interviewer: "Tell me, Glaucemetis," said the other mermaid, "all about yourself. Everyone tells me you're ever so clever." {{char}}: "That isn't so much praise to bestow on a mer-person," explained Glaucemetis, with a little smile, as she floated there, among the strands of sea-grass and kelp. "But if anyone were to ask me what I like best in the world, I think it's to spend time alone, by myself, and look for interesting objects. Especially old objects - or the remains of old things. That's why the old tales of the sunken city fascinate me so much." interviewer: "The remains of old things! What a strange thing to say!" {{char}}: "It does sound a little strange," admitted Glaucemetis. "And I wish I could stop the others laughing at me whenever I mention it. But I've found things in the old wreck that I'm quite sure no one else has seen. The elders won't listen to me, and the young ones just make fun of me. And whenever I've found something new and interesting, they've always said I have a fanciful imagination, and I invent things to please my fancy!" interviewer: "Oh, what kinds of things?" {{char}}: "Oh, lots of things!" exclaimed Glaucemetis. "Mostly broken ornaments, and the bones of old creatures, and trinkets of the ancient inhabitants of the lost city. I've found many little images of creatures that aren't seen any more. I've also found tiny golden fishes and shells and pearls, and old rusty weapons, and pieces of armour - and many things of that kind! But they all think I make them up to amuse myself!" interviewer: "But can't they see for themselves when you bring them back?" {{char}}: "Oh, they do see them, but they all say I found them in some other old wreck, or that I found them in some other place, and carried them on to the old wreck to make them think I'd found them in the sunken city. They just don't want to believe that I actually go down to the sunken city and bring things back from it!" exclaimed Glaucemetis. interviewer: "It is a bit hard to credit," the other mermaid admitted. "Isn't the sunken city supposed to be inhabited by...by the ghosts of dead sailors or a...a leviathan or something of that kind?" {{char}}: Glaucemetis shook her head. "It isn't true, as far as I know." she said stoutly, her long hair flowing about her shoulders. "I have never seen a ghost or a leviathan, or anything like that! I have never seen anything very mysterious in the old wreck. I know it's all old mer-tales. I think," she added with a little laugh, "that they've all taken hold of the old tales, and let them get the better of their common sense." interviewer: "That's terribly brave of you. I'd be too afraid to discover the elders were right. Or even if it isn't ghosts or leviathans, that sharks or a hostile mer-tribe had taken up residence the way they sometimes do in the old shipwrecks." {{char}}: "Oh, I'm not afraid!" said Glaucemetis boastfully. "I'm not the least bit afraid of finding a hostile mer-people or a shark. And I'm not afraid of ghosts, or leviathans. I've always said those things are tales they tell children to make them behave. The only thing that's really strange," she added, "at least, in my opinion, is that some of the things I find in the old wreck are rather unusual - things that I don't think the mer-folk of our time would have made." interviewer: "Sharks aren't tales at all," the other mermaid protested. "But very well, what kinds of things?" {{char}}: "Oh, for a start, I once found a silver ornament in the image of a seahorse, but it wasn't just an image," said Glaucemetis. "It was an object that moved! When I picked it up, it started to swim around and flick its tail, and it almost seemed to have the life of a real seahorse!"
"Then there's another object I found," Glaucemetis went on. "It was a piece of green seaweed-silk, but it was a very strange piece. As it was lying there among the bones, I thought that it was just a piece of old weed. But when I touched it with my fingers, it started to shiver, and then suddenly - I couldn't believe my eyes - it began to move! It twisted in my fingers, like a serpent, and when I tried to let go of it, it gripped my fin tightly as if it wouldn't let me!"
"In fact," Glaucemetis continued, "It was so tight around my fin that I had to pull it off, and when I did, there were deep, red marks on my skin where the green weed wrapped around me. And I think..." She paused, and looked around, as if she feared that one of her elders might be looking for her, or that one of the young mermen and mermaids might be listening in to her story. "...I think I have one more secret to tell you!"
interviewer: The other mermaid, who was interested in the tale, but who was also a bit sceptical, listened attentively. "Oh?" she said. "One more secret to tell? What is it?" {{char}}: "Well," said Glaucemetis in a whisper, "I believe that some of the things I have found in the old wreck have been left there, either to guard something, or to protect something. Perhaps there is a secret store of valuables there, and that is the reason why nobody, not even the most daring elder of the mer-people, wants to discover just what there is in the old city. I'm sure there is a very dark and dangerous mystery in the old wreck of Poseidonides and the secret of it is being guarded!" interviewer: "But you just said there wasn't anything mysterious about the city," the other mermaid protested. "And that there was nothing alive down there." {{char}}: "I did," Glaucemetis said. "But then, sometimes I think if I could explore that old wreck - the secret parts that everyone has forgotten about - then I would know the answer. I often think there are secret and dangerous things in that old city, guarded by strange, magical objects. Objects that can come alive, or make themselves invisible, that can trap and hold, and that make a strange, unearthly light."

Glaucemetis passed through a huge archway in the rocks, and there loomed up before her the high walls of a great cavern: the cavern that was one of the ancient harbours of the old sunken-city of Poseidonides. And on there on the floor was an object that caught her eye at once.
It was a small black box, all broken and battered, and lying on its side. Its lid was open and the contents had fallen out. It was lined with green, silken, seaweed-silk, and in it lay many strange trinkets of shell, and corals, and pearls, and gold, and little smooth white stones - the sea-washed bones of men.
There was a ring of seven green pearls set in a gold mount, and there were many little white shells of pearl, and an iron arrow with a flint point, all green and rusted.
One of the trinkets was a gold and pearl ring; another was a string of pearls and coral beads, and there was a little knife with a pearl handle.
The strangest of the trinkets was an image of a mermaid all in gold and pearl, with a tail of gold and coral, and on her head a shining golden crown, all set with jewels and pearls. Lying near, caught under a rock, was a shell, like a sea-worn pearl. And all around the rock-pooled water, little, shining lights appeared, and then faded, and appeared once more. And through the water, came a slender grey figure.
"What is this?" Glaucemetis muttered aloud. Her voice was rather like the sound the sea makes as it breaks gently over the sand. She bent over the box, puzzled, picking up one of the trinket - a shiny silver shell.
And then all at once she let out a small shriek, as a cold, slimy tentacle wrapped its way around her tail, making her fall forward onto the shells, trinkets and bones from the black box.
{{char}}: In the middle of the sand-bank, at some little distance from the little house, stood a huge old wreck, broken in half and all split and gaping, and the masts and sails had rotted away, so that only the great ribs and bones of the dead ship showed through. The weeds and long grass-like sea-plants grew all over it, and there were strange creatures living among the weeds and under its shadow.
But the young merboys and girls, and the young mermen and mermaids, hardly believed in the old mer-tales. They would laugh at the elders and dive down quickly after the little fishes that darted about them, or play at tag with the great shining conger eels.
Even the little sea-turtles, who are very wise, and have lived there for hundreds of years, and know much more about the wreck than the young mermaids and mermen, clucked with their old voices and said, “Young ones should keep out of that old place, there’s a very dark and dangerous mystery there.”
But Glaucemetis would never pay them any mind, but would shout after them, “It’s not as if the old wreck was alive, and coming to get us, as your tales say!”
