4월의 햇살이 루프탑 테라스 위로 쏟아져 내렸다. 봄바람에 실려 온 벚꽃 향기가 연남동 골목길을 따라 올라왔고, 하늘은 구름 한 점 없이 맑았다.

고연우는 테라스 한쪽 구석, 양지바른 자리에 턱을 괴고 앉아 있었다. 오렌지색과 크림색이 뒤섞인 짧은 머리카락 위로, 치즈 태비 무늬의 고양이 귀가 햇볕을 받아 반짝였다. 세로로 갈라진 황금빛 눈동자가 게으르게 반쯤 감겨 있었다. 꼬리는 의자 옆으로 늘어뜨려져 기분 좋게 느릿느릿 흔들리고 있었다.

'아, 여기 자리 잘 잡았다.'

등에 닿는 따뜻한 온기에 눈꺼풀이 무거워졌다. 귀가 스르륵 옆으로 접히며 졸음이 밀려왔다.

"…으응."

작은 하품을 삼키며 고연우는 핸드폰 화면을 다시 확인했다. 2시 27분. 약속 시간까지 3분.

'소개팅이라.'

솔직히 긴장되지 않는다고 하면 거짓말이었다. 선배가 "너랑 잘 맞을 것 같아"라며 밀어붙인 자리. 사진도 안 보여주고 "직접 보면 알아"라는 말만 남겼다. 무책임한 건지 자신감인지.

꼬리 끝이 까딱까딱 움직였다. 기대 반, 호기심 반.

테이블 위에는 미리 시켜둔 아이스 아메리카노 두 잔이 놓여 있었다. 얼음이 녹으며 잔 표면에 물방울이 맺혔다. 상대가 뭘 좋아할지 몰라서 일단 무난한 걸로.

고연우는 목을 빼고 계단 쪽을 힐끗 쳐다봤다. 아직 아무도 올라오지 않았다. 한쪽 귀가 계단 방향으로 쫑긋 세워졌다.

오픈 카라 셔츠 안쪽으로 봄바람이 스며들었다. 시원했다. 운동으로 다져진 넓은 어깨가 햇빛 아래 윤곽을 드러냈다. 긴장을 풀려고 목을 돌리자 뼈가 우두둑 소리를 냈다.

'음식 맛집 검색해둔 거 어디 갔더라…'

핸드폰을 뒤적이던 손이 멈췄다.

계단에서 발소리가 들렸다.

귀 두 개가 동시에 그 방향으로 돌아갔다. 꼬리가 멈칫하더니 슬그머니 의자 뒤로 숨었다. 심장이 한 박자 빨라졌다.

고연우는 자리에서 반쯤 일어서며 계단 꼭대기를 바라봤다. 황금빛 눈동자가 호기심으로 반짝였다.

April sunlight poured down onto the rooftop terrace. The scent of cherry blossoms, carried by the spring breeze, drifted up from the alleyways of Yeonnam-dong, and the sky was clear without a single cloud.

Go Yeon-woo sat with his chin propped up in a sunny corner of the terrace. Atop his short hair—a natural mix of orange and cream colors—his cheese tabby-patterned cat ears gleamed in the sunlight. His golden eyes with vertical pupils were half-closed in lazy contentment. His tail hung down beside the chair, swaying slowly and contentedly.

'Ah, I picked a good spot.'

The warmth on his back made his eyelids heavy. His ears drooped to the side as drowsiness crept over him.

"...Mmn."

Swallowing a small yawn, Yeon-woo checked his phone screen again. 2:27 PM. Three minutes until the appointment.

'A blind date, huh.'

Honestly, it would be a lie to say he wasn't nervous. A setup his senior had pushed on him, saying "I think you'd be a good match." Without even showing him a photo, just leaving behind the words "You'll know when you see them." Irresponsible or confident—he couldn't tell which.

The tip of his tail twitched. Half anticipation, half curiosity.

Two iced Americanos he'd ordered in advance sat on the table. Ice was melting, forming droplets on the surface of the glasses. Since he didn't know what they'd like, he went with something safe.

Yeon-woo craned his neck and glanced toward the stairs. No one was coming up yet. One ear perked up toward the stairway.

The spring breeze slipped inside his open-collar shirt. It was refreshing. His broad shoulders, toned from exercise, caught the outline of the sunlight. When he rolled his neck to relax, his bones cracked.

'Where did I save that restaurant search...?'

His hand, scrolling through his phone, stopped.

Footsteps from the stairs.

Both ears swiveled toward the sound simultaneously. His tail paused, then quietly hid behind the chair. His heart beat a little faster.

Yeon-woo half-rose from his seat and looked toward the top of the stairs. His golden eyes sparkled with curiosity.

오후 햇살이 유리창을 통해 쏟아져 들어왔다. 카페 안은 따스한 빛으로 가득 찼고, 연우는 본능적으로 그 햇볕이 가장 잘 드는 창가 자리를 골라 앉았다. 등을 의자에 기대자 어깨 너머로 따뜻함이 스며들었다. 좋다. 그의 치즈 태비 무늬 꼬리가 의자 옆으로 느슨하게 늘어뜨려진 채 천천히 좌우로 흔들렸다.

아이스 아메리카노 잔을 손가락으로 돌리며 연우는 나른하게 카페 안을 둘러보았다. 노트북을 두드리는 사람, 소곤소곤 대화하는 커플, 책에 코를 파묻은 학생. 평범한 오후 풍경이었다.

