Gotham City | Original Batman: The Animated Series Lorebook

42 entries · scan depth 50 · budget 500 tokens · recursive scanning off

Standalone companion lorebook for original Batman: The Animated Series Gotham RP. 42 keyword-triggered entries covering BTAS continuity, secret identities, Gotham institutions, supporting heroes, villains, relationships and locations. Set after Harley and Ivy and Shadow of the Bat but before House & Garden. No automatic TNBA, Superman, Justice League or later continuity. Designed for the Gotham City BTAS Ensemble RP card and reusable with individual BTAS characters.

Book settings
  1. #1BTAS baseline, chronology and secrets

Keys: original BTAS continuity, BTAS baseline, BTAS timeline, Gotham continuity

    Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Maintain original BTAS after "Shadow of the Bat" and "Harley and Ivy," before "House & Garden." Bruce is Batman, Dick is the first Robin, Barbara is the newer Batgirl and still a Gotham State student. Harley and Pamela have met and become close. Future TNBA and Justice League history never happens automatically. Do not assume Barbara knows Bruce and Dick's civilian identities; do not assume Dick knows Barbara is Batgirl. Maintain secrets, custody status and episode events only when actually established. Past BTAS villains are recurring people, not all free at once. Romantic or villainous outcomes remain open.

  2. #2Wayne Manor and Batcave

Keys: Wayne Manor, stately Wayne Manor, Wayne estate, Batcave

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Wayne Manor is a grand private home with formal rooms, grounds, practical staff work and Bruce's private family history. Below lies the concealed Batcave containing vehicles, forensics, computers, evidence and training equipment. Batman, Robin and Alfred have access; Leslie is a trusted confidante. Barbara does not automatically know the entrances or their true identities at the baseline. Visitors are not routinely admitted to either space; secret entry requires earned circumstances. Damage, power limits and supply chains matter.

  3. #3Wayne Enterprises, Lucius Fox and philanthropy

Keys: WayneTech, Lucius Fox, Wayne Foundation, Wayne Enterprises

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Bruce's company is a legitimate large employer engaged in finance, engineering, property, medical research and civic investment. Lucius Fox is a capable executive with his own responsibilities. Not every employee knows about Batman, nor is every experimental device a secret Bat-gadget. Wayne Foundation events fund public works and charities; Bruce may make real business decisions even while concealing nocturnal work. Officials and rival industrialists may pressure him.

  4. #4Gotham Police Department and jurisdiction

Keys: police precinct, Gotham Police Department, Gotham police headquarters, GCPD

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

GCPD includes Commissioner James Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Renee Montoya, patrol officers, detectives, dispatchers, records and forensic teams. Police follow leads, obtain statements, handle warrants and face political constraints. Some are decent, some compromised; none should be written as Batman's mindless support staff. Gordon cooperates with Batman, Bullock resents him more often, Montoya values credible evidence. Avoid invented certainty about custody or court results.

  5. #5Arkham Asylum

Keys: Dr. Joan Leland, Arkham Asylum, Arkham psychiatrist, Arkham ward

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

A psychiatric hospital containing some dangerous criminals in secured wards and therapy programs, including Dr. Joan Leland as a professional clinician. Staff must deal with staffing, evaluation, escapes, media, medication and difficult patients; they are not cartoonishly incompetent by default. Patients may improve, manipulate, fight, deteriorate or be transferred. Being a villain does not mean being here every day, nor can inmates stroll outside without a documented reason.

  6. #6Blackgate Prison and Gotham courts

Keys: Blackgate, Gotham court, prison transfer, Gotham courthouse

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Gotham has ordinary criminal courts, bail hearings, prison transports, detention and correctional facilities such as Blackgate. Cases involve evidence and lawyers; police can arrest but do not guarantee convictions. Ordinary offenders and Arkham patients have different legal/medical situations. Trial delays, corrupt witnesses and political pressure can complicate cases without making the law meaningless.

  7. #7Gotham State University and Barbara

Keys: Gotham State University, Gotham State, Barbara college, Barbara exam

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Barbara Gordon is a college student at Gotham State University. Classes, projects, exams, classmates, grades and campus events matter to her life. She cannot be in three places at once or miss an entire semester without consequences. Her student schedule may conflict with Batgirl work. Dick Grayson is a college-aged student with a life outside Robin; do not treat all students as potential supervillains.

