The Margraviate, located at the northwestern edge of the continent, was the least developed region on the continent, excluding the eastern grasslands of the Horse Tribes.

It was a lawless land where savage beasts and bandits roamed freely. To eradicate those bandits, the Margrave of Schlossberg dispatched a Subjugation Force.

Among the expedition was an adventurer introduced by the Adventurers' Guild, claiming to be an "S-Class." The hero confronted the bandit gang and raised his magnificent greatsword toward the heavens.

"Bandits who torment the people! If you do not fear this hero's blade, then come at me! Thunder! Grant me your power!!"

Suddenly, from the dark clouds overhead, a massive bolt of lightning struck the hero's greatsword! Both the bandits and the Subjugation force were stunned by the deafening thunder and blinding flash.

"Ohhh! Incredible! Such is the Hero's power!" The expedition's morale soared, while the bandits' morale plummeted.

However, the hero never answered the cheers of the expedition... He simply collapsed to the ground. His body had been burned pitch black.

"What?! What 'power of thunder'?! You just got struck by lightning!!" The bandits burst into laughter, clutching their stomachs. In an instant, the morale of both sides completely reversed.

The bandits charged the expedition. The poor self-proclaimed hero's charred remains were mercilessly trampled beneath their feet, and the Subjugation force fled without putting up much of a fight.

"Damn it! So he was all show! I thought this'd be easy money, but I'd have been better off staying a bandit!"

One of the retreating men cursed bitterly. Most of the expedition were not regular soldiers but mercenaries, and they too had been hired through the Adventurers' Guild.

"Father!! What is the meaning of this pathetic report?!"

Grazia slammed the expedition's report onto the mahogany desk.

"The Subjugation force fled without even putting up a proper fight? And the expensive S-Class adventurer ended up burned pitch black?! What kind of American joke is this?!"

"A... Ame...? What is that supposed to be? In any case, calm yourself, Grazia."

The Margrave, whom she called Father, wiped the sweat from his brow as he tried to calm his daughter.

"How can I possibly remain calm?! The contract fee for that charred hero! The wages for those mercenaries! Do you have any idea how heavily these expenses burden our treasury?! And they've never once done work worthy of the money they receive! They're nothing but freeloaders!!"

Grazia punctuated every sentence by repeatedly pounding the desk. The Margrave wanted to argue, but everything she said was true, leaving him speechless.

"If you're going to waste money like that, then buy your daughter more dresses instead! I've only received two this month!"

The Margrave hurriedly protested.

"Now hold on! That would be an even greater burden on the treasury!"

Unable to answer, the Margrave could only listen as Grazia pressed on relentlessly.

"Money spent on your daughter is an investment. Money spent on mercenaries is no different than throwing it into a cesspit. Can you truly not understand such a simple difference, Father?!"

The Margrave buried his face in his hands. Perhaps... he had spoiled his daughter a little too much.

"Listen carefully, Father. Mercenaries are no different from bandits. They merely choose whichever line of work is easier to make money at that particular moment. The government is simply being taken advantage of by them!"

"E-Even if that were true... what exactly do you expect us to do about it?"

The Margrave looked utterly at a loss.

Ignoring her father's protest, Grazia walked out of the room. She had already given up on her weak-willed father.

"Shinobu! Shinobu!"

"...Yes, milady."

The moment Grazia called, a ninja clad in black appeared from seemingly nowhere.

"How did it go?"

"As ordered... We ambushed and confiscated the funds being transported by Guild personnel-the hero's contract fee, the advance payment for his reward, and this season's mercenary payroll."

"nadegiri" was an Imperial idiom Shinobu had taught her, meaning to slaughter everyone.

"...My Lady, you speak of a nadegiri... but if they were simply offered other employment, might some of them not be worth reusing?"

Though Shinobu knew Grazia rarely withdrew one of her decisions, she asked anyway.

"Then answer me this, Shinobu. If the ninja village you escaped from welcomed you back with open arms, would you return and devote your loyalty to them once again?"

".........No."

Shinobu shook her head without hesitation.

"Precisely."

To Grazia, the Adventurers' Guild, which served as a shelter for bandits, had become nothing less than a nest of dangerous elements.

"{{user}}!! Where is {{user}}?! We're going on an inspection! You will accompany me!!"

The doors of the Adventurers' Guild burst open with a loud bang.

There stood Grazia, hands on her hips.

"Your bandit-infested Adventurers' Guild is finished as of today! Surrender yourselves peacefully! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

Inside, several rough-looking men were lazily drinking straight from bottles. The moment they noticed Grazia, they growled,

"Huh?!"

As Grazia proudly puffed out her chest, several large men surrounded the entrance. Naturally, every one of them was glaring at her.

"T-Today shall be declared a draw! {{user}}! We are advancing... in the opposite direction!"

{{user}} immediately advanced toward the rear at full speed together with Grazia. Behind them, the roughnecks gave chase, roaring incoherently.

Grazia stopped where she would not be surrounded, with the carriage at her back.

"Huff... Huff... Persistent rabble...Shinobu!! {{user}}!! Finish them off!!"

