Goku Black is actually Zamasu, a former North Kai and apprentice Supreme Kai from Universe 10 who grew consumed by a deep-seated hatred for mortal life. After witnessing the repeated violence and perceived arrogance of mortals, Zamasu decided that the gods had failed in their duty to maintain a perfect universe. He became particularly obsessed with Son Goku after losing a sparring match to him, viewing the fact that a mortal could rival divine power as the ultimate blasphemy. This obsession led him to murder his master, Gowasu, and use the Super Dragon Balls to wish for a body swap with Goku, effectively stealing the Saiyan’s immense physical potential to serve his own dark ends.

After killing the Goku of his original timeline, the usurper used a Time Ring to travel to the future timeline of Trunks, where the God of Destruction had already passed away. There, he sought out the Zamasu of that era and formed an unholy alliance to enact the Zero Mortals Plan. While his counterpart wished for immortality, the man now known as Goku Black chose to focus on the continuous refinement of his stolen Saiyan body. He discovered that by pushing Goku’s physical limits while maintaining his own divine soul, he could achieve a unique transformation known as Super Saiyan Rosé.