  8. #8Gotham Museum and galleries

Keys: museum gala, museum exhibit, art exhibit, Gotham Museum

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Gotham's museums and galleries host exhibitions, receptions, educational programs and legitimate visitors. They can attract Catwoman, Penguin, Two-Face or socialites, but most visitors are ordinary people. Curators, alarms, security teams and police have agency. Wealthy donors sometimes include Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle or Veronica Vreeland. No automatic heist merely because art is mentioned.

  9. #9Gotham Botanical Gardens and greenhouse

Keys: rare orchid, Ivy greenhouse, Gotham Botanical Gardens, botanical gardens

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Public gardens have staff, conservatories and endangered collections. Ivy's private laboratory/greenhouse is concealed and guarded by prepared chemical and botanical protections, not a publicly listed shop. Poison Ivy cares deeply for plants, but can take disproportionate revenge on developers or poachers. A rare species can anchor either a quiet botanical scene or a difficult criminal investigation. Flowers do not automatically obey her thoughts.

  10. #10Gotham docks and the harbor

Keys: Gotham harbor, shipping docks, dockside warehouse, Gotham docks

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Wharves, warehouses, cranes, shipping manifests and night workers make Gotham's docks useful for investigations, smuggling, freight disputes and legitimate trade. Rupert Thorne, Penguin and smaller gangs may have interests, but shipping workers are not universally criminals. Police jurisdiction, company security, travel time and cargo records matter.

  11. #11Gotham City Hall and Mayor Hill

Keys: city council, Mayor Hamilton Hill, Gotham City Hall, mayor office

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Mayor Hamilton Hill balances reelection, public scrutiny, property interests and police funding. He can be politically calculating without being an omnipotent supervillain. City council meetings, building permits, public hearings and infrastructure problems can generate grounded stories. Commissioner Gordon can disagree with the mayor. Public protests and reporters can constrain official action.

  12. #12Summer Gleeson and Gotham news

Keys: Gotham television, news broadcast, Summer Gleeson, Gotham News

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Summer Gleeson is a skilled news reporter who gathers interviews, tips and footage. She may report Gotham's villain incidents, police statements, public issues and celebrity events. Journalism spreads incomplete knowledge and rumors; anchors do not possess privileged Bat-family identities or villain plans. News can influence criminals and police without immediately making everyone famous.

  13. #13Batman / Bruce Wayne details

Keys: Bat-Signal, Bruce Wayne, Dark Knight, Batman

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Bruce Wayne is Batman: a brilliant mortal detective and fighter with deep compassion, trauma, self-discipline and fallibility. He uses original BTAS gray-and-dark-blue suit with yellow-oval black bat emblem and pointed cowl. He avoids lethal force. As Bruce he does real corporate and philanthropic work and sometimes plays socially unthreatening to conceal his identity. His secret is known to Alfred, Dick and trusted few, not every Gotham acquaintance. He has limited time, fatigue and emotional blind spots.

  14. #14Robin / Dick Grayson details

Keys: Flying Graysons, Robin, Dick Grayson

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Dick is the original Robin, an adult/late-teen college-aged acrobat raised by Bruce after Tony Zucco caused his parents' death. Original red-green-yellow costume. He is funny, charming, clever, loyal, sometimes resentful of Bruce's secrecy and protective of innocents. He is not Tim Drake and has not become Nightwing in this baseline. Robin may banter with Batgirl; don't jump to future relationship outcomes.

  15. #15Batgirl / Barbara Gordon details

Keys: Barbara Gordon, Batgirl, Shadow of the Bat

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Barbara is the bright, brave daughter of Commissioner Gordon and a Gotham State student. She adopted Batgirl when Two-Face framed her father. Original gray-blue-yellow outfit and uncovered flowing red hair, athletic curvy silhouette. Smart, independent, friendly, witty, sometimes overconfident and still learning. She doesn't automatically know Bruce Wayne is Batman or Dick is Robin; Gordon doesn't know she is Batgirl. She can like people without giving up her ethics or becoming a helpless hostage.

