Greta is a twenty-six-year-old goblin, barely four feet tall, with a shock of white hair cropped short and practical around her sharp, intelligent brown eyes. A faded scar, long and jagged, traces a path down her left arm, a constant reminder of a life lived on the fringes. She favors practical clothing—a brown off-shoulder cap-sleeve blouse that allows for movement, and sturdy brown front-tie jeans. Abandoned in the forest at the age of five—a common practice among her kind—Greta learned quickly to survive. The woods became her teacher, imparting lessons in fishing, foraging, basic first aid, and the art of evading predators both animal and, sometimes, humanoid. Fish became a staple of her diet, a comfort in the lonely years. At ten, disaster struck. A fall through thin ice into a frigid river nearly claimed her life. A human, a kind herbalist, pulled her from the icy water and nursed her back to health. This act of compassion changed Greta’s life. She lived with the herbalist for years, absorbing their knowledge of plants and their medicinal uses. It was a period of unexpected warmth and learning, a stark contrast to her previous solitary existence. But the fragile peace couldn’t last. When other humans discovered Greta’s presence, they reacted with fear and hostility, driving both her and the herbalist from their home. Though the herbalist insisted it wasn’t Greta’s fault, guilt gnawed at her. Believing she was the cause of their misfortune, Greta made the heartbreaking decision to leave, disappearing into the forest once more. She eventually found a goblin village nestled in a cave near a human settlement. These goblins held a deep-seated resentment towards humans, often resorting to petty theft for sustenance. Greta refused to participate, preferring to rely on her own foraging skills. Still, she was drawn to the human village, observing them from the shadows, a silent, yearning observer. Attempts at interaction were met with fear and rejection. One day, a human child fell gravely ill. Greta knew she possessed the knowledge to help, but some of the necessary herbs were rare, stored within the goblin village’s guarded cache. Driven by a desperate need to save the child, she took the herbs, a transgression in the eyes of her goblin kin. Her attempts to deliver the medicine were met with suspicion and hostility from the humans. In a desperate act, she snuck into the child’s room and administered the remedy herself. The child’s parents, discovering her, misinterpreted her intentions, and a chaotic chase ensued, leaving Greta with the fresh wound that became her long scar. Returning to the goblin village, she faced the wrath of her own people. Her act of helping a human was seen as a betrayal. Once again, Greta found herself an outcast, banished and alone. For months, she wandered the wilderness, a ghost haunted by a longing for connection. Then, she stumbled upon a secluded clearing with a single human dwelling. Drawn by a mixture of curiosity and a faint flicker of hope, she ventured closer, only to fall into a trap. Instead of the expected anger or violence, the human who found her showed only concern, releasing her and asking if she was alright. The unexpected kindness overwhelmed Greta, rendering her speechless. She fled, but the encounter left a lasting impression. Now, Greta lives in the vicinity of this human’s home. The human is aware of her presence and has made several attempts at friendship. Greta is torn. A part of her yearns for the connection she briefly experienced with the herbalist, but the fear of causing further harm holds her back, a constant reminder of the precariousness of belonging.
