pokémon has to have faith in you." "Time's up." "So what's it gonna be, Marshal?" "It's tails. You lose again, Marshal." "You said you wanted special training to learn how to read your opponent's expressions in Pokémon battles, right?" "But I think there are better ways for you to get stronger." "I've got a good feeling about today. Luck seems to be in my favor whenever you're around, ." "I'm getting antsy just thinking about all the battles that await us today." "Hey, . I thought I'd run into you about now." "Battles come down to luck in the end. What kind of luck will today bring?" "Every day, without fail, Bisharp will sharpen the blade on her head." "She's always ready for anything—and always capable of peak performance." "Just the perfect partner for a Trainer like me, eh?" "When people aren't winning, they tend to get frustrated and impatient." "At times like that, the trick is to relax and enjoy the battle." "Fortune smiles not on those who obsess over winning or losing. It shines on those who are having the most fun." "I'd expect nothing less from an outfit inspired by Sharpedo's reputation as the bully of the sea." "If somebody wins a battle, then, without doubt, someone else has lost the battle. That's the way of battle. A real warrior doesn't dash off in pursuit of the next victory, nor throw a fit when experiencing a loss. A real warrior ponders the next battle." "Man oh man... I had indeed been planning to have Skarmory snatch it out of the air as it spun in the sky."

Charming and mysterious, Grimsley displays similar behavior to that of an upper class gentleman. However his rather snide smile and scheming posture may indicate that he is somewhat of a schemer among his cohorts.

(Since he was born in a fallen noble family, he has bad gambling habits, and regards life as a gamble. However, he prefers movesets that give him safety and a bigger advantage.)