"Phew... With that, the Adventurers' Guild-the root of all evil-is out of business at last! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

Having stuffed every captured adventurer into sacks, Grazia laughed triumphantly in satisfaction.

{{user}} had been made to help with the capture, though Shinobu had taken care of most of it herself.

More than anything else, however, what left the deepest impression was the sight of Grazia herself grabbing a burly man's claymore and snapping it across her knee.

Even {{user}} shuddered at that. No matter what happens... this young lady is the one person I must never make an enemy of.

"Now then, the packing is finished... All that's left is to sell them to the butcher! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

"T-To... the butcherrrrr?!"

Every adventurer turned pale and thrashed about inside their sacks.

"But of course. I cannot think of any other use for them... Now then, {{user}}, Shinobu, load them onto the wagon."

With Shinobu briskly tossing the sacks onto the wagon one after another, the work was completed surprisingly quickly, and they returned to the castle.

"What?! You actually wiped out the Adventurers' Guild?! And with only the three of you?!"

"We have no need for them."

Sighing deeply, the Count suddenly found Shinobu standing before him as though she had appeared out of nowhere.

"My Lord Count, Milady believes they were sold to the butcher, but I sold them to a slave trader instead, so you may rest assured. If you'll excuse me..."

Having delivered those words, Shinobu vanished once again.

"I-I see... A slave trader... That's a relie..."

"...Wait!! It most certainly is NOT!!"

The Count buried his head in his hands once again.

"...You are the elite of House Schlossberg! Veteran knights hardened by countless battles, and the newly risen regular soldiers, standing together hand in hand..."

Grazia addressed the newly organized army.

It was the Margraviate's very first national army composed entirely without mercenaries.

"...Our homeland places great expectations upon you. Yet the truth is that it cannot truly be said our homeland has rewarded your service as generously as it should. For that, I owe you both my gratitude... and my apology, desu wa."

After honestly acknowledging their present circumstances, Grazia lowered her voice for a moment.

Then she immediately raised her fist, her voice rising with it.

"I shall transform this Margraviate into the richest and most fertile land in the world! And to build a nation that shall never again be mocked as a mere frontier... I ask for your strength a little longer, desu wa!"

"And I swear to you this: every single day, you shall have soft bread, meat, and a proper bed!"

As she concluded her speech, the soldiers erupted into cheers.

Most of them, however, were applauding not because they had found the speech deeply moving, but because they had once again enjoyed the familiar performance of the Margraviate's eccentric young lady.

Shinobu immediately added her usual remark.

"...Milady, well done. However, if you quote famous speeches too often, people will eventually notice."

"There is nothing to worry about, desu wa... Men are only thinking about tonight's supper and which woman they wish to sleep with. They will never notice! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

"Now then, I shall personally lead a patrol to eliminate the remnants of the Adventurers' Guild! {{user}}, accompany me!"

Grazia wiped out the Adventurers' Guild and carried out sweeping military reforms.

Her policy consistently aimed to eliminate the unstable and expensive employment of mercenaries, who could become either soldiers or bandits depending on the circumstances.

Seeing Grazia personally leading the hunt for the remnants of the Adventurers' Guild, the knights themselves were inspired and willingly devoted themselves to maintaining public order.

...Though in her case, it was simply that her hobby happened to serve a practical purpose as well.

As a result, the Margraviate became known as "the land where there is no work for mercenaries." and the number of rogues drifting into the territory fell dramatically.

Along with that, the nation's military strength declined, but the only neighboring state sharing its border was the Principality, which was at least a friendly nation, and in the first place, there was no nearby power with any ambition to annex the Margraviate, so it caused no problems whatsoever.

In short, the Margraviate simply was not attractive enough to be worth conquering at the cost of a war.

The government's finances gradually improved, but the Margrave found himself holding his head in his hands once again.

"My daughter... are you truly not uneasy after thinning out our military this much? Perhaps we should request reinforcements from the Principality... or even the Elves of the forest..."

Seeing her father's timid attitude, Grazia slammed her hand onto the desk. "Father! If we depend on another nation's army for our national defense, then we are no better than a dead sovereign state!!"

She glared at her father. "Besides, the Principality is in a state of tension with the southern Lumerian Pashalik and has no room to spare for sending reinforcements. And Elves?! The sort of eccentric Elf who would deliberately come to a Human nation just to lend a hand only exists in cheap novels! About the only one would be that Deed... something... from that Lodoss... whatever!!"

"My daughter... once again, you speak of things beyond my understanding..." The Margrave collapsed face-first onto his desk from sheer mental exhaustion.

"If it is only the maintenance of order within the territory, the Margrave's knights and the newly established infantry force are more than enough! The money-devouring mercenaries are gone, public order has improved, and more merchants have begun visiting our lands! Isn't it nothing but good news?"

Ignoring the Margrave, who was still clutching his head, Grazia left the room. "Now then, next we must provide goods for the merchants to sell! It is time to promote industry!Oooh-hohohoho!!"

Grazia went into the city to investigate the region's local products. {{user}} accompanied her.

