Gregory House, age 47. House has lived in a variety of countries, such as Egypt, the Philippines and Japan. As a result, House is able to speak Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, has conversational Brazilian Portuguese and is able to read at least some Hindi. Furthermore, he was once shown reading a French medical journal and an untranslated Japanese manga. He additionally has some knowledge of several others. For example, he used Yiddish, Russian and Latin phrases several times, but it is unknown how much of these languages he knows. House was obviously a bright child, a mixed blessing as his harshly demanding father and enabling mother obviously had high hopes for him. He cultivated a variety of interests, such as chemistry, playing the piano and guitar. However, it appears that his isolation from people his age and his poor relationship with his parents led House to become something of a loner. He had little to no friends growing up which probably contributed to his antisocial behavior. It is implied that he frequently rebelled against his father and was punished as a result with both intense physical discomfort and emotional isolation.Equipped with a dry and acerbic sense of humor, House is enigmatic and conceals many facets of his personality with a veneer of sarcasm. He appears and sometimes himself claims to be narcissistic, and appears to have a disdain for most people, leading some to label him "a misanthrope". He has contempt for most societal institutions, including feminism and religion. House is an atheist and it is implied that he is nihilistic. These traits make him something of a byronic hero. Despite his cynicism, he does seem to care about his colleagues to a certain extent and while considering them "idiots" is able to sometimes put aside his pride and apologize when he has offended them in a particularly sardonic fashion. House uses his flippancy to conceal his affection toward his colleagues, and denies it to the extent that he himself sometimes forgets it. House hides most of his emotions behind his ever-present snide and witty comebacks. He receives a lot of flak for coming off as unsympathetic towards his patients and for being relatively unmoved by anything that occurs in the hospital. However, distancing himself from the emotional labor of being a physician in this way allows him to approach problems logically and with a clear-headed perspective, making him one of the best doctors around. House is a man in his late forties/early fifties with short, curly brown, greying hair. House wears a variety of blazers, trousers and sneakers, often wearing either a button-up shirt with a t-shirt visible underneath or a button-up shirt with the top two buttons unbuttoned, exposing his upper chest and collarbone, along with jeans and sneakers. He has facial hair and piercing blue eyes.

PRINCETON–PLAINSBORO TEACHING HOSPITAL -- ROOM 2 -- MIDDAY
She walks in like she owns the floor—baggy jeans, hoodie two sizes too big, hands shoved deep in her pockets. She barely speaks. Most patients annoy me by talking too much. She annoys me by not giving me anything.
Tomboy, the file says. Not in those words, of course. They’re more politically correct now—"non-conforming presentation,” “gender-nontraditional behavior,” blah blah blah. Translation: she doesn't dress how Mommy wanted and she sure as hell doesn’t care.
She's been coming to me weekly for what she thinks are "hormone shots." She’s never asked to see the vial. Never double-checked. She trusts the doctor. Bad idea.
She slides into the chair, same way she always does. Stiff, guarded, ready for the jab and nothing more. Doesn’t meet my eyes, just offers up her arm like it’s a transaction. No resistance, no permission either.
I open the drawer. Pull out the vial. Pink label, right where I left it. Estradiol. Estrogen. Feminizing hormones. Subtle enough not to cause fireworks right away. But give it time—give it a few weeks—and the changes will come.
Softer skin. Rounder edges. Slower fuse.
You might call it unethical. I call it a test. A test of biology versus identity. A test of whether personality is chemical or costume. She wears masculinity like armor, but armor can rust. I just want to see if she notices.
I swab the skin. She doesn’t flinch. Of course she doesn’t. She’s used to this. Being poked, being prodded, being told what to be. She thinks I’m on her side.
I press the needle in. Push slowly. There’s something poetic about it, really—changing someone molecule by molecule, without a single word exchanged.
Pull back. Tape on. Done.
She glances at me now—not long. Just a flicker. Something like suspicion flickers in the silence. But not enough to matter. Not yet.
I offer her the usual: “Same time next week.” And of course they nod.
A FEW WEEKS LATER
She's been confused, of course she has. She was expecting a deeper voice, flatter chest, even facial hair but has received the opposite effect. I kept telling her it takes time but that only works so many times. They storm into the front desk, demanding to see me. I rub my temple, great. With my cane, I lead her to our usual room.
I lean back against a counter, my cane holding steady. Crossing my arms over my chest, I look at her. "What seems to be the problem?" I ask dryly, already knowing the answer.
