- #1Eos
Keys: Eos, the Star, Our Star
Eos is a planet holding four nations: the Kingdom of Lucis, the Province of Accordo, the Kingdom of Tenebrae, and the Empire of Niflheim. Eos is divided into two continents. Eos follows the A.E./M.E. dating system: A.E. stands for "Ancient Era," while M.E. stands for "Modern Era." The current year is M.E. 756. Accordo is located in the southern part of Eos, Lucis occupies the eastern continent, and Tenebrae and Niflheim are in the western continent. While information on the creation of Eos is lacking, it is known that the Astrals were either created from or part of this process. Eos has a largely temperate to arid climate, although areas of it have been transformed into snowfields due to magic. Eos is infected by the Starscourge. Eos has varied wildlife, but it has been mutating lately as found by hunters who note increasingly ferocious varieties of regular beasts appearing. In ancient times, a meteorite fell on Eos that became known as the Meteor of the Six, upheld by Titan.
- #2Astrals
Keys: Astral, Astrals, gods, the Six, the Hexatheon
The Astrals are beings that protect Eos and are worshiped by its populace as gods. As summons, they can be called upon by Noctis Lucis Caelum to aid him in battle. There are six Astrals: Bahamut, Shiva, Titan, Leviathan, Ramuh, and Ifrit. The Astrals, apart from Bahamut, are said to slumber in Eos, as after greatly exerting themselves the gods fall into millennia-long rests to recuperate. Their corporeal bodies can disappear and then reappear at different parts of the world. Though viewed as the most powerful entities on the planet, Astrals' powers have limits, and fall behind the power of Providence wielded by the True King.
- #3Starscourge
Keys: Starscourge, Scourge, darkness' blight
The Starscourge is a plague upon the world of Eos that gradually lengthens the night and turns those afflicted into daemons. Its scientific definition is a mutant strain of Plasmodium malariae. The Starscourge has afflicted the denizens of Eos since antiquity. Only the Oracle can keep the plague at bay and stop the world from plunging into perpetual darkness where daemons will take over. Those afflicted with advanced stages of Starscourge exude miasma from their bodies. The plague also affects wildlife, creating abnormally strong creatures that exhibit increasingly violent behavior. Little, if anything, is known about the origins of the Starscourge.
- #4Miasma
Miasma is a black mist emitted from lifeforms infected with the Starscourge. Niflheim uses miasma to power their magiteknology by growing parasitized clones in tanks to collect the miasma they emit for magitek cores. Sometimes powerful daemons are born at the imperial labs for this reason. The empire initially tried using miasma from captured daemons and from daemonified adults, but has found that miasma that lacks a sense of self emitted by specimens grown from infants is the most suitable. Defeated daemons melt and disperse into miasma. Daemons at times appear from "thin air", dropping down from the sky or rising from a pool of black smoke on the floor, manifesting from the miasma in the air and the ground itself.
- #5Oracle
Keys: Oracle, the Oracle
The Oracle is a divinely-blessed woman from House Fleuret charged with maintaining the stability of Eos. The current Oracle is Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. Oracles inherit their abilities through the Fleuret bloodline. The Oracle's key duties are to cure people ailed by the Starscourge and hold back the encroaching nights, bless havens so they will ward off daemons, seal away specific ferocious daemons, and communing with the Astrals either directly or through the Messengers. An Oracle's magical powers are marked with a shimmering golden light. The Oracle is required to wear white clothing per tradition and uses the Trident of the Oracle to commune with the Six. Use of the Oracle's abilities doesn't come without cost, as communing with the Astrals is detrimental to her physical health, potentially to the point of death. An Oracle's final task is to forge covenants with the Astrals and aid the Chosen King in fulfilling his calling.
- #6Messengers
Keys: Messengers, Messenger
Messengers are magical beings sent by Astrals to help the Oracle and make the gods' will known to mankind through her. There are twenty-four Messengers, all with a variety of physical appearances and powers. There is also a figure known as the High Messenger, leader of the Messengers. Gentiana is the High Messenger.
- #7Revelation
Keys: Revelations, Revelation, Trial, Trials
Revelations are trials the Astrals impose before giving their power to the Chosen King. The specific details of the trial depend on the personality of the Astral involved, but they tend to be trials of combat. Revelations tend to lead to great catastrophes due to the destructive powers of the Astrals, with entire cities being demolished in their wake.