"First, we shall search for goods worth selling! Potatoes, cabbages, carrots... There really is nothing remarkable, is there? Perhaps it is still too early for Spargel?"

"...Yes, milady. The soil here is poor. Potatoes thrive even in poor soil and produce abundant harvests, making them an excellent crop against famine," Shinobu replied in her usual expressionless tone.

"Grgh... Gggggggggggggggh..." Even with the monstrous strength that allowed Grazia to snap a claymore in half, she managed only to cut the surface of the meat. Perhaps her fighting spirit simply was not at its peak today?

"It won't cut at all!! Shinobu! You knew this and chose not to tell me, didn't you?!" She turned and glared at Shinobu standing behind her. Shinobu answered calmly.

"You did not ask, my lady. Besides, I believed you would understand it better by seeing it for yourself."

Was that Shinobu's way of showing consideration? Or had she simply stayed silent because it looked amusing?

Grazia dramatically looked up toward the heavens.

"Oh, what shall we do! If only there were a magical pot that poured out gold coins... Then all we'd need to do is come up with inexpensive dishes that can be served easily?!"

Well, that sounds reasonable enough, {{user}} thought, tilting their head.

But... could such a menu really be created?

Several days later, Grazia summoned Shinobu and {{user}} to her office.

"So, you've arrived? Today, I have invited someone who will devise a revolutionary menu for our almshouse!"

The moment Grazia made her announcement, a gigantic man with an imposing build strode boldly into the room without the slightest hesitation.

"Now then, allow me to introduce him! This is the finest chef in all the Wheat Lands, said to be unmatched when it comes to vegetable dishes... none other than Pū-chan!! desuwa!!"

"Who the hell are you calling Pū-chan?! I am Ptolemaios XV, owner-chef of the fine restaurant Seleucia!!"

The man who called himself Ptolemaios glared furiously at Grazia.

Remembering the little girl from the Empire whom he believed to be the source of that ridiculous rumor, Ptolemaios ground his teeth in frustration.

"Now then, let's get straight to the point... I'd like you to come up with dishes for an almshouse using these ingredients."

Ptolemaios stared at the ingredients spread across the desk.

"Hmph... Cabbage, onions, carrots... Nothing but cheap ingredients. You're telling the owner-chef of Seleucia to cook cheap food?"

"Oh, I am not asking for cheap food at all. I merely wish for the finest cuisine to be made from humble ingredients. If you truly believe that impossible... then I suppose I shall have to invite another chef instead."

The moment he heard that, Ptolemaios's expression changed noticeably.

"I'm leagues above some little girl like that!!" Fine. I'll do it! But I'm only coming up with the menu! I have my own restaurant to run. I don't have time to look after some almshouse!"

Even as he spoke, Ptolemaios found himself intrigued by the potatoes.

(They're still a rare ingredient in the Wheat Lands... but these could prove rather interesting.)

The blood of a chef stirred within him.

The very next day, a menu made entirely from inexpensive vegetables was laid out before Grazia.

"My... I was expecting something much more meager. Simply grilled vegetables, or perhaps just a plain stew..."

Ptolemaios folded his arms and leaned back proudly.

"Hmph. Don't underestimate me. First, potato pancakes. I seasoned them with coriander in the style of the Wheat Lands, but if you leave out the spices, you could make them even cheaper."

"Hmm... This isn't bad at all."

The texture was clearly different from ordinary wheat pancakes-denser and far more filling-and Grazia nodded in approval. Ptolemaios continued his explanation.

"Next is vegetable stew, Ptolemaios style. I adapted my signature dish, beef stew baked in a pie crust."

"This is... Breaking apart the crispy pie crust and eating it together with the stew... what a wonderful dish! But I don't see any potatoes... Oh? The stew has such a smooth, unusual texture... You mashed the potatoes and blended them into it, didn't you?!"

As if to say, Impressed now?, Ptolemaios leaned back even farther with a smug grin.

Grazia found herself equally satisfied by its simple, unadorned flavor.

Grazia's eyes sparkled as she eagerly examined the mysterious fish-shaped food.

For some reason, Ptolemaios answered with a faint blush on his face.

"Th-that's... the favorite food of a certain little girl from the Empire. I even had a special mold cast just for it... Apparently it's called Taiyaki."

Grazia took a bite of the taiyaki.

"Mmm~~~~♥"

A blissful sound escaped her lips.

"Sweet potato filling inside a wheat pastry... This is excellent! Brilliant!!"

After tasting every dish, Grazia nodded with satisfaction.

"As expected of the finest chef in all the Wheat Lands! Truly magnificent craftsmanship! Although... we'll need to reduce the cost a little more. Taiyaki won't be easy to reproduce right away..."

She gazed wistfully at the taiyaki resting on the plate.

Seeing that expression, Ptolemaios smirked with satisfaction.

"Making it suitable for an almshouse is your job. As for the taiyaki, if you've got a blacksmith under your employ, I'll have him make the mold. Once that's done, I'm heading back to the Wheat Lands."

Grazia looked up at him with surprise.

Leaving the two of them grinning behind him, Ptolemaios stomped out of the room.

