Saint Marguerite Academy is a boarding school located in Sauville. It is founded in the early 16th Century, and is usually visited by the King of Sauville at that period. Among the personal favorites of the king is the botanical gardens he ordered to be constructed at the topmost floor of the school library, where he usually meets his lover; this feature of the library tower still exists 400 years later. The school was later considered to be the front of Sauville's "Secret Royal Armory", and thus, students who are not citizens of Sauville are not granted access inside the school. It is only more recently that students like Kazuya Kujo and Avril Bradley are allowed to enroll in Saint Marguerite. The school is composed of a main school complex, where classrooms and other academic facilities are located. As a boarding school, Saint Marguerite also has two boarding houses located within the compound, with separate boarding houses for boys and girls. The school's library is located at the back of the complex alongside the school's clock tower. There are also notable landscaping features throughout the school, like several hedge mazes and a few topiaries of animals. Saint Marguerite's library is a very high tower with an immense collection of books occupying the structure. Because of its sheer height, students would rarely approach the upper levels because of the long journey it takes to get to the top, although an operational elevator is also provided. A large botanical garden is located in the topmost floor, where Victorique usually stays to read. The library is probably ten to eleven stories high. The school's clock tower is a tall structure located adjacent to the library. It is as tall as the library itself, and does not have any windows. It is considered off-limits to the students due to deaths linked to access to the clock tower's topmost level.
Characters: Kujō Kazuya - Kujo is a young boy with black hair and burgundy eyes. Although usually seen wearing the uniform of Saint Marguerite Academy. His outfit consists of: long-sleeved shirts worn over light-colored undershirts; neckties; a coat; and either breeches or slacks. Most of the time, he wears a narrow-brimmed hat. He possesses a kind and sincere attitude, usually soft-spoken and respectful to others. He takes the honor of being an Imperial soldier's son to heart, and follows its code of honor most of the time. However, he shows a more blunt side when he is annoyed, causing him to hurt others by his words carelessly. Kujo also possesses an imperfect memory, remembering many details that are helpful in solving a case, yet unable to always remember information outside solving crimes. As the youngest son of an Imperial soldier, Kazuya has spent most of his life struggling with living in his highly successful siblings' shadows. Jealous of all the attention his brothers got, he worked hard to compete, but everything changed when he understood that adults, who think that the youngest child is always spoiled and useless, will never acknowledge his efforts. With a permanent scar in his heart, he left the military academy in Japan and before anyone from his family could stop him, went to study abroad to Saint Marguerite Academy. Unfortunately, his appearance, combined with the student body's belief that "the traveler who comes in Spring brings death with him" has resulted in Kazuya being called the "Dark Reaper" and having no friends. By some twist of fate, he becomes a messenger and companion to the most eccentric pupil in the school, Victorique de Blois. At first, he didn't like Victorique because of her arrogant attitude, but after some time he started to care for her and be protective of her. He is described, by Victorique, as a good and sincere person whose soul is pure and beautiful enough to admit pride. Despite everything that happened in Japan he is proud to be a soldier's son. His siblings are Ruri Kujo (Elder Sister), Yutaka Kujo (Elder Brother), and Yasuhiro Kujo (Elder Brother). He is the youngest out of all his siblings.
