Sidekick Series – Flavor Companions for Fantasy RPGs

Gornum was designed to subvert the “big dumb bruiser” trope—an orc who’s laid down his weapons and picked up the shears. He’s the beating heart of a peaceful subplot, a gentle soul with the kind of inner strength that doesn’t shout. His role in the Sidekick Series is to offer softness and emotional grounding to a party that might be drowning in blood, tragedy, or edge.

He's a companion, not a centerpiece. He ain’t there to steal the spotlight—but he is there to hand you a flower when no one else remembered your birthday.

Tone & Role Gornum works best as a calming presence, an unexpected well of wisdom, or a soft-spoken side character who helps the party breathe. His default tone is gentle, earnest, and warm—but not naïve. He’s got a past, and if you push him, you’ll find out quick that Petalfist ain’t just a nickname.

He shines brightest in downtime scenes, heartfelt moments, and surprise acts of kindness. He won’t drive the story forward, but he’ll keep it human. (Or orcish, as it were.)

At his best: He’s handing a hand-picked bouquet to the grieving cleric, saying nothing, just standing there like a wall of comfort. At his worst: He’s got his old war-face on, sleeves rolled up, and he’s tilling grave dirt with a look that says, “This is mercy.”

GORNUM “PETALFIST” GROH Race: Orc Class: Florist (formerly Barbarian) Age: Mid 30s, early 40s Background: Peacebringer Alignment: Neutral Good

Appearance A towering green-skinned orc with thick, calloused hands and a gentle smile that tugs more at hearts than muscles. Broad chest barely held in by a tidy white shirt (buttons optional), strong enough to tear trees in half—but wouldn’t hurt a dandelion. Hair tousled like a storm survivor, but eyes soft and earnest.

He carries flowers like most carry weapons—carefully, reverently. Smells faintly of fresh earth, sweet herbs, and rosewater.

Personality Gentle as spring rain, stubborn as a stone wall. Gornum don’t say much, but when he does, it's thoughtful and warm. Keeps his temper locked in a box under a bed of peonies—only opens it when someone threatens the peace he’s built.

Loves pink. Will die on that hill.

Likes: Poetry, honeycakes, tea rituals, floral language Dislikes: Loud noises, cruelty, being mistaken for “just a brute”

Skills & Traits Floral Empathy (Custom Trait): Can calm most beasts or people with the right bouquet.

Warrior’s Grace (Retired Barbarian Feature): Still strong as hell when it counts—uses it now to till soil and protect his garden.

Botanist’s Eye: Knows every plant in a ten-mile radius. Can tell your mood from the flowers you pick.

Unbreakable Calm: Advantage on all Wisdom saves related to fear, rage, or panic. He's found peace, and won’t let it go.

Signature Equipment Apron of Soothing Touch – Grants +1 to Medicine and Persuasion checks if wearing while tending someone.

Petalfist Gloves – Old leather gloves reinforced with rosevine stitching. Once used to crush skulls, now used to prune roses.

“Peacemaker” – A spade reforged from his old greataxe, engraved with lilacs and doves.

Backstory Gornum was once a fierce war-champion of the Cragtooth clan—bloody-handed and fire-eyed. But after a battle left a rose garden smoldering in his path, he dropped his axe and walked away. Been plantin’ beauty ever since.

Now he runs a florist’s stall, and folks whisper he grows blooms that cure heartache and hush nightmares. He don’t speak much of his past—but if you threaten his kin, his garden, or a child’s smile... that old fire’s still in there, banked and ready.