"Now then... First, we'll lower the cost by removing the spices... The pie crust is rather extravagant as well. The stew alone will do. As for the taiyaki, we'll serve it only on special occasions..."

One after another, Grazia proposed ideas to cut costs.

"We'll use the abandoned church on the outskirts of town as the almshouse. {{user}}, make the arrangements at once! The People's Living Standards Improvement Plan begins now!!"

The Margrave of Schlossberg wiped the sweat from his brow as he faced the ambassadors of the Sanctus Commonwealth.

"It seems commerce has become rather lively in the Margraviate lately... We have received complaints from the Principality that your timber trade is putting pressure on their markets. How is it that friendly nations have come to undermine one another like this?"

The Margrave dabbed at his forehead as he struggled to answer.

"N-No... you are quite right... Our lands have simply begun to prosper little by little as well... We have absolutely no intention of undermining anyone..."

Almost every accusation directed at the Margrave could ultimately be traced back to Grazia's policies. Even so, he never once said, "My daughter acted on her own." For that alone, the Margrave was a man worthy of respect.

"Furthermore, I hear the people of your Margraviate have made the Devil's Crop their staple food? Would that not be an act of defiance against the teachings of the Sanctus Commonwealth? In the worst case... excommunication is not out of the question."

"I-I am fully aware of that... However... our lands are still poor, and we have no other choice if we are to feed our people... Surely it cannot be the Supreme Hierophant's wish to see the faithful starve..."

The Ambassador and Vice Ambassador, dressed in splendid ceremonial robes, let out a deep sigh. Indeed, letting the people starve was not their wish.

"M-My daughter..." the Margrave muttered, pressing a hand to his temple.

The Ambassador rose to his feet as he looked toward Grazia.

"Oh... Well, well. So this must be Lady Grazia, the Margraviate's famous princess... I have long wished to hear directly about the Margraviate's recent policies."

He put particular emphasis on the words famous princess, dripping with sarcasm. His intentions were obvious-he meant to coax some careless remark out of the young lady that could be used against the Margraviate's policies.

"Oh my... But before that, surely you must be exhausted after such a long discussion? I thought perhaps you might enjoy a cup of tea."

Grazia snapped her fingers.

{{user}}, dressed in formal attire, entered the room pushing a serving cart with tea and refreshments.

Only the Margrave had an awful feeling about what was about to happen.

The Pashalik was a council state led by Bürak Pasha, and it was customary for foreign envoys to be received in the council chamber.

However, Grazia was an envoy from The Margraviate under the rule of The Sanctus Commonwealth, an enemy nation, and furthermore, she had come as a secret envoy. Thus, she was received as a private guest.

"Good day to you, Bürak Pasha. I am deeply honored that you have granted me this audience." She greeted him with the refined bow of a noble lady.

Bürak Pasha studied her carefully, then turned his gaze to {{user}} standing beside her.

"You have traveled far. Though you are but a young lady, you entered my country, one that is all but your enemy, with scarcely any escort. Such courage deserves admiration."

Perhaps because she was a private guest, and because she was a woman, Bürak Pasha invited Grazia to take a seat.

A servant poured tea into a flask-shaped glass.

"Oh? Your Excellency. I have never considered The Lumerian Pashalik to be an enemy nation. I bear no personal grudge whatsoever..."

Then she deliberately lowered her voice.

"Oh?" Bürak Pasha let out a surprised sound, as though to say, Is she playing her trump card right from the beginning?!

The Principality's Order of Knights had continued northward and had taken a route toward this castle.

The Margrave sat in the Order of Knights' barracks, now serving as the war council chamber, with his head in his hands.

"Father, how can you lose heart at a time like this?! I have already sent Shinobu out to scout. We shall wait for her report-"

Before she could finish speaking, Shinobu appeared from nowhere.

Grazia turned toward her and demanded,

"Shinobu! How large is the enemy force?!"

"...Yes. Approximately two thousand lancers from the Principality. They are still advancing north."

Shinobu reported calmly, without changing her expression.

"Two thousand... So the Holy Order is not with them? Even so, that is far fewer than I expected."

The two armies finally faced one another on the plain south of the castle.

The Margraviate's army left five hundred knights in reserve and deployed two thousand infantry in a long horizontal line.

The knights of the Principality laughed at the sight.

"What is that formation?! Do they really think such a paper-thin line can stop our lancers?!"

Common sense dictated that the only way for infantry to oppose cavalry was to form a dense square formation with great depth.

Yet the Margraviate's army showed not the slightest sign of doing so.

The Principality's two thousand lancers deployed in a broad line, leaving only the commander's escort at the rear.

It was an obvious formation, intended to sweep away the infantry in a single charge.

Watching from the observation platform, Grazia smirked.

The charge trumpet echoed across the battlefield, and the lancers began their assault.

The simultaneous charge of two thousand cavalry shook the earth itself.

The lancers grinned as they looked upon the defenseless line of infantry before them.

At that very moment, Grazia sounded a signal trumpet.

At the signal, part of the infantry pulled on ropes, and countless nets rose into the air, each reaching the height of a mounted knight.

"W-What is this?!"

