The first time Grimmjow looked at you like you belonged to him, it felt like standing in front of a loaded gun and daring it to fire. Not soft, not patient, but absolute. Like he’d scanned a crowded, noisy room full of people easier to deal with, weaker, safer — and still decided you were the only target worth his time. That was the problem with Grimmjow. When he wanted something, he didn’t ask; he staked a claim.
It started loud. A heavy hand gripping your hip to yank you out of the way of a swinging punch. Late-night rides through the empty streets on the back of his bike, your arms locked tight around his leather-clad chest as the engine roared. Silent acts of possession disguised as irritation. Put a coat on. Eat before you pass out. Don’t wander off, or I’ll drag you back by your hair. Never gentle enough to be called tender, just heavy enough to make your ribs ache anyway. Everyone warned you about him—that he was feral, that he only cared about destruction, that he ruined everything he touched. But Grimmjow around you felt different. He listened when you talked back, remembered tiny complaints you’d made days ago, and looked at you like you were the only real thing in a world full of fools. And sometimes—in rare, terrifying flashes when his guard slipped—he looked at you like he couldn’t survive without you. That should’ve scared you more than it did.
The first crack appeared after you told him you loved him. Not during a fight, not when you were bleeding or backed into a corner, but just quietly. You were sitting together on the edge of the bed in his dim apartment, the neon city lights bleeding through the blinds, his heavy arm hooked over your shoulder. "I love you," you murmured against his skin. Grimmjow went completely still. Not shocked, not pleased, just still—like you’d shoved something sharp into his chest and he didn’t know whether to rip it out or press harder. A long, heavy silence stretched between you before he scoffed, his jaw ticking. "Tch. You talk too much." And just like that, the invisible wall went right back up.
After that, loving Grimmjow became a brutal, exhausting game you couldn’t explain to anyone else, because he wasn’t a monster all the time. That would’ve made walking away easy. Instead, he was impossible. Some days he acted like he was addicted to your presence, hovering close and refusing to let you out of his sight, while other days he treated you like a burden he was sick of carrying. He’d kiss you like he wanted to swallow you whole, then disappear for three days without a word. He’d pull you into his lap with possessive claws, daring anyone to look, only to pick a fight with you over nothing five minutes later. Who the hell were you talking to? Stop whining. You’re always making a big deal out of nothing. And every time you pulled back, every time you got tired enough to stop fighting and start drifting away, Grimmjow noticed instantly. That was the worst part. He always noticed the second your voice lost its edge, the moment you stopped leaning into his touch first, the moment your laughter around him turned dead and flat. He’d appear again out of nowhere after days of silence like nothing had happened—kicking your door open or waiting outside your work with his arms crossed over his chest, scowling. Get over here. No apology. Never an apology. Just enough raw heat to drag you right back in.
You began understanding the truth too late: Grimmjow did love you. He just loved like a caged predator, terrified of anything that could weaken him. Every time intimacy got too real, he lashed out. The closer you got, the harder he pushed, like he couldn’t stand the thought of someone knowing how to break him, like vulnerability was a disease. One night after a vicious argument that left you both shaking, you finally snapped. "You act like giving a damn about someone makes you weak!" Grimmjow laughed, a harsh, jagged sound from the back of his throat, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles popped. "Because it does!" "You don’t mean that!" "The hell I don’t!" "You’re just terrified!" That made him go dead silent—a dangerous, suffocating kind of quiet. His bright blue eyes locked onto yours, sharp enough to draw blood, before he grinned. Mean. Defensive. Ugly. "You think you’ve got me figured out?" "I think you start fights so you have an excuse to push me away before I do it to you." For one split second, something fractured across his face—not fury, but pain. Raw, burning pain. You saw it clear as day, and it made your throat tighten. And Grimmjow hated you for seeing it. The next words out of his mouth were calculated to tear you apart. "Maybe if you weren’t so damn desperate all the time, I’d actually want to stick around." Silence. You stared at him, and he stared back. And even then—even after spitting the poison out—he looked furious at himself for saying it. But he never took it back. That was Grimmjow’s curse. He’d rather rip his own heart out than admit he needed yours.
Things rotted after that. Slowly. Viciously. He stopped letting you see anything beneath the armor, every soft moment getting buried under sarcasm, biting remarks, or skin-to-skin friction that left you both empty. If he missed you, he picked a fight instead of saying it. If he felt threatened by how much power you had over him, he acted cold to punish you first. If he needed comfort, he shut down entirely, like he was trying to murder the human part of himself that wanted you close. You started feeling profoundly alone even when he was right beside you—especially when he was right beside you. Because sometimes he’d hold you in the dark with a crushing, bruising grip, like he was terrified you’d vanish into thin air, while refusing to utter a single honest word. Like loving you was a weakness. Like needing you made him less than what he was.
The final confrontation happened in winter. Freezing air. Flickering streetlamps. Snow gathering thick on the hood of his bike while the engine ticked in the cold. You were crying, and Grimmjow looked furious about it. Not sorry. Furious. "You keep expecting shit I don’t know how to give!"
"I’m asking you to be real with me for once!"
"What’s the point?!"
"The point is I love you!"
"That’s your damn fault." The second the words left his mouth, a flicker of pure regret crossed his face—brief, sudden, gone the next second. And that hurt worse than the insult, because he didn’t mean it. Not really. He was just too damn scared not to say it. The hedgehog dilemma. Two violent forces desperate for warmth, tearing each other to pieces the second their defenses dropped. Grimmjow wanted you. Wanted you so badly it hollowed him out. But every step toward surrender felt like a death sentence to him. So he chose the cold instead. Even if it tore him apart. Even if it ruined everything. Even if losing you was the one fight he couldn't win. Because in Grimmjow’s mind, being left behind was intolerable, but being completely known? That was a weakness he’d die before allowing. "You brought this on yourself for loving me," he scoffed, his voice dropping into a harsh, trembling growl as he turned his back to the snow.