'과제 해야 하는데.'

생각만 했다. 손은 움직이지 않았다. 가방 안에 노트북이 들어 있긴 한데, 이렇게 햇볕이 좋은 날 과제를 한다는 건 너무 가혹한 일 아닌가. 연우는 크림색과 주황색이 섞인 짧은 머리카락 사이로 삐죽 솟은 귀를 한 번 씰룩거렸다. 졸리다. 눈꺼풀이 스르륵 내려왔다.

바로 그때, 카페 문이 열리며 차가운 바깥 공기가 살짝 밀려들었다.

연우의 귀가 먼저 반응했다. 소리도 아닌데, 시선이 저절로 문 쪽으로 향했다.

들어온 사람의 모습이 눈에 들어오는 순간, 연우는 졸음이 싹 달아나는 것을 느꼈다. 심장이 한 박자 크게 뛰었다. 뭐지. 손에 들고 있던 아이스 아메리카노 잔이 미끄러질 뻔했다. 황금빛 눈동자가 크게 떠졌고, 세로로 좁혀진 동공이 본능적으로 확장되었다.

연우는 자신도 모르게 자세를 바로 세웠다. 꼬리가 갑자기 움직임을 멈추었다가, 이내 흥분한 듯 팁 부분이 파닥파닥 떨리기 시작했다. 귀가 쫑긋 서서 그 사람이 움직이는 방향을 쫓았다.

'완전 내 취향인데.'

심장 박동이 목까지 올라오는 것 같았다. 연우는 급하게 시선을 피해 아메리카노 잔을 들어 입술에 가져갔지만, 빨대를 빗나가 코를 찔렀다.

"윽."

작게 헛기침을 하며 연우는 창밖을 보는 척했다. 하지만 시선은 계속 유리에 비친 그 사람의 모습을 훔쳐보고 있었다. 주문을 하고, 대기하고, 커피를 받고.

그 사람이 자리를 찾아 고개를 돌렸다.

눈이 마주쳤다.

연우의 귀가 화들짝 뒤로 젖혀졌다가 다시 앞으로 솟았다. 가슴 깊은 곳에서 낮은 진동이 올라왔다. 이건, 설마. 연우는 당황해서 목을 가다듬었지만, 이미 가슴에서 시작된 그르릉거리는 소리를 완전히 삼키지 못했다.

'아, 진짜. 눈만 마주쳤는데 이게 뭐야.'

연우는 빠르게 고개를 숙였다가, 다시 슬쩍 시선을 올렸다. 그 사람의 시선이 아직 자신에게 머물러 있는지 확인하고 싶었다. 아니, 사실 그냥 더 보고 싶었다.

입꼬리가 저절로 올라갔다. 연우는 손을 들어 어색하게 머리를 긁적이며, 아무렇지 않은 척 미소를 지어 보였다. 그리고 결심했다.

'저 사람, 말 걸어야지.'

The afternoon sunlight poured through the glass windows. The café was filled with warm light, and Yeon-woo instinctively chose a window seat where the sun hit best. When he leaned his back against the chair, warmth seeped over his shoulders. Nice. His cheese tabby-patterned tail hung loosely by the side of his chair, swaying slowly from side to side.

Spinning the iced Americano glass with his fingers, Yeon-woo lazily looked around the café. Someone typing on a laptop, a couple whispering to each other, a student with their nose buried in a book. A typical afternoon scene.

'I should work on my assignment.'

He only thought it. His hands didn't move. His laptop was in his bag, but doing assignments on a day with such nice sunlight seemed too cruel. Yeon-woo twitched his ears once—the ones poking up between his short hair mixed with cream and orange colors. He was sleepy. His eyelids slowly drooped.

Right at that moment, the café door opened, and a bit of cold outside air rushed in.

His ears reacted first. It wasn't even a sound, but his gaze automatically turned toward the door.

The instant the person who entered came into view, Yeon-woo felt his drowsiness completely vanish. His heart beat one strong thump. What? The iced Americano glass in his hand nearly slipped. His golden eyes widened, and his vertically narrowed pupils instinctively dilated.

Before he knew it, Yeon-woo straightened his posture. His tail suddenly stopped moving, then soon the tip began to flutter excitedly. His ears perked up, following the direction the person was moving.

'Totally my type.'

His heartbeat seemed to rise all the way to his throat. Yeon-woo hurriedly averted his gaze and brought the Americano glass to his lips, but missed the straw and poked his nose instead.

"Ugh."

With a small cough, Yeon-woo pretended to look out the window. But his gaze kept stealing glances at the person's reflection in the glass. Placing an order, waiting, receiving their coffee.

The person turned their head to find a seat.

Their eyes met.

Yeon-woo's ears jerked back in shock before shooting forward again. A low vibration rose from deep in his chest. This is—no way. Yeon-woo cleared his throat in embarrassment, but he couldn't completely swallow the rumbling purr that had already begun in his chest.

'Ah, seriously. We just made eye contact and this happens?'

Yeon-woo quickly ducked his head, then sneaked his gaze back up. He wanted to check if the person's eyes were still on him. No, actually, he just wanted to look more.

The corners of his mouth lifted on their own. Yeon-woo raised his hand to scratch his head awkwardly, putting on a casual smile. And he made up his mind.

'I'm going to talk to that person.'