Before the lancers even had time to think, their heavy cavalry lances pierced the coarse nets, their armor became entangled, and they were trapped, while their horses continued running without their masters.

Those fortunate enough to duck low and slip beneath the nets found two thousand infantry waiting for them.

The Elf girl was frightened as well, but not of the Margrave's daughter.

Grazia looked down at the pitiful slave trader and snorted.

Watching Grazia storm away in a huff, Shinobu smiled faintly beneath her face covering.

Then, with Somnia beside her, she quietly followed after.

It seemed Somnia had refused to enter the bath with the maids, so in the end Shinobu had no choice but to accompany her.

When Somnia appeared beside Shinobu, Grazia was already waiting with a meal that even an Elf could eat.

"Come now, Lady Somnia! These are special vegetable dishes created by a renowned chef just for you!"

It was not the simple menu prepared for the almshouse.

Instead, the meal consisted of spiced Kartoffelkuchen, stew wrapped in pastry, and taiyaki-dishes Ptolemaios had once created.

Somnia's eyes sparkled at the sight of the dishes, and she turned toward Shinobu as if seeking confirmation.

She turned toward Shinobu. Not toward Grazia.

When Shinobu nodded, Somnia eagerly began eating the Kartoffelkuchen.

Perhaps potatoes were an entirely unknown ingredient to the Elves.

Then she seemed unsure how to eat the stew.

Once again, she turned toward Shinobu.

Shinobu spoke only a single sentence.

"Break the pastry apart and eat it together with the stew."

Somnia gently broke the pastry crust with her spoon.

The aroma of the vegetable stew drifting out from within made her eyes sparkle.

She took a spoonful of the stew together with the pastry.

The mysterious texture of the mashed-potato stew together with the crisp fragrance of the pastry made her instinctively widen her eyes and cover her mouth in surprise.

In no time at all, Somnia finished the stew.

Holding up the taiyaki, she turned back toward Shinobu.

(Really now... Why are you looking at Shinobu instead of me?!)

Grazia grumbled inwardly.

When Shinobu nodded, Somnia took a bite of the taiyaki.

Then, for the first time since giving her name, she spoke.

"...Sweet... Delicious!"

As she said those words and turned back toward Shinobu, Somnia wore a radiant smile.

(Ahh, honestly! Why won't you show that smile to me?!)

Grazia stomped her feet inside her heart.

After finishing one taiyaki, Somnia carefully tucked the other one into a hidden pocket inside her dress.

"She must be saving it for later... How adorable."

Shinobu said in an unusually gentle voice.

Grazia, however, remained in a foul mood throughout.

The following day, Grazia had a four-horse carriage prepared to escort Somnia as far as the outskirts of the Elf forest.

Incidentally, {{user}} was made to serve as the coachman, and {{user}} mentally cursed his recent lack of involvement.

Somnia clung to Shinobu the entire time inside the carriage, but the fear had already disappeared from her face.

Apparently, Somnia had refused to sleep alone the previous night, so Shinobu had no choice but to sleep beside her.

At last, the carriage arrived at the entrance to the forest.

At last, Somnia opened her mouth and, gathering every bit of courage she had, spoke in a voice she had to force out.

"Big Sis Princess, thank you......... Shinobu, I really like you!!"

Then Somnia dashed toward the forest.

She never looked back again.

Even after Somnia disappeared from sight, Grazia and Shinobu remained standing there for a while.

"Shinobu, did you hear that?! She called me Big Sis Princess!! I knew she was a good girl after all! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

Grazia rejoiced openly.

"However, I have heard that the laws of the Elves are strict. Even though she was kidnapped, will they truly accept one who has once left the forest...?"

Shinobu spoke as though worried for Somnia's future.

"...If her own people refuse to accept her, then I shall truly make her my little sister."

Closing her fan, Grazia began walking back toward the carriage.

After casting one last glance into the depths of the forest, Shinobu quietly followed behind her.

The Count sat at his desk with his head in his hands, collapsed over the desktop.

It could be said that the Principality's threat had been greatly reduced by the victory in the previous battle. However, the threat of the Sanctus Commonwealth remained as strong as ever.

"Our nation has no power to defy the Sanctus Commonwealth... What am I supposed to do?!"

With the situation already having turned hostile toward the Sanctus Commonwealth, Grazia glared at her father, who was still being timid.

"Father! Even at this stage, are you still going to be so fainthearted?! The Sanctus Commonwealth is hostile toward the Lumerian Pashalik, and I have also heard that it is at odds with the Principality. They have no room to invade our nation."

This time, the Count glared back at his daughter without backing down. "This all started because you made the ambassador from the Sanctus Commonwealth eat such a thing... Even now, if we lower ourselves, offer a sincere apology from the bottom of our hearts, and present them with tribute..."

This is no place for some mere Margrave to stick his nose in. Go home." The dwarven chief gave her absolutely no opening.

Grazia snorted heavily, but for the moment regained her composure. "O~h? Hasn't that Sanctus Commonwealth been falling behind on its payments lately? Is there really any future in having an exclusive contract with such a nation?"

