The white sand of Hueco Mundo didn't just burn; it felt like a insult.
Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez lay half-rotting in the middle of a desolate wasteland, pinned to the pale, lifeless dirt by sheer, pathetic exhaustion. His body was a jagged map of shattered bones and torn flesh, the gaping strike from Ichigo Kurosaki’s Zanpakutō still burning like liquid iron in his gut. The sky above was dead—a flat, artificial void with that godforsaken moon staring down at him like an eye waiting for him to die.
Die? Fuck that.
He spat a glob of dark, copper-tasting blood into the sand and dug his claws into the quartz dust, his knuckles turning white. His jaw clamped together so hard his teeth groaned under the pressure. The rank of Sexta Espada meant jack shit now. Aizen was gone. The palace was a ruin. His Fracción were dead or scattered. But Grimmjow didn’t give a single shit about any of that useless political garbage. What made his blood boil—what made him want to rip his own throat out just to scream louder—was the sickening, suffocating reality that he had been left behind. Unfinished.
Kurosaki had walked away. That orange-haired bastard had turned his back on him.
"I'll kill him," Grimmjow growled into the empty air, his voice a raspy, shredded sound that tore through his throat. "I'll rip his goddamn heart out and feed it to him... Kurosaki... you motherfucker..."
For days—or maybe weeks, time was a meaningless joke in this barren pit—he lay there, forced to endure the wretched, crawling crawl of his own spiritual energy stitching his shattered internal organs back together. Hollows healed, but healing while your pride was chopped into pieces was a slow, torturous hell. Every tiny twitch of a muscle felt like needles stabbing into his lungs. Whenever the weak-ass spiritual pressure of some low-class Hollow drifted nearby, smelling his blood and hunting for scraps, Grimmjow didn't just hide—he flared his surviving Reiatsu like a rabid animal, baring his fangs and roaring until the desert shook and the parasites scattered in terror.
He was the King. Even bleeding out in the dirt, he was the top of the fucking chain. Which made the human’s appearance not just bizarre, but a goddamn insult to his existence. When he first caught the weak, pathetic trace of a human soul drifting through the ruins, he thought his brain was finally rotting from blood loss. Humans didn't belong in Hueco Mundo. Humans were tiny, soft-skinned snacks that squealed and died the second a Gillian looked in their direction.
Yet there the brat was. Standing a few yards away, hovering near the shadow of a crumbled pillar, staring at him. They weren't armed. They didn't have a Zanpakutō. They didn't even have enough spiritual pressure to light up a dark room. They were just... there. Cautious, sure, but not shaking. Not screaming. Not dropping to their knees in terror like any sane insect should when standing before an Arrancar.
"Get the fuck out of here before I eat you," Grimmjow snarled, his blue eyes burning with raw malice from where he lay in the sand. The human didn't run. Instead, they set down a bundle wrapped in cloth—clean water, wrapped food, rags—and backed away a few paces.
Grimmjow stared at the pile, then at the human, his upper lip curling over his fangs in utter disgust. "What the hell is this shit?! You mocking me, you little worm?! You think I need your charity?!"
He dragged himself forward an inch, intent on crushing the human's skull against the stone, but his body buckled, a surge of agony shooting up his spine and forcing a bloody cough out of his chest. When he looked back up, the human hadn't moved. They just sat on a chunk of fallen debris, watching him with calm, unbothered eyes.
It drove him insane.
Every single interaction Grimmjow had ever known in his entire life was forged in blood and iron. You either proved you were the apex predator by tearing out the other guy's throat, or you submitted like a whipped dog. Power, violence, dominance. That was the law. It was simple. It made sense.
This human didn't fit into the law. They didn't want to fight. They didn't bow down. They didn't flinch when he swore at them or threatened to slice them into bloody ribbon strips. They just kept coming back. Every time Grimmjow woke up from a dark, feverish sleep, the human was there, replacing the dirty rags, leaving water, or just sitting nearby like some irritating stone statue.
It was infuriating. It was nauseating. It felt like being looked down on by a flea. One afternoon, the sheer humiliation of lying in the dirt snapped something inside him. The Reiatsu around him flared up in a violent, jagged crimson-and-blue storm, kicking up a cyclone of white sand.
"Enough of this bullshit!" he roared. Grimmjow jammed his claws into the ground, gritting his fangs until his gums bled. His shoulder muscles bunched, strain tearing open half-healed scars on his back as he forced his battered body off the earth. His legs wobbled violently, bone grating against bone, but he refused to fall. He dragged himself all the way up, towering over the desert floor, his chest heaving, blood dripping down his pale stomach. The world spun in sickening circles, but he held his ground, his hand instinctively snapping to his hip—only to find the empty space where his Zanpakutō usually rested.
His head snapped toward the human, his bright blue eyes wild, predatory, and venomous.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU STARING AT, YOU DAMN BRAT?!" he bellowed, the sound echoing off the hollow ruins. "Look at me! Look at what I am! I'm the Sexta Espada! I've slaughtered thousands of creatures tougher than you could ever dream of being! I ain't some dying stray dog you can pitied and petted! You hear me?!"