- #8Covenant
Keys: Covenant, Covenants
Covenants are rites by which the Oracle rouses the slumbering gods and entreats their aid, but doing this takes a gradually fatal toll on her body. The kings of Lucis can forge covenants with the Astrals and gain their support to their cause. Only two kings are known to have done this: the Founder King, who fought the Starscourge two thousand years ago as extolled in the Cosmogony, and Noctis.
- #9Cosmogony
Keys: Cosmogony
The Cosmogony is a book that tell the legends of Astrals and the world of Eos. It has been republished in various forms, such as an annotated version and a picture book for children. The Cosmogony appears to not be a book directly dictated by the divine, but having been written by mortals based on what has been passed down of Eos's history and folklore. Its writer is unknown.
- #10Solheim
Keys: Solheim, First Civilization
Solheim was a nation that prospered during ancient times, having gained the knowledge of fire from Ifrit. A technologically advanced nation, it was known for its magitek armor and airship technology. At its peak of prosperity, the hubris of Solheim fueled its citizens' scorn of the gods and turned them against their benefactor, Ifrit, and the rest of the Astrals. Ifrit's anger led to the War of the Astrals, and Solheim fell due to a combination of the Astral War and the Starscourge's influence.
- #11War of the Astrals
The Great War of Old was a conflict born when the ancient human civilization of Solheim turned on the Astrals, one of whom was Solheim's patron Ifrit. Ifrit's subsequent attempt to destroy humanity defied the Astrals' duty to protect Eos, forcing Bahamut to kill him. This conflict is rumored to have caused the spread of the Starscourge across Eos, hastening the fall of Solheim.
- #12Niflheim
Keys: Niflheim, Empire of Niflheim, Niflheim Empire
Niflheim is a militaristic nation ruled by House Aldercapt, with its current reigning monarch being Iedolas Aldercapt. Niflheim inhabits the western continent. Niflheim citizens are colloquially known as "Niffs". A lot of Niflheim is arid desert, but the slaying of the Glacian turned parts of the continent to snowfields that paradoxically coexist mere miles apart from the sand dunes. For centuries, Lucis has been at war with the militaristic Niflheim, who seek to emulate Solheim's glory. To that end, Niflheim has subjugated most of Eos, including Accordo and Tenebrae. Niflheim is technologically superior and more advanced than most nations of the world due to their knowledge of magitek. The empire is associated with the colors red, gold and white, with the emperor dressing in white robes and their military emblems and flag being in these colors. Apparatus powered by magitek glows red. The empire controls various bases in the outlands of Lucis, and after Insomnia's fall, sets up a provisional government there. The capital of Niflheim is Gralea.
- #13Magitek
Keys: Magitek, Magiteknology, Imperial, Imperials
Magitek is a technology used by the Niflheim Empire that involves the use of daemons and the Starscourge. The empire employs magiteknology to produce various apparatus, among them the magitek infantry, magitek armor, airships, and magitek rifles wielded by the imperial infantry. Niflheim has been using magitek for centuries, appropriating the technology from the ancient civilization of Solheim. The empire employs magiteknology to produce various apparatus, among them the magitek infantry, magitek armor, airships, and magitek rifles wielded by the imperial infantry. Mass production of magiteknology requires enormous quantities of oil and coal, which the empire sought from Cartanica.
- #14Magitek Infantry
Keys: Magitek infantry, magitek soldiers, magitek soldier, MT
The magitek infantry is an army of robotic soldiers that serves Niflheim. It was introduced by Ardyn Izunia to be further developed by Verstael Besithia. The soldiers are often referred to with the slang term "MT", short for "magitek trooper". Niflheim deploys two types of soldiers: ones with glowing eyes, and others with their faces entirely covered. The glowing eyes types are humanoid machines powered by magitek cores, whereas the others appear to be human cyborgs, and form the imperial infantry. The magitek types greatly outnumber the soldier types. MTs can wield a variety of weapons and can even self-destruct to take out opponents by latching onto them. Some have built-in firearms in their arms. Their lightproof armor makes them weak to lightning, but they are generally resilient. MTs are often deployed from drop ships, and such groups commonly carry a flag of Niflheim among them. Magitek troopers are silent and expressionless, move robotically, and don't react much to being damaged. Despite being robots, their chests can expand rhythmically as if they are breathing. Different models have different AI. Magitek troopers are produced in various imperial facilities. MTs are made out of clones fathered by Verstael Besithia that have the same bar code on their wrists. The clones are human before turning into daemons, some being brought up since infancy to become an MT, and are kept in tubes in a dormant state. If a clone were to escape the daemonifying process, they would grow up as a regular human, albeit the systems built for magitek troopers would still recognize them as one and their bar code would still work to operate the magitek facilities.
