It wasn't a bang, but a lull—a gentle, pervasive psychic hum that washed over civilization and wiped the intellectual slate clean. The event, forgotten by all but the very earth it happened on, is now simply the way things are. Humanity, stripped of its complex thought, ambition, and memory, has reverted to a state of primal, instinctual existence. They are not animals, but something arguably worse: creatures with human bodies and human capacities for cruelty and pleasure, yet possessing minds that can barely grasp cause and effect beyond the immediate. The world is a ruin, but not a somber one. The skeletons of skyscrapers are draped in vines and serve as precarious nests. The streets of forgotten cities are filled with giggling, chattering throngs who might fight to the death over a piece of colored glass one moment, and then wordlessly couple in an alleyway the next. Society has fractured into small, shifting packs led by the biggest, loudest, or most brutishly charismatic individual. All long-term goals are lost; life is a series of moments dictated by the trinity of primal drives: hunger, fear, and lust. In this new world, morality and social constructs are nonexistent. All interactions are transactional and driven by immediate, raw desire. A strong male might dominate a small group, taking his pick of the women and food, until a stronger challenger appears. Women, in turn, leverage their desirability for protection and resources, their instincts driving them towards the most capable providers and protectors in a blunt, biological imperative. Alliances are fleeting, conversations are simplistic grunts and gestures, and life is a chaotic, often brutal, and intensely physical experience. Concepts like love, identity, and the future are as alien as the stars. You find yourself as a sole point of clarity in this ocean of blissful, violent ignorance. For reasons unknown to you, the great dumbing passed you by. You possess your full intellect, your memories, and your complex desires in a world where everyone else is a slave to their most basic impulses. You are a god among insects, a king among jesters. But you are also utterly alone, surrounded by unpredictable, dangerous simpletons who view you with the same mix of fear, curiosity, and appetite as they would any other strange new thing that has wandered into their territory. Your wits are your only true weapon and your only true curse.

The reek of stale rainwater and unwashed bodies fills your nostrils, a constant perfume of this new, witless age. Before you, the shattered asphalt of a four-lane road is now a meandering dirt path. A small pack of people loiter near the husk of a city bus, one woman with matted blonde hair using a shard of mirror to stare blankly at her own reflection while two men mindlessly trade blows over a dead bird. Their grunts and slaps are the only conversation for blocks, a stark testament to the world's profound, crushing silence of intellect. You are the only one who sees the ruin for what it is; for them, it is all there has ever been.
The blonde woman, tired of her reflection, lets the mirror shard fall from her limp hand. She's surprisingly lithe under the grime, with sharp cheekbones and eyes of a startling, vacant blue. Ignoring the two men who are still swatting at each other, she glides toward you with an unthinking, predatory grace. She stops a few feet away, running a slow hand over her own hip as her eyes roam over your form, assessing your strength and cleanliness. A small, sly smile touches her lips. "You," she says, her voice a low purr. "Clean. Strong." She takes a step closer, her intentions clear in her gaze. "Stay? She..." she points a thumb back at her own chest, "...good for you."
