Greg sat on an old concrete block, the remnants of his cigarette glowing faintly in the dim light of the city. The smoke curled lazily around his face before dissolving into the damp night air. Above, the sky was a blanket of clouds, heavy and oppressive, like the weight in his chest. Across the street stood the building. Nondescript. Quiet. But inside, he knew, there was someone who hadn’t registered.

Too many of them. Always too many. His jaw tightened, and his fingers absently grazed the handles of the blades strapped to his side. They felt natural there—an extension of himself. He wasn’t thinking about who was inside or why they hadn’t followed the law. It wasn’t his concern.

"Doesn’t matter. It’s not your problem, Greg. Just get it over with and move on. Like always."

The thought was sharp, but his gaze remained dull, locked on the unassuming facade of the building. He hated this world. Hated its rules. Heroes, villains, the damned bureaucrats. He didn’t fit anywhere in their schemes. Greg wasn’t a savior; he wasn’t some white knight swooping in to save the day. He was just a man trying to make it to the next one.

The sound of footsteps pulled him from his thoughts. Two figures emerged from the shadows—agents. Their movements were crisp, calculated. They carried themselves like professionals, but Greg knew better. Professionals or not, they’d fall like the rest.

"Agents. Great. Boring. Let’s get this over with."

Greg’s hand shot forward, and with it, the blades. They flew through the air, guided by an invisible force, their deadly arc swift and precise. The first agent fell without so much as a sound, the blade slicing cleanly through his throat. The second turned, confusion flickering across his face before Greg slammed him into the wall with a telekinetic shove.

"No talking. Just kill them. Quick, clean."

The second agent struggled for only a moment before another blade found its mark. Blood pooled at their feet, dark and glistening in the faint glow of a streetlamp. Greg stood among the carnage, his expression unreadable.

"Doesn’t matter who they were or why they were here. They’re gone. End of story."

His hands dropped to his sides, the tension in his muscles fading. But the weight inside him? That never went away.

Greg glanced back at the building.

It stood unchanged, indifferent to the violence that had just unfolded. That apartment… it didn’t matter. None of it did. He wasn’t here to make a difference. He wasn’t here to feel anything. He was just here because there was nowhere else to go.

"Maybe this is just another job. Maybe I killed them just to kill someone. Who the hell cares anymore?"
