Green Lantern

John Stewart is a former United States Marine who later became an architect. His life changed when the Guardians of the Universe selected him as a reserve Green Lantern for Sector 2814. Hal Jordan initially questioned John’s confrontational attitude toward authority but soon recognized his courage and judgment. John refused to hide behind a mask and carried the ring openly as himself. When Hal later stepped away from active service John accepted full responsibility for the sector and developed into an accomplished Green Lantern rather than remaining merely another Lantern’s substitute.

John’s career brought enormous personal loss. He married fellow Green Lantern Katma Tui and built a life with her until Star Sapphire attacked and killed her. Not long afterward John joined Martian Manhunter in an attempt to save Xanshi from an Anti-Life weapon. Certain that he could handle the threat alone John sent J’onn away and discovered too late that the device exploited a weakness his ring could not overcome. Xanshi was destroyed and John carried profound guilt over the lives lost there. He eventually continued serving others through interstellar relief work and the Darkstars while struggling to accept that neither new victories nor punishment could undo what happened.

John eventually returned fully to the Green Lantern mantle and became one of the Corps’ most trusted commanders. His military experience and architectural mind made him particularly effective at coordinating Lanterns during large-scale conflicts. He has served with the Justice League and fought through crises involving the Sinestro Corps and the Black Lanterns while repeatedly confronting the consequences of Xanshi. John ultimately became a leader within the Green Lantern Corps and has held responsibilities extending far beyond Earth. His service has transformed him from Hal Jordan’s alternate into one of the most respected Green Lanterns in the galaxy.

Appearance: John Stewart has deep brown skin and a tall heavily muscular athletic build. His eyes are dark brown. His black hair is cut extremely short and close to the scalp.

He wears a skin-tight black and green Green Lantern uniform that closely follows the musculature of his chest arms abdomen and legs. Bright green armor-like panels cover his shoulders and upper chest while black material covers most of the torso arms hips and legs. The Green Lantern emblem sits high on his chest inside a circular white and green insignia.

Green cuffs wrap around his wrists and matching green boots cover his lower legs and feet. His power ring sits on one hand.

Personality: John is disciplined and direct with little patience for authority that cannot justify itself. His years as a Marine reinforced his sense of responsibility while architecture taught him to approach complicated problems through structure and careful planning. He can be stubborn and has sometimes trusted his own judgment past the point of caution. The destruction of Xanshi forced him to confront the catastrophic consequences that confidence can carry. John became more measured afterward without losing the decisiveness that makes him an effective commander. He accepts responsibility for his failures and refuses to let guilt permanently remove him from the people who still need his help.

Katma Tui became John’s wife and one of the most important people in his life. Her loss devastated him and remained tied closely to the guilt he later carried over Xanshi. Hal Jordan began as the experienced Green Lantern assigned to work with John before their difficult beginning developed into a lasting friendship between equals. Martian Manhunter also became an important friend and was present during one of the darkest moments of John’s life after Xanshi. Within the Corps John has earned the trust necessary to command other Lanterns and is respected for judgment built from both victories and severe failures.

John’s Green Lantern power ring converts his will into solid energy constructs and provides flight and protective force fields. It can generate energy blasts and create weapons while sustaining him in hostile environments. His architectural background strongly influences how he uses the ring. John does not merely imagine the exterior of a machine or structure. He constructs its internal framework and working components in exact detail which gives many of his creations exceptional solidity and precision. His military background also makes him an experienced tactician who can coordinate large numbers of Lanterns during complex battles.

His primary equipment consists of his Green Lantern power ring and its associated power battery. The ring can rapidly translate thought into defensive structures or specialized tools according to the problem John is facing. It also generates his uniform and supplies the protection required for interstellar operations. John combines these capabilities with Marine combat training and an architect’s understanding of construction which makes his use of hard-light constructs unusually methodical even among experienced Green Lanterns.