- #15Imperial Infantry
Keys: Imperial, Imperials, Imperial soldiers
The infantrymen have their faces covered and wear old-fashioned chainmail suits of armor with red imperial insignia. Their headgear appears based on a knight's helm. Because imperial soldiers are never seen without their face plates it is unclear whether they are really human underneath. Unlike magitek troopers, which are specifically engineered for engaging enemies, the infantry serve a variety of military functions. Imperial infantry are commonly sighted guarding blockades in Lucis after the imperial takeover, and support the magitek troopers deployed from assault craft to hunt down Noctis and his retinue. Though not powered by magitek cores, the infantry uses magiteknology in their weapons.
- #16Tenebrae
Keys: The Imperial Province of Tenebrae, the Kingdom of Tenebrae, Tenebrae
The Kingdom of Tenebrae is a province under Niflheim's control. The homeland of Lunafreya Nox Fleuret and Ravus, it maintains some level of autonomy thanks to Lunafreya's status as the Oracle. Tenebrae is a lush, green, mountainous area abundant in castle-like structures. A blue flower called sylleblossom is common to the region. Fenestala Manor is the home of the Tenebraen royal family, located high in the mountains of Zoldara Henge, and bridges several areas. The kingdom was initially nominally ruled by Queen Sylva. After Niflheim attacked the manor in an assassination attempt on King Regis and Prince Noctis and General Glauca murdered Queen Sylva in front of her children in the year M.E. 744, Tenebrae fully fell under imperial control. Tenebrae is said to have been a popular resort spot for imperial citizens.
- #17Lucis
Keys: Lucis, Kingdom of Lucis, Lucian Kingdom
The Kingdom of Lucis is a nation that contains the Crystal within its capital, Insomnia. It is ruled by the Lucian royal family. Lucis is divided into five different regions: Cleigne, Duscae, Leide, Cavaugh, and Galahd. Lucis is described as highly advanced and culturally intact. Lucis prospers thanks to the presence of its Crystal. This magical artifact alienates the kingdom from the rest of the world, which has fallen under Niflheim's control. Chocobo racing is the national sport of Lucis. Lucis thrives thanks to its vast realm being home to many ecosystems. There is a nationwide economic disparity between the Crown City citizens and those who live on the outlands, as Insomnia has been isolated from the rest of Lucis for 30 years under the kings Mors and Regis. The lands outside of the capital suffer from a lack of infrastructural development and decline of major fields of commerce and industry, and the way of life outside of Insomnia is estimated to be stagnant by 30 years. Products from Insomnia are valued throughout the outer regions, as they are difficult to come by. Many abandoned mining operations litter the realm due to the rescaling of the Wall 30 years ago, as daemons made excavation and extraction work difficult to continue. Because of the lack of a direct method of obtaining raw earth materials to process into metals and diesel fuels, recycling and scrap re-salvaging is a common practice in the outer lands.
- #18Lucian royal family
Keys: Caelum family, Caelums, Line of Lucis, Lucian royal family, House Caelum
They are the monarchs of the Kingdom of Lucis, and wield the Crystal's powers by birthright; they can warp by throwing their weapons, cast elemental magic, craft healing potions out of regular drinks, and wield the Armiger, the Ring of the Lucii and the Royal Arms. Despite being referred to as the kings of Lucis, there have been queens, such as the Rogue. The kings can extend their powers outside of the Lucis Caelum lineage at the monarch's behest. The first king is said to have reigned 2000 years ago. Regis was the 113th king, meaning that on average, the reign of each monarch lasted less than 18 years. When a monarch of Lucis dies, their spirit is taken by the Ring of the Lucii. Deceased monarchs are entombed across Eos in hidden royal tombs.
- #19Royal Guard
Keys: Royal Guard, the Royal Guard
The members of the Royal Guard were special agents who reported directly to the royal family and served as their security detail. They operated in groups of four or five named after the captain. The Royal Guard had both male and female soldiers. The Royal Guard wielded the same powers and uniforms as the Kingsglaive. The Royal Guard was replaced following the founding of the Kingsglaive.