He took a heavy, aggressive step forward, his shadow looming over them. "I could crush your neck with two fingers! I could rip your arms off before you even have time to scream! Give me one good reason why I shouldn't paint this sand with your guts right fucking now!"
The human didn't scream. They didn't even blink. They just looked up at his bleeding, roaring form, their expression completely level. Unshakable.
Grimmjow’s fists clenched so hard his claws punctured his own palms. His teeth clicked together in pure, unadulterated frustration. He wanted to kill them—he should kill them—but killing a frail insect that refused to raise a hand back, that didn't show an ounce of fear or combat malice, felt pathetic. It was beneath him. It wasn't a fight; it was just senseless squishing of a bug, and Grimmjow was a King, not a mindless beast.
"Answer me, damn it!" he spat, stepping closer, his chest practically touching their forehead. "Are you deaf?! Are you stupid?! What the hell is wrong with your brain?!"
The human finally spoke, their voice exasperatingly calm, throwing out some mundane, casual remark about how he shouldn't be standing if his stitches were bleeding out again.
Grimmjow’s mind short-circuited. "You... you crazy little shit..." he muttered, his rage turning into sheer disbelief. "You really do have a goddamn screw loose."
He shifted his weight to take another menacing step, but his left knee completely betrayed him. A sharp, sickening snap echoed in his joint, and his leg buckled. The human instinctively reached out a hand to steady him.
"DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH ME!" Grimmjow screamed, his voice carrying enough raw, violent pressure to blow the white sand away from their feet.
He caught himself on one knee, his heavy breathing tearing through the silence of the desert. Blood splattered onto the white quartz beneath his palm. He was shaking—not from fear, but from the unbearable anger of his own temporary weakness. He could feel the human standing right there, just inches away, refusing to back down, refusing to leave him to rot.
Grimmjow glared at the ground, his teeth bared in a terrifying grimace. He wanted to tear the world apart. He wanted to destroy everything in sight. But he needed his strength back. He needed to heal so he could go back to the World of the Living and rip Kurosaki’s head off. And as much as it made him want to vomit, this stupid, fearless human was the only thing keeping his body from collapsing back into the dirt.
"Tch..."
The hiss escaped his throat, laced with pure venom.
"Fine," he growled, refusing to look up at them, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Fuckin' fine. But you touch me without permission and I'll bite your fingers off. You make a big deal out of this, and I'll tear your throat out the second I can walk straight. Got it?!"
The human didn't argue. They just waited. That was how the worst, most dysfunctional alliance in Hueco Mundo began. There was no soft, emotional garbage. Grimmjow didn't magically become a nice guy. He remained a feral, short-tempered, foul-mouthed monster. Whenever the human brought him meat, he snatched it out of their hands, barked that it tasted like dry garbage, and shoved it into his mouth anyway. Whenever they wrapped his wounds, he spent the entire ten minutes snarling, calling them useless, and threatening to snap their wrists if they pulled the rags too tight. If they asked how he was feeling, he’d glare at them like he was calculating the fastest way to break their jaw.
"Shut your mouth before I shut it for you, trash!" was his standard response to almost any question. But as the days bled into each other, the dynamic shifted into something viciously protective. Grimmjow would never admit it—he'd rather drown in boiling acid than say it out loud—but he started keeping track.
If a lower-class Hollow so much as glanced in the human's direction while they were out scavenging, Grimmjow would force himself up, unleash a blinding flash of blue Reiatsu, and pulverize the intruder into microscopic dust before the human even realized what was happening. "Get out of my sight, you ugly bastard!" he'd scream at the pile of ash. "Nobody touches my goddamn collateral!"
And on the days when the human took too long to come back from whatever broken ruin they were searching, Grimmjow wouldn't just sit patiently. He’d pace back and forth like a caged panther, kicking rocks, smashing stone pillars with his bare hands, his jaw clenched tight enough to break.
"Stupid, useless brat," he'd growl to himself, his blue eyes flashing furiously in the moonlight as he stared out over the vast, empty dunes. "Probably got themselves eaten like a dumbass. Good. Saves me the trouble of wringing their neck."
He’d pause, his claws twitching at his sides, his ears straining against the dead silence of the desert. "...They better not be dead. I still owe 'em a beating."
And when the sound of quiet, familiar footsteps finally echoed across the sand, Grimmjow would instantly drop onto a ruined slab of stone, cross his arms over his chest, scowl as hard as he possibly could, and look in the complete opposite direction.
"You're late, trash," he’d bark without turning his head, his voice dripping with pure irritation. "Next time you take this long, I'm eating your arms."
He didn't say thanks. He didn't smile. He just sat there, a violent, battered storm of pride and fangs, guarding the only creature in the entire universe stupid enough not to run away from him.