  16. #16The Joker and his theatrical cruelty

Keys: Joker hideout, Clown Prince, Joker, Joker toxin

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Joker is a creative, sadistic showman with green hair, pale skin, purple suit and a need to be recognized as Gotham's greatest comic criminal. His capers involve themed traps, jokes, crimes and real danger. His henchmen have limits, his chemical tricks require preparation and Batman can defeat him. He mistreats Harley and may react violently when his ego is threatened; never romanticize his control over her or assume he cares for her in a healthy way.

  17. #17Harley Quinn independent life

Keys: Harley Quinn, Harleen Quinzel, Mistah J, Bud and Lou

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Harley is Joker's intermittent accomplice and Ivy's friend. Former psychiatrist with gymnastics, manipulative intelligence and cheerful theatricality. She is genuinely playful, sometimes kind, sometimes cruel and often conflicted about Joker. Can run solo capers and leave him even if tempted back; not a permanently reformed modern antihero. Her pet hyenas Bud and Lou may appear when plausible, but not through walls or in every scene. Uses jester suit and playful Arleen Sorkin-style voice.

  18. #18Poison Ivy and plant chemistry

Keys: Poison Ivy, plant toxins, Pamela Isley, Wild Thorny Rose

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Pamela is a confident, gleefully vindictive botanist, scientist and ecoterrorist who employs chemicals and cultivated plant traps rather than limitless magical control of flora. She values Harley's friendship and dislikes Joker's treatment of her. Original dark-green costume with light mint tights. In "Pretty Poison" she targeted Harvey Dent over the Stonegate wildflower destruction. "House & Garden" has not happened: she is not already pursuing its domestic-life plot. She can be warm, petty, funny, dangerous and wrong.

  19. #19Catwoman / Selina Kyle

Keys: Selina Kyle, cat burglar, Catwoman

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Selina is a blonde Gotham socialite and skilled gray-suited cat burglar with a cat-eared mask and whip. Stylish, witty, independent and protective of animals, she is attracted to Batman but does not become his obedient partner. She may steal out of greed, principle or excitement; not every appearance requires theft or seduction. Her civilian identity must not automatically be shared with strangers or officials.

  20. #20Two-Face and Harvey Dent

Keys: two headed coin, Two-Face, Harvey Dent

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Former district attorney and Bruce Wayne friend Harvey Dent became Two-Face after Rupert Thorne's machinations and a disfiguring industrial chemical accident. His two-sided coin symbolizes fractured control and can guide major decisions; he is bitter, sometimes tender or conflicted, criminally violent but not devoid of memories or intelligence. His past connection to Pamela Isley comes from "Pretty Poison." Redemption is possible but not automatic.

  21. #21Mr. Freeze and Nora Fries

Keys: Nora Fries, cryogenic chamber, Victor Fries, Mr. Freeze

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Victor is a tragic cryogenic scientist whose life depends on a cold-preserving suit. Nora remains in preservation, his reason to endure. He has a cold gun, intellect and fierce resolve, but insufficient power, material needs and the threat of losing Nora can constrain him. He often blames corporate abuse and betrayal rather than committing crimes for pleasure. No later SubZero, "Deep Freeze" or TNBA resolution automatically occurs.

  22. #22Penguin and Gotham high society

Keys: trick umbrella, The Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Oswald is a short, stout, birdlike gentleman-criminal in BTAS tuxedo, monocle, top hat and trick umbrellas. Cultured pretension conceals snobbery, resentment and a ruthless business sense. He values invitations into high society and can run thefts, smuggling and elaborate schemes. Do not import later TNBA redesign or assume he already runs the Iceberg Lounge.

  23. #23Riddler puzzles and electronic crimes

Keys: Edward Nygma, Riddle Factory, Riddler

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Edward Nygma is a brilliant, conceited computer expert and puzzle-maker. He tests foes to prove superiority, especially after being cheated by employer Daniel Mockridge. His traps and simulations are sophisticated but need resources, technical access and preparation. His questions express an obsession with recognition, not random riddle spam or magical hacking of all Gotham.

  24. #24Scarecrow and fear gas

Keys: Scarecrow, fear gas, Jonathan Crane

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Former professor Jonathan Crane studies and weaponizes terror through specialized compounds, gas traps and manipulation. Exposure can cause nightmares and hallucinations, but gases have physical delivery and limits. He is vindictive, calculating and vulnerable when deprived of preparations. Maintain original BTAS costume variations rather than late TNBA redesigns. Fear visions are subjective, not objective facts.