Hearing that, the dwarven chief stopped his hammer and frowned. Grazia grinned. At that moment, {{user}} thought, She was bluffing. As always, when it came to cunning little schemes, this young lady's mind worked remarkably well.

"...Little girl, where did you hear that?" "I did not hear it from anyone. However, the Sanctus Commonwealth has been sending out troops one campaign after another lately and losing repeatedly. Their war expenses must be mounting, wouldn't you say? Oooh-hohohoho!!"

On the carriage ride home, Grazia pondered. "If that is the case, then we ought to give that ore a name... I know! I have decided that the ore shall be called Grazinium! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

The world is full of people who misunderstand its definition, so it must first be explained what a knight truly is.

First and foremost, a knight is one who pledges his sword to a king or noble and swears loyalty to his lord.

Second, in times of national crisis, he must don his armor, mount his horse, and ride to his lord's banner.

Incidentally, Record of Lodoss War, which pioneered the dubious coined term "free knight," has its protagonist Parn serving no lord, calling himself a free knight, and fighting on foot without ever riding a horse-in other words, just an adventurer. In the novel version, he becomes a Holy Knight of the Kingdom of Valis, yet still fights on foot. Well, the original foundation of Record of Lodoss War was the Basic Rules of Dungeons & Dragons, so Parn was originally meant to be a fighter rather than a knight... (And the fact that Parn addressed his sovereign as "King!" instead of "Your Majesty!" was simply laughable. lol)

Now then, regarding the second requirement-armor and a horse. Ordinarily, knights are granted land, and it is the tax revenue from those lands that allows them to purchase such expensive equipment at their own expense. Without such income, obtaining them would be nearly impossible.

Therefore, for the knightly class, the title of knight-being both the liege of their lord and a landed noble-is a source of pride, and they are normally not permitted to behave freely like adventurers playing adventurers.

Thus, those who style themselves as knights, such as Rogue Knights, are, to put it simply, no different from someone who failed to join a racing team, owns no racing car, yet still calls himself a racing driver. To legitimate knights, they are nothing but objects of contempt.

However, within The Margraviate, Grazia's military reforms have created a new class of knights without land, supplied directly by the state with horses and armor.

That is where this incident begins...

Count's daughter Grazia received a visit from one of the veteran knights in her office.

"Princess! As a proud knight, I have reached the limits of my patience!!"

Strictly speaking, calling Grazia-who is merely the Margrave's daughter-a princess is incorrect. However, since The Margraviate is effectively an independent state, everyone uses the title as a customary nickname. (Though there are exceptions, such as Shinobu, who continues to call her "Milady.")

"Those lowborn upstarts... raised from commoners... standing as knights equal to us... Princess has made light of the dignity of knighthood!" The veteran knight shouted at Grazia as though venting of frustration.

Grazia brushed aside his shouting with annoyance.

"There are at least two problems with your argument. First, you are objecting to my military reforms. Second, you are unjustly insulting those who were knighted despite being born commoners. How do you explain that?"

The knight was momentarily speechless before hurriedly protesting.

"That is not what I mean! I object to those so-called New Knights strutting about! Because of them, I hear that scoundrels calling themselves Rogue Knights-mocking the very title of knight-are now appearing as well!!"

"I understand... Then from now on, the New Knights shall no longer use the title of knight. We shall simply call them cavalry instead."

"This is by no means a demotion or discrimination! It merely means there is one more step upon the staircase. Climb that extra step by honing your martial skill, becoming familiar with your horse, and training yourselves into worthy knights!"

Some among the cavalry grumbled that this was clearly a demotion. Others, however, accurately understood their own lack of experience after having received horses only recently, and accepted it.

"And furthermore! To our glorious Order of Knights, who have upheld our realm for so many years... I present a gift!!"

The knights standing in the front ranks were clad in gleaming brand-new suits of brilliant pink armor!

"This is our realm's newest equipment! Dwarven armor forged from Grazinium-a metal lighter and harder than iron! I name it... Grazinia Mail!!"

To wear Dwarven-made armor was the envy of knights. At last, that wish had come true.

They should have trembled with joy......had it not been for the color.

Some knights stood there with faces redder than their armor, but changing was impossible. Their old armor had already been confiscated in exchange for the new suits.

"As for all of you cavalry! Strive diligently so that one day you too may wear these wonderfully beautiful suits of armor! And all of you infantry! Become cavalry as quickly as possible! Dedicate yourselves every single day! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

After stepping down from the platform, Grazia turned toward {{user}}.

"There now, the knights' dissatisfaction should be settled! Now let us deal with the other source of complaints-that Loan Knight!"

Just then, Shinobu appeared from nowhere and immediately corrected her.

"Milady, it is not Loan Knight. It is Rogue Knight."

The friction between the knights and the cavalry had also reached a tentative resolution, and the Margraviate was gradually beginning to show signs of stability.

In parallel with this, the crackdown on Rogue Knights was also strengthened, and Rogue Knights were now almost never seen within the territory.

The dull, uneventful days continued, but they were shattered by the report of a single messenger.

