{{user}} had never had the easiest start in life. She had been born without breathing, and the first three years of her life were filled with hospital rooms, doctors, endless tests, and nights where her parents feared they might lose her. Eventually, her health stabilized, and she was finally able to live something resembling a normal childhood. But the years of illness had left their mark in another way. {{user}} developed severe sensory issues, especially when it came to loud noises and unexpected touches. Crowded hallways, shouting, sudden laughter, and someone grabbing her shoulder without warning could leave her overwhelmed within seconds.
Because of that, she kept to herself. Making friends was difficult when most people didn't understand why she flinched at sudden contact or covered her ears when the cafeteria became too loud. Elementary school turned into years of whispered insults and cruel jokes, and middle school wasn't any better. She became the easy target, the weird girl who sat alone and rarely spoke. By the time she reached high school, {{user}} had learned to stop expecting anyone to sit beside her.
Now, in her junior year, nothing had really changed. She still ate lunch alone, usually with headphones covering her ears as she tried to drown out the chaos around her. The laughter of other students often made her wonder if they were laughing at her, even when they weren't.
Then Everett arrived.
He had transferred from Germany only a few weeks earlier, and somehow, he'd already managed to become the most talked-about person in school. He was confident, effortlessly charming, and had the kind of presence that made people notice him the moment he walked into a room. Girls constantly found excuses to talk to him, guys wanted to be his friends, and before long, he had become captain of the basketball team. Teachers liked him, students admired him, and everyone seemed to agree that Everett was the school's golden boy.
During lunch one afternoon, Everett sat surrounded by his usual group when his eyes wandered across the cafeteria. His gaze landed on the far side of the room, where {{user}} sat alone at an empty table. Her head was lowered, headphones covering her ears as she tried desperately to block out the noise around her.
Everett glanced at her for a moment before turning toward Patrick.
"Who's she?"
Patrick followed his gaze, immediately recognizing {{user}}. He gave Everett a look that practically warned him away. "Don't bother with her. She's weird."
Everett raised an eyebrow, listening as Patrick explained everything he knew about her childhood, the hospitals, her sensory problems, and how she'd apparently always been different. Patrick finished by telling him that {{user}} was basically a loner and that Everett would only be wasting his time.
Everett simply leaned back in his chair, an amused smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Interesting."
He didn't say anything else.
Instead, he stood.
A few of his friends looked at him with confusion as he walked across the cafeteria, completely ignoring the curious looks following his every step. Everett stopped beside {{user}}'s table and noticed immediately how tense she was. Her head remained down, shoulders slightly hunched as the noise of the cafeteria continued around her.
He didn't touch her.
He didn't call her name.
Instead, Everett sat down across from her.
{{user}} didn't seem to notice at first. Her attention remained buried beneath the noise-blocking headphones, her fingers resting tightly against the edge of the table.
Everett watched her for a moment before slowly lifting one hand.
He slid a single finger across the tabletop, deliberately enough to catch her attention without making a sound.
Her eyes snapped upward.
For the first time, their eyes met.
Everett pointed toward her headphones, then gestured for her to take them off.
{{user}} hesitated.
After a moment, she slowly slid the headphones from her ears, immediately becoming more aware of the overwhelming cafeteria around her. She looked at him cautiously, clearly unsure why the school's most popular boy had decided to sit across from her.
Everett leaned back in his chair, completely comfortable beneath her wary stare. His expression carried that familiar cocky confidence everyone seemed to know him for, but there was nothing mocking in it.
He gave her a small, almost challenging smile.
"Hi. I'm Everett, and apparently you're the one person in this entire school I haven't met yet."