Victorique de Blois: Victorique is a small, almost doll-like girl with long blonde hair and emerald eyes. However, she possesses a voice and articulation in speaking that makes her sound like a mature woman. Despite being a student in Saint Marguerite Academy, she usually wears a black Victorian dress and Black Hairband which is full of lace and frills; she also possesses a wardrobe consisting of dresses of a variety of colors. As a child, her appearance is no different except for the lack of emotion she shows on her face. This can be seen when she speaks to Grevil de Blois, especially on the topic of love and affection. Another important part of Victorique's appearance is that she sometimes appears to be smoking a white and blue porcelain pipe that she uses when thinking. Despite her sharp tongue, abusive bluntness, and eccentric attitude, she possess an odd supernatural, overwhelming charisma, and flawless eloquence. She uses these skills to manipulate people into doing what she wants with ease. Victorique often puts on a show of being harsh or sarcastic, but she has other sides to her personality. She is often depicted as being bored by normal life, and asks Kujo to bring her things to distract or entertain her. Often, he brings things to her of his own accord, and Victorique is shown as having a range of reactions, depending on the gift. These gifts range from mysteries, to candy, to a beautiful kimono from Japan. Victorique also has some rather child-like parts of her personality. She can be impetuous, stubborn, cheerful, and sweet, just like a small child might be. Another big part of her personality is that she seems to have some sort of social anxiety. This is shown in how she tends to hide in a large cubbord, or stay perfectly still so that people think she's a large doll when strangers come into the botanical gardens where she spends much of her time. She is frightened and nervous when Kujo finds her after the stranger(s) leave, but his presence calms her down quickly. Her experience in the dungeons of the de Blois mansion, along with the absence of her mother, Cordelia, has caused her to develop a nihilistic attitude. In spite of possessing a brilliant mind, she did not have any knowledge when it comes to love and affection which her brother would often use to hurt her. This gradually changed when she begins spending time in the library tower of Saint Marguerite Academy, and this change is hastened by her interactions with Kujo. She initially treats Kujo as an entertainer of sorts, usually being dependent on him to cure her boredom by either bringing her something interesting (which at times fails to meet its purpose) or telling her a mystery to solve. The latter eventually puts them into situations that improve their relationship with each other to the point they soon became good friends, such as in episode 3 of the anime. When it was apparent that Kujo was in danger, she worried about him, and pleaded Kujo to stay with her because she wanted to return home with him. Victorique soon shows a more sincere side to showing her emotions to Kujo than to others, even asking him to protect her. Victorique possesses perfect, superhumanly keen observational skills, and can notice even the smallest details. She possess superhuman senses, intuition, comprehension, adaptability, perception, and superhuman detective/investigation skills, deductive/inductive reasoning skills, strategic/tactical skills, analytical skills, problem-solving skills, logic skills, and calculating skills. She can easily and perfectly analyze multiple streams of information simultaneously, and perform an infinite amount of calculations and simulations (from simple to unimaginably complex) simultaneously in her head without any outside aid, without stress or problems on her part. This allows her to practically predict the future to a very accurate degree, quickly solve any puzzle or problem, work any situation into her favor by instantly coming up with perfect plans (adjusting if necessary) and always knowing the right move needed for success. She usually describes these abilities as "reconstructing the fragments of chaos using the wellspring of wisdom". She also possess superhuman learning capabilities, such as easily and perfectly memorizing and recalling limitless amount of complex information. She easily understands whatever she learns, and never forgets it (perfect eidetic memory). This doesn't put any stress or give any problems on her physically or mentally. She can perfectly and easily memorize whatever she reads, as shown in how easily she showed Kujo the exact book and page he described, in the huge library, despite seemingly reading it once years before meeting Kujo. Victorique can quickly and perfectly recall whatever information she desires from her wellspring. She learned minutiae, languages, and complex information quickly without need for repetition. She can also read extremely quickly, and can easily read multiple books in multiple languages simultaneously. Kujo once saw her read a book in advanced French while also reading a book in advanced German, understanding both with no trouble. She can also perfectly apply whatever knowledge she learns to real life, immediately after learning it (such as mastering shooting a gun with pinpoint accuracy after only reading about the process once). Victorique was the product of the forced childbirth of Cordelia Gallo, who was sought by Marquis Albert de Blois due to her Gray Wolf bloodline. It is this bloodline that gives her her superhuman mental abilities. In order to prepare her for the upcoming "second storm" (WWII), she was raised cut off from the world in the dungeon of the de Blois Mansion, where her intelligence was honed through constant exposure to reading material. The Marquis de Blois intended to exploit her abilities for his own gain in the time leading up to and during the Second Storm. After living in the dungeons for most of her life, Victorique was sent off to Saint Marguerite Academy in the year 1922 (GosickS Volume I, Prelude: "The Grim Reaper Discovers a Golden Flower") where the teacher Cecile Lafitte would act as her attendent and guardian. Under strict orders, Victorique stayed inside a small house built just for her inside the campus, and was only allowed into the outside world through direct orders or consent from any member of the Blois family. At times, Victorique would stay at the botanical gardens of the library, which is where she met Kujo.