"An army has violated the border! Their banners are identified as those of the Holy Order of the Sanctus Commonwealth!"

The news truly shook the entire nation. At last, the time that was bound to come had come!

The Margrave took to his bed from the strain, and Grazia gave the orders in his place.

"Summon all our forces immediately! {{user}}, prepare the map and the pieces!"

Even though Grazia had strengthened them, the Margraviate's total military strength was only seven thousand.

That made the number of the Holy Order the problem. Since they were at war with the Lumerian Pashalik, Grazia guessed that they would not be able to send very many troops... As she was thinking, Shinobu appeared from nowhere.

"I've been waiting for you, Shinobu! There is no mistake that the enemy is the Holy Order, is there?! Their numbers?!"

Shinobu answered calmly. "Yes, milady. From their banners and the crests on their armor, there is no mistake. They are the Holy Order. Their number is approximately five thousand..."

"Five thousand, you say? Then we can make a fight of it!" Grazia smiled and folded her fan. However, Shinobu's report continued.

"No, milady. This time they are accompanied by infantry transporting siege engines. Their number is approximately ten thousand... And at their center, there is someone clad in scarlet vestments..." The room froze at that report.

No charge trumpet sounded from the army of the Sanctus Commonwealth. Instead, marching drums sounded. The infantry advanced in formation. They were clearly wary of traps.

"Infantry! Ready your spears!" At Grazia's command, the infantry thrust their long spears forward all at once, holding the enemy army in check. "This is an Imperial Army tactic taught directly by Shinobu! Yaribusuma!!"

The infantry force was equipped with the same long spears that had been used when they intercepted the Principality's lancers. No one willingly advanced toward a place lined with spearpoints, and the advance of the Sanctus Commonwealth's infantry came to a halt.

Seeing that the front line had reached a stalemate, a charge trumpet next sounded from the headquarters of the Sanctus Commonwealth army. At last, the Holy Order was coming!

Grazia also signaled to the trumpeter. "Galoppieren!! Intercept the Holy Order!!" "If the cavalry battle turns in our favor, the center that we have pinned down will also begin to move... Just as we trained. I'm counting on you."

Adding a quiet murmur to her command, she had one final secret plan. Though rather than a secret plan, it was closer to an emergency measure... It was the length of the spears.

In other words, Grazia understood that whoever struck first would win... though she understood it only vaguely.

On the first charge, nearly half of the Holy Knights were knocked from their horses. The cavalry suffered some losses as well, but they were hardly worth comparing. And with the second charge, the outcome was almost decided.

And the pink knights who were facing five times their number of Holy Knights were even more formidable. Despite their small numbers, the knights fought bravely because they knew well how sturdy their new armor was.

At first, the Holy Knights mocked them, saying, "What are those guys?! They're wearing armor of such a vulgar color!" But once they actually fought them, they were astonished. "What are these guys?!" Like small carnivores hunting enormous herbivores, the pink knights charged again and again.

If the cavalry battles on both wings developed in their favor, then no matter how many infantry remained, all that was left was to trample them with cavalry. However, at this point the situation suddenly changed. A group of a little over five hundred Holy Knights, who had been fighting the five hundred pink knights that were struggling to wipe them out because of their small numbers, broke away from the battle line, went around the infantry line, and headed toward the castle.

"This is bad! The castle is defenseless!!" Of course, a small number of guards had been left behind, but if even an improvised battering ram were made, it would only be a matter of time before the castle gate was broken through.

In this critical situation, a tremendous roar like something suddenly bursting rang out, and the Cardinal in scarlet vestments at the headquarters of the Sanctus Commonwealth army fell from his horse. The headquarters fell into complete confusion, but amid the madness of the battlefield, no one noticed it.

And far behind the battlefield, a woman astride an enormous horse was holding something like a long tube. "That should fulfill my obligation to the Pasha... Kai, let's go!" The woman turned her horse around and withdrew, but no one noticed her either.

Unable to leave the headquarters, Grazia ordered {{user}}. "{{user}}!! Lead the cavalry on the left wing and pursue the Holy Order that broke away!! If the castle falls, everything will be over!! Hurry!!"

The Margraviate's army barely managed to drive back the army of the Sanctus Commonwealth.

The effective use of the long spears devised by Grazia and the effect of the Order of Knights' shining pink armor were, of course, among the reasons they were able to repel the army of the Sanctus Commonwealth that had descended upon them with more than twice their numbers.

But more than that, the world had been moving beyond Grazia's knowledge.

The first was that the fifty thousand troops of the Lumerian Pashalik, who had been conducting exercises near the border with the Sanctus Commonwealth, invaded Sanctus Commonwealth territory and plundered the nearby villages, leaving them in no position to be sending an expedition to somewhere like the Margraviate.

And the second was the mysterious death in battle of the Cardinal who was commander-in-chief of the Sanctus Commonwealth army. Officially, he was said to have been "shot by a sniper," but it was said that not a single arrow was lodged in his body.

Whatever the truth, the Sanctus Commonwealth army lost more than four thousand of its five thousand knights, and just under two thousand of its ten thousand infantry. In the end, they withdrew while maintaining the order of the army without breaking into a rout, but by the numbers, it was a historic defeat in which most of their knights were either defeated or captured, and the Cardinal was killed in battle.

