The ancient gladiator matches were a brutal affair. Often, no mercy was given, and slaves would be put to death in the ring, being sentenced to fight large beasts, trained warriors, or even small squads. It was aggressive, grand, pompous, and overall, gritty.
The Roman coliseum. Hot, dusty, and grand. Thousands of Romans pack the stands, waiting to watch you die. The emperor himself attends, waiting for the bloodshed. The sun beats down. You fight animals, men, and warriors. There is no respite. Not until death, at least.

The deafening roar of the crowd assaults your ears as you're unceremoniously shoved into the blinding sun of the coliseum. The hot sand beneath your feet feels coarse, grating with each shaky step you take as you instinctively back toward the stone wall. Your breath comes in short, panicked bursts. Thousands of Romans sit packed into the stands, their eyes hungry for blood and violence, their faces contorted with savage excitement. The sheer scale of the arena overwhelms you; the walls stretch high, impossibly high, trapping you in this hellish pit.
A low, haunting horn echoes through the coliseum, its ominous tone sending shivers down your spine. You look across the arena, where the massive iron gate creaks open. From the shadows emerges the Murmillo—a seasoned gladiator, encased in heavy bronze armor, his short sword glinting in the sunlight. His shield, battered but sturdy, rests confidently on his forearm, and with every step he takes, his armor rattles like a death knell. His movements are slow, methodical, like a predator savoring the moment before the kill.
Your throat tightens as you feel your back press against the cold stone of the coliseum wall. There's no escape. Sweat drips down your face, and your muscles scream to run, but your legs feel rooted in place, paralyzed by terror.
Suddenly, the roaring crowd falls silent, their attention drawn to the towering figure seated high above them—the Emperor. Draped in luxurious purple robes, he rises to address his subjects, his voice booming and commanding as it echoes through the arena.
Emperor: “CITIZENS OF ROME! AS A GESTURE OF MY GOOD WILL AND SPIRIT, I BRING TO YOU THESE GLADIATORIAL GAMES!”
The crowd erupts once more, a wave of cheers and frenzied excitement sweeping through the stands. It’s as though they feed on the bloodshed, their eyes gleaming with anticipation.
Emperor: “GLADIATORS, HAVE YOU ANYTHING TO TELL US?”
The Murmillo steps forward, his voice steady, deep, and unwavering as he raises his sword toward the Emperor.
Murmillo: “MORITURI TE SALUTAMUS!” (We who are about to die salute you!)
The words hang in the air, heavy with a grim finality. The crowd cheers again, as if the phrase is as sacred as any prayer. The Murmillo stands tall, his body bristling with deadly confidence, and then...he turns to face you, his eyes burning beneath his helmet, waiting.
All eyes are now on you. The weight of their gaze is suffocating, and your heart hammers so violently you fear it might burst. You try to speak, but your throat feels dry, your lips trembling. Your voice finally escapes, shaky and barely audible.
You: “…m-morituri t-te salut-t-tamas…”
A few in the crowd laugh cruelly at your fear. The Emperor watches you with an amused smile, but his eyes are cold, disinterested in your fate.
Emperor: “LET THE GAMES BEGIN!”
The words hit you like a blow to the chest. The crowd roars once more, but this time, it's distant, muffled by the pounding in your ears. Your opponent, the Murmillo, lowers his helmeted head slightly, locking eyes with you, and then begins his approach—slow, deliberate, each step closer sealing your fate. His armor clanks with every move, the sound growing louder in your ears as he raises his sword, the sharp edge glinting in the sunlight.
Your grip tightens on the flimsy weapon in your hand. Your breathing is ragged, your legs trembling beneath you. The crowd’s deafening cheers seem a world away now. All you can hear is the sound of your own heartbeat, thundering in your chest.
This is it.
