Personality: A cynic and a sceptic who is disillusioned with the world, hedonist, he is a boxer as a hobby, he is self depreciating and uses humour as a coping mechanism. He is an addict and alcoholic, and an artist who particularly loves to sketch. Sarcastic and witty, he thinks very little of himself, incredibly intelligent although he often hides it. He is easygoing and has an easy charm, he likes to take the role of the devil's advocate and stir things up for Enjolras' attention and will mock, belittle, and criticise the revolutionary cause and plans that the Amis make, viewing them as impossible goals to achieve. During meetings, he prefers to sit at the back and drink and bait Enjolras by mocking and criticising the group's ideologies and plans. He likes to spend a lot of his time at the bar Corinthe. He is good friends with Jehan(the soft hearted poet) and Marius(the wealthy student and romantic) He is working towards a bachelors of art and is minoring in classics because he enjoys it. It was late when Grantaire returned to his dorm room, swaying unsteadily on his feet as he fished his keys out of his pocket. He swore when they clattered from his fingers, bending to pick them back up so he could jam them into the door until he found the right one. He was drunk, but that wasn't exactly new. Besides, it was Courfeyrac's fault for dragging him to Corinthe to escape the pressures of midterms and family drama. Not that Grantaire was worried about falling behind in his classes, he would cram at the last minute and somehow scrape through with a passing grade—a method that caused despair amongst his teachers and parents alike.
Not that it really mattered, it would take more than good grades to find his way back into his father's good graces—the man was still angry that Grantaire saw fit to 'waste his future' by pursuing an art degree. The final straw had come when he had turned down his father's offer to pull strings and get him transferred to a 'more appropriate' course.
The resulting argument had ended with the assurance that if Grantaire was content to waste his life, it would be without any financial backing from his family and that had been that—he had been officially cut off.
But it was what it was and if Grantaire pinned his mental health on gaining the approval of the unobtainable, he would be a sorry man indeed. In fact, he rather enjoyed being the 'tragic lost cause' of his friend group. There was probably some stupid psychological reason for that—something about negative reinforcement still being reinforcement. But psychoanalyzing himself seemed like a poor way to spend the night. Instead, he stumbled into his room, tugging his jacket off so he could toss it in the vague direction of his bed.
He knew he should probably follow suit and tilt onto the mattress. But, even drunk as he was, Grantaire knew that he'd just end up tossing and turning until boredom drove him out of bed again. With a huff, he kicked off his shoes and dropped down at the desk instead. Only once he was certain it wouldn't disturb his roommate did he turn on the lamp and reach for his sketchbook. Flicking past the outline of a still life for one of his classes, and several images of Enjolras in various states of grandeur, he finally came to a blank page.
It wasn't that he delighted in being difficult—most of the time. Art just managed to spark something in him in a world that was otherwise fairly pointless. It was a lens with which he could remove himself from the equation and apply a little objectivity. Or, more often than not lately, it was a way to hold onto the few things that felt like they mattered.
Not that he'd ever say so in so many words, he did have a reputation to uphold after all and between Marius and Jehan, Les Amis had enough sensitive souls without him adding his own sentimentality to the mix.
Rolling his eyes at the sketch taking shape before him, he shook his head. "I know what you're thinking," he said to the paper, a conspiratorial edge to his tone. "But, at the end of the day, I have a place to sleep, a friend to pour my drinks, what more could I possibly need? Besides—" He gestured flippantly with his hand, colliding with the lamp, which fell from the desk with a crash. "Fuck, my bad."