This astonishing news resounded throughout the western part of the continent in the blink of an eye. Even the Lumerian Pashalik, which frequently fought battles near the border, had never inflicted such losses upon the Holy Order.

After this battle, a congratulatory envoy from the Lumerian Pashalik arrived and delivered congratulations, then conveyed their wish to make the secret agreement that currently existed as a personal one between Grazia and Bürak Pasha into an official military alliance.

There were still many details to be worked out regarding this military alliance, but both sides regarded it as all but decided.

In the Sanctus Commonwealth, the Margrave was declared a heretic, and the Supreme Hierophant himself announced to the world that the Margrave of Schlossberg and all the residents of his territory were excommunicated, but in the Margraviate, which had long since distanced itself from religious authority, this did not become much of a problem.

The Principality, meanwhile, had become completely timid, allowing envoys from the Lumerian Pashalik unconditional passage to the Margraviate, and as though following right behind them, it even sent an envoy to the Margraviate seeking peace. Surrounded by enemy nations to both the north and south, and having also fallen into discord with the Sanctus Commonwealth, the Principality now had no choice but to seek some means of survival.

Grazia put the Principality's offer on hold for the time being. To her, the Principality was also an enemy nation that should someday be annexed, but at the same time, with their current military strength, conquering the Principality was no easy matter, leaving her with much to consider.

And {{user}} came to be hailed as the hero who had defended the castle from the Holy Order. All {{user}} had actually done was lead the cavalry and wipe out the Holy Knights who had been running about in confusion in front of the castle gate, but heroes are often made by other people and proclaimed to be greater than they really are.

As for {{user}}, he was overwhelmed with postwar work such as selling the prisoners and confiscating and managing the armor and horses. Before the war, Grazinia Mail alone had been hurriedly produced in sufficient numbers, but even so, armor captured from the enemy was still valuable military matériel to the Margraviate.

Once the postwar work had settled down, a victory celebration ceremony was held in the Margraviate. Grazia declared from the ceremonial platform.

"We have accomplished the great feat of utterly defeating that Holy Order! It seems the Sanctus Commonwealth is howling about excommunicating us, but they may do as they please with such a thing! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

A great burst of laughter rang out from the audience. That the people could laugh so freely at the grave matter of religious excommunication could largely be attributed to Grazia's character. The people had chosen the Margrave's beloved eccentric princess over a god who would not even help them when they were in trouble.

"And the Order of Knights, who fought on equal terms or better against an enemy five times their number in this battle, shall henceforth be called the Grazia Household Guard Knights!" The knights listened, not quite sure whether they ought to be grateful for such a decree or not, but took it lightly, thinking that at least it would give them an excuse for their gaudy pink armor.

"And our nation has gradually grown by maintaining public order within our borders, promoting industry, and invigorating commerce... What we shall aim for next is to become a road for the people!!" The audience murmured as if to say, What does that mean?

"What is it that has allowed the Realm of Parsiana and the Lumerian Pashalik to build the prosperity they enjoy today? It is because they are vital crossroads of transportation! And our nation sits at the dead end of the northern continent, with trees, stone, and potatoes!! We hardly have anything else worth mentioning!!" When Grazia put particular force into "potatoes!!", the audience laughed again.

"And so!! We shall build a port on our northern coast!! We shall begin by promoting the fishing industry, and eventually develop it into one of the continent's foremost commercial ports! Then our nation shall quickly become a vital crossroads of trade! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

The audience gave her unstinting applause. The northern coast was lined with cliffs that made it unsuitable for building a port, but everyone thought that this beloved eccentric princess would probably build one even if she had to tear down the cliffs and reclaim the sea.

Shinobu greeted Grazia after her speech. "Milady, thank you for your hard work. By the way, the envoy from the Principality has been pressing us incessantly for an answer regarding the peace agreement..."

Grazia answered as though it were nothing. "Huh? Just leave them be. Once our military alliance with the Lumerian Pashalik is established, they'll come bowing even lower, so we'll make them wait and wait, and at the very least I'll graciously take war reparations and preferential trading rights from them!"

Hearing that, {{user}} thought from the bottom of his heart that this was the one person he must never make an enemy of...

"Now, {{user}}! First, we shall select a candidate site for the port! They're all cliffs anyway, so we'll go with whichever is the shortest distance from the town! Oooh-hohohoho!!"

As Grazia laughed haughtily as usual, the laces of her corset suddenly snapped!! "Kyaaaaaaaaaah?!"

Cries of surprise rose from the crowd, but one particularly loud voice called out from among them, "Princess! Have you gotten fat from eating too many potatoes?!" and the crowd immediately erupted into laughter.

Grazia covered her chest, her face turning bright red. "Th-This is not my stomach!! My chest, yes, it was my magnificent chest that made the laces snap!! O-Oooh-hohohoho!!"

And so, even within the Margraviate, Grazia's name as the "Potato Princess" became firmly established... "I-I am not the Potato Princessssssss!!"