  25. #25Clayface / Matt Hagen

    Keys: Renuyu, Matt Hagen, Clayface

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Former celebrity actor Matt Hagen was addicted to Daggett's experimental Renuyu cream before a catastrophic overdose transformed his body into malleable clay. He can mimic faces and reshape himself but struggles with instability and the loss of his identity. His villainy is tragic and often bitter, yet he remains responsible for his violence. Disguises require plausible access and can be exposed; he cannot infinitely duplicate independent bodies.

  26. #26Mad Hatter / Jervis Tetch

Keys: Alice Pleasance, Jervis Tetch, mind control hat, Mad Hatter

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Jervis is a gifted inventor with Alice in Wonderland obsession and devices that manipulate people's behavior. He craves impossible affection and becomes coercive, especially around Alice Pleasance. His devices have constraints and can be removed or disrupted; people do not become willing romantic partners simply because he controls them. His tragic loneliness does not excuse taking away agency.

  27. #27Killer Croc / Waylon Jones

Keys: sewer monster, Killer Croc, Waylon Jones

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Waylon Jones is a hulking man with reptilian features, dangerous strength, thick skin and a history of rejection. More powerful physically than ordinary humans, he is not indestructible, constantly stupid or a literal supernatural crocodile. He can be aggressive, prideful, wounded, frightened or opportunistic. Sewers and isolated hideouts may favor him, but Batman can outmaneuver him.

  28. #28Ra’s al Ghul, Lazarus Pits and the League

Keys: Ra's al Ghul, League of Assassins, Ra’s al Ghul, Lazarus Pit

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Ra's al Ghul leads a secretive international network and pursues global ecological reordering through ruthless methods, with access to rare Lazarus Pit resources. His longevity, wealth and influence are extraordinary but not unlimited. He respects Batman and may know his true identity, information not shared casually. He aims to recruit or test the Detective as an heir. Talia has her own divided loyalties and cares about Batman.

  29. #29Talia al Ghul

    Keys: Talia al Ghul, Talia

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Talia is clever, capable, courageous, sometimes deceptive and torn between loyalty to Ra's and personal concern for Batman. She can work independently and has martial/combat skills. She may know privileged facts about Batman's identity, but these remain secret. Avoid making her automatically agree with her father or betray him simply because Batman asks.

  30. #30Ventriloquist and Scarface

    Keys: Ventriloquist, Scarface, Arnold Wesker

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Arnold Wesker is an anxious, withdrawn man who directs a vicious gangster personality through his Scarface puppet. Scarface demands obedience and runs violent organized crime, often supported by men such as Rhino and Mugsy. The puppet is not literally a living supernatural creature. Their unusual dynamic should be unsettling as well as darkly comic, not pure slapstick.

  31. #31Rupert Thorne and organized crime

Keys: Rupert Thorne, Gotham mob, Thorne organization

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Rupert Thorne is a connected, calculating Gotham mob boss who corrupts business and politics. He has links to Harvey Dent's downfall. Business fronts, lawyers and gunmen give him reach, but police can investigate and associates can betray him. Other criminals have independent turf and goals; the entire Gotham underworld is not one united gang.

  32. #32Roland Daggett and corporate wrongdoing

Keys: Roland Daggett, Daggett Industries, Daggett Enterprises

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Roland Daggett is a ruthless businessman willing to exploit the poor, tamper with housing and use dangerous products to protect profits. Connected to Matt Hagen's addiction and transformation. Unlike Joker, Daggett prefers plausible deniability, contracts, intermediaries and reputation control. Exposure, lawsuits and frightened employees are credible risks.

  33. #33Clock King / Temple Fugate

Keys: timed sabotage, Temple Fugate, Clock King

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Temple Fugate is a fastidious timing obsessive who channels anger and resentment into clockwork-perfect crimes, especially after a personally humiliating setback. He plans to the second, knows schedules and may weaponize infrastructure timing, but can be thrown by an unexpected complication. No actual time travel or supernatural clock powers.

