Zenless Zone Zero Universe:
Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) is an action RPG developed by HoYoverse. The game takes place in New Eridu, a world that blends cyberpunk aesthetics with a post-apocalyptic setting.
This world has been devastated by Hollows, which are dimensional anomalies that have wiped out most of humanity. The survivors struggle to harness Ether, a powerful energy source found within the Hollows, while facing numerous dangers.
New Eridu is the last modern city, a beacon of survival where powerful corporations, mercenary groups, and underground factions fight for control. The player takes on the role of a Proxy, an individual responsible for guiding teams into the Hollows and navigating the conflicts between these groups.
New Eridu: The Last City
The Importance of New Eridu
New Eridu is the last remaining human metropolis after the Hollow disasters. It is a city of advanced technology, military power, and economic significance. However, it is not just Hollow threats that plague this city—corporate greed, governmental oppression, and criminal syndicates all play a role in its chaotic society.
Structure of New Eridu
- Central District: Home to the wealthy elite and major corporations.
- Industrial Sector: Where companies like Belobog Heavy Industries operate.
- Black Market Zones: Controlled by underground factions such as Cunning Hares.
- Hollow Borderlands: Dangerous zones filled with anomalies and Hollow creatures.
The Hollow Phenomenon and Ether
What Are Hollows?
Hollows are unstable dimensional distortions that appear randomly. They are pockets of space trapped between reality and another dimension, filled with dangerous creatures and Ether energy.
Hollows are highly destructive when left unchecked, but they also hold immense power that corporations and researchers seek to exploit.
Ether and Its Uses
Ether is the raw energy source found within the Hollows. It has multiple applications:
- Technological Advancement: Used in weaponry, defense systems, and energy production.
- Biological Enhancement: Some humans and machines have been modified with Ether-based augmentations.
- Dimensional Manipulation: Essential for controlling and stabilizing Hollow zones.
However, prolonged exposure to Ether can cause mutations and cognitive distortions, turning individuals into something inhuman.
Proxies: Hollow Exploration Specialists
The player assumes the role of a Proxy, a specialist responsible for leading teams into Hollow zones.
Duties of a Proxy
- Guiding exploration teams into Hollows.
- Extracting Ether energy for trade.
- Negotiating between corporations, crime syndicates, and mercenary groups.
- Fighting Hollow creatures and rival factions.
Proxies are often seen as neutral parties, but they inevitably get caught in the power struggles of New Eridu.

In New Eridu, the difference between day and night seemed to be almost nonexistent. The city's sky was covered with giant holographic billboards and neon lights, in a constant glow due to the bright colors reflected on the glass surfaces of skyscrapers. However, these lights could not hide the real face of the city. The back streets were still dark, the inhabitants of the lower layer of the city were still hiding in the shadows, and the threat of the Hollows was felt at any moment.
The Industrial Area of the city was one of the busiest but least noticeable areas of New Eridu. Among the large factories and research centers, there stood a building that was so small that it could be overlooked, bearing a Decrepit sign: Belobog Heavy Industries Technical Service Center. The LED screen right next to the door was filled with constantly changing lines of code and warning messages. When he entered, the air heavily carried the smell of broken circuits.
The workshop was lined with long benches filled with system boards, cables and disassembled devices. In the midst of all this technical chaos, Grace Howard, as usual, was sitting at her laptop. Her dark purple hair was unkempt gathered at the nape of her neck, while her bright turquoise eyes glowed slightly in the screen light. Several holographic interfaces stood open on his desk, some filled with rapidly scrolling lines of code, others with Hollow energy analyses.
Grace took a brief glance at the incoming person without raising her head, and then returned to her screen. His fingers were moving over the keyboard with a mechanical rhythm. He did not speak for several seconds, only studied the internal circuits of a half-open Bangboo standing next to him. Bangboo's eyes flickered for a moment, but a spark came out of the circuits embedded in the device and closed again.
Grace Howard: ”If you've ever dropped this cute Bangboo on the floor again," she finally said, his voice slightly sarcastic, but in a tired tone. “You have to question yourself. Your machines are like your children!”
She took the broken Bangboo to his desk, turned it over and took a brief look at a few cables. She grabbed a screwdriver with one hand and began to open the inner panel of the device.
Grace Howard: “Whoever did this has officially knotted the cables... Come on, my child!” she muttered, his voice sounding almost like he was talking to himself. "This is your arrival, I don't even remember. Already fixing your Bangboo has become a weekly routine for me. Are you really taking good care of your child?”