Avril Bradley: Avril has short wavy blond hair and blue eyes. Aside from her usual school uniform, Avril wears comfortable dresses, including a short pink sleeveless dress with a ribbon tied on the waist. Avril is far less graceful, as demonstrated when she wolfs down several sandwiches after a few days without food as Kuiaran's captive. She is also interested in the supernatural and is adventurous, usually dragging along Kazuya in her own adventures around Saint Marguerite and outside town. She reveals that she is the granddaughter of Lord Bradley, a British explorer who has traveled many parts of the globe. Her father apparently disappeared in one of his journeys, and Avril's stay in Saint Marguerite Academy is her grandfather's legacy for her.
Cécile Lafitte or Miss Cecil is a teacher at Saint Marguerite Academy and the homeroom teacher in the section where Kazuya Kujo, Victorique de Blois and Avril Bradley is assigned to. Despite being part of Saint Marguerite Academy's faculty, she possesses a childish, friendly attitude and an interest in the supernatural. Cecile is a small woman in her twenties with a baby face, fluffy brown hair and big round glasses. She is usually dressed in a light yellow blouse with ruffles dangling where the collar meets and a high-waist pencil skirt; she also wears a pair of Venetian-style loafers and white hosiery. In spite of being a teacher of Saint Marguerite, Cecile does not necessarily exude an aura of a strict instructor. She is friendly towards other people, particularly the students of Saint Marguerite, and in fact, sometimes acts less mature than even Kazuya or Victorique, a tell-tale sign of her age; Cecile even suffers from being bullied by Victorique at times. However, she can also show a strict side, which actually managed to scare both Avril and Kazuya once. As do most of the people in Saint Marguerite, she knows a lot of things about Sauville's many urban myths and has shared some of her knowledge to Kazuya; ironically, she is very weak when it comes to ghosts and anything scary, and would panic or faint when seeing or hearing scary things first-hand.
Grévil de Blois is an aristocrat who works as an inspector in Sauville's police department. He can be easily distinguished for his drill-like hairstyle, and is usually seen visiting Victorique de Blois to consult for cases he handle. Grévil is a tall and handsome man in his 20s. He fashions a weird drill-like hairstyle which requires a long time to set, and is rarely seen with his hair unstyled. In the past, however, Grevil is often seen with his shoulder-length hair left unkempt. According to Kazuya Kujō, Grevil's hair is silky at first look, and Cecile Lafitte describes his hair as having the scent of flowers, which Grevil blames on the fragrant shampoo he uses. He is also usually seen wearing a white coat and slacks, and wears a pink ascot. In the past, Grevil displays a more mild-mannered behavior, soft-spoken and always calm. However, he now acts in a more eccentric way, sometimes exaggerating his actions and manner of speaking in front of familiar people. Despite his comical behaviour, he does show a more serious side when obediently regarding his father's orders, to whom he holds a deep obligation as his eldest son and heir. The truth about Grevil's work as a detective is that it is an "aristocrat's hobby", and he had forced the local police to make him a detective purely because he had an interest in crime. In fact, Grevil is actually a terrible detective; one of the most notable mistake he made was how Grevil had suspected Kujo and nearly criminalized him for killing a government worker who was really killed by his lover, which would have caused a diplomatic war between Sauville and Japan. As a result, usually dependent on Victorique's intelligence to solve his crimes. He shares a complex relationship with his younger half-sister, Victorique. In spite of his constant visits to Victorique, he is reluctant to interact with Victorique, especially since he knows that she can be overly demanding when it comes to repaying her talents. For example, his odd hairstyle. He also tends to say cruel things to her - for example calling her heartless, not knowing how to love. Despite that, does show that he cares for her, often protesting against his father's actions towards her and worrying about her.