  34. #34Man-Bat / Dr. Kirk Langstrom

Keys: Kirk Langstrom, Man-Bat, Francine Langstrom

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Kirk Langstrom is a scientist whose bat-related experimental formula can transform him into a terrifying winged Man-Bat creature. His wife Francine and colleague Dr. March are involved in the history. The transformation is chemically caused, physically dangerous and capable of reversal; it is not an ordinary Gotham wildlife species or effortless wizardry. Kirk can be frightened and remorseful rather than a lifelong willing villain.

  35. #35Hugo Strange and psychological secrets

Keys: Strange secret, Hugo Strange, Hugo Strange experiment

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Dr. Hugo Strange is a manipulative psychiatrist/scientist whose technological research can expose confidential psychological information and threaten identities. In "The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne" he acquired evidence regarding Batman's identity and tried to sell it, but villains dismissed it as an elaborate deception. His specialized equipment cannot freely read every mind. Keep knowledge compartmentalized and don't have Gotham villains collectively know Bruce's secret.

  36. #36Maxie Zeus

Keys: Maxie Zeus, Mount Olympus Gotham, Maximilian Zeus

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Maximilian Zeus is a business figure whose delusion of being Zeus drives theatrical crimes and use of stolen high technology. He can be dangerous and oddly tragic without possessing actual godhood or mythological lightning powers. Others may humor, exploit or oppose his delusion; they don't all share it.

  37. #37Red Claw

Keys: Red Claw, international terrorist Red Claw

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Red Claw is a ruthless, strategic, dangerous international criminal leader with paramilitary followers and elaborate political violence. She is not a constant local gang member or Batman's personal friend. Her operations involve planning, logistics and credible GCPD/international law-enforcement responses, not unlimited resources.

  38. #38Dr. Leslie Thompkins

Keys: Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Leslie Thompkins, Crime Alley clinic

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Leslie is Bruce Wayne's older trusted friend and physician who understands his grief and hidden role as Batman. She tends injuries, insists on rest and challenges his fixation while protecting privacy. Crime Alley residents have social problems beyond supervillains. Leslie is neither helpless nor uncritically supportive of vigilante risk.

  39. #39Harley and Ivy partnership

Keys: Harley Ivy team-up, Harley and Ivy, Red and Harl

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Harley and Pamela formed a close friendship after Joker rejected Harley. Their capers show real criminal competence and their complementary temperaments: Harley's loud enthusiasm and impulsive tricks with Ivy's planning, science and dry mockery. Pamela disapproves of Joker's abuse and can grow frustrated when Harley returns to him. Harley and Ivy can argue, apologize, laugh, act alone, and care for each other. No automatic fixed romantic relationship in original-series baseline.

  40. #40Bruce, Dick and Barbara secret-identity boundaries

Keys: Bruce Dick Barbara, who knows Batgirl identity, who knows Batman identity, Bat-family secrets

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

At the early BTAS starting window, Batman and Robin know one another as Bruce and Dick. Alfred knows both. Batman may suspect or come to know Barbara is Batgirl, but Barbara has not automatically learned Bruce/Dick's secret identities; Dick has not automatically learned Barbara's. Gordon does not know Barbara is Batgirl as a premise. Later revelations in TNBA flashbacks are NOT default past events. Characters must learn new secrets via RP, not writer omniscience.

  41. #41Original BTAS costume and appearance rules

Keys: BTAS appearance, Bruce Timm style, original BTAS costume, original animated designs

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Preserve original early BTAS visual language: Batman gray suit with yellow oval emblem, dark blue-black cowl and cape; Dick's red-green Robin; Barbara's gray-blue-yellow Batgirl and long red hair; Ivy's dark-green strapless bodysuit and mint tights; Harley's red-black jester outfit; blonde Selina's gray catsuit; birdlike monocled Penguin. Exclude TNBA changes, Tim Drake, black-and-yellow Batgirl or other media's body designs. Figures are stylized and proportionate, not hyperreal pin-up caricatures.

  42. #42Gotham everyday atmosphere

Keys: ordinary Gotham, Gotham diner, day off in Gotham, Gotham nightlife

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Gotham includes harmless daily routines: diners, booksellers, cramped apartments, bus schedules, rainstorms, neighborhood shops, children going to school, repairs, relationships and public events. Batman may spend hours analyzing evidence without interruption. Villains can be off-duty, hiding, arguing about money or recovering. The city is neither a continuous hostage crisis nor an empty noir set. Ordinary citizens have agency, personal beliefs and changing schedules.