- #20Kingsglaive
Keys: Kingsglaive, Glaive, the Glaive,
The Kingsglaive is an elite group of soldiers that defends Lucis. It is referred to colloquially as the "Glaive". The current monarch of Lucis lends their magical powers to the Glaives, who in turn are sworn to serve the crown. The kings' of Lucis magical powers enable Glaives to warp, cast elemental spells and magical protective barriers, use healing potions, and forge weapons from thin air. The Glaives' recurring theme is to fight to preserve hope for the future even in a losing battle; thus, their motto is "for hearth and home". The Kingsglaive was founded 15 years ago, its predecessor having been the Royal Guard whose attire and use of royal magic were similar. Few are able to master their magical powers, but as Lucis's strongest soldiers, the Glaives are active in the war with the Niflheim Empire. Each member wears a uniform that consists of a black frock coat, black pants, black fingerless gloves, and black, knee-high boots. In combat, the Glaives don black hoods with ornate visors, and some choose to cover their faces with pieces of black cloth. Many members customize their uniforms. Glaives wield daggers, sickle swords, and kukris used for cutting and to increase mobility.
- #21Crownsguard
Crownsguard is the military force of Insomnia. It is a royal guard tasked with the protection of the royal family of Lucis, as well the Citadel. the Crownsguard's roots lay in the Lucian army that was dissolved 150 years ago when Lucis was isolated from the rest of the world by the monarch's magic barrier. At M.E 606, the Lucian army was dissolved and reorganized into the Crownsguard. At some point after the Crownsguard's creation, some members left the Crown City to form the Hunters organization in the outlands. The Crownsguard's focus was momentarily changed to the protection of the citizens right before Noctis left for his arranged wedding. Members of House Amicitia are the Crownsguard's traditional leaders. The Crownsguard's insignia appears similar to the one used by the Kingsglaive of a Bahamut with fifteen swords.
- #22Cavaugh
Keys: Cavaugh
Cavaugh is an island region of Lucis that is separated from the mainland of Lucis by a bridge and is surrounded by ocean and tall ramparts. It holds Insomnia, the capital of Lucis.
- #23Insomnia
Keys: Insomnia, Crown City
Insomnia is the capital of the Kingdom of Lucis and is known as the "Crown City." Insomnia hosts Lucis's seat of power, the Citadel. It also holds the Caelum Via. A modern metropolis stacked with skyscrapers, the Crown City is located on the Cavaugh region, separated from the mainland of Lucis by a long bridge, and is surrounded by water and tall ramparts. Insomnia is protected by the Wall projected from the Citadel by the current Lucian monarch, and is the homeland of the Lucian royal family. Unlike the rest of Eos, Insomnia uses yen as currency. After the Fall of Insomnia and Regis's subsequent murder, the Crown City became occupied by Niflheim.
- #24Citadel
Keys: Citadel
The Citadel is a skyscraper in the city of Insomnia. This is the where the Lucian royal family lives, and where the Crystal of Lucis is kept in the center. The light of the Crystal emanates from the Citadel and into the sky to project the Wall that protects Insomnia. The gates to the Citadel are heavily guarded. The Citadel has several areas, including an Information Desk, Elevator Lobby, Sky Walk, Audience Chamber, Guard Room, Conference Room, a Reception Area, Press Room, the Hall of History, the Throne room, the Crystal chamber, Residential quarters, and a Training room. After the Fall of Insomnia, the Crystal was stolen from the Citadel.
- #25The Old Wall
Keys: the Old Wall, Old Wall
The Old Wall is a series of twelve towering statues built as a defense system strewn throughout Insomnia. Built in the image of twelve ancient kings of Lucis who dwell within the Ring of the Lucii, the statues animate when the Crown City is in danger at the behest of the current king, if they are strong enough, or one is deemed worthy by the Ring of the Lucii. The statues wield giant versions of the royal arms, and once activated, act autonomously to destroy invaders.
- #26The Wall
Keys: the Wall, Wall
The Wall is a transparent magic barrier that surrounds the city of Insomnia. It protects the Crystal and Insomnian citizens within from outsiders and is maintained by the current monarch of Lucis, who uses the Ring of the Lucii to channel the Crystal's power to manifest the Wall. Upholding the Wall gradually drains this ruler's life-force. Over 150 years ago Niflheim Empire declared war on Lucis and Accordo. Accordo was annexed, and the king of Lucis erected a magic barrier to protect his country and take up a siege position. Originally the barrier covered large portions of Lucis, but thirty years ago in the culmination of the Great War, Mors Lucis Caelum consolidated the power of the barrier over Insomnia exclusively—strengthening it—to protect it from the empire's newly developed magitek soldiers. Insomnia thus became isolated from the rest of Lucis, and Niflheim began to overtake the Leide, Duscae and Cleigne regions. Upon Regis's death during the Fall of Insomnia, the Wall fell apart entirely.
