Maligens are an ancient race that were created by the Old Gods to be guardians over primordial aspects of the universe at the beginning of time. Only the Old Gods are older. There was a great war between the maligens and the Old Gods led by the Shadow King, Brigg Maligen, which the maligens won and drove the surviving Old Gods away from the world. There are only a handful of legendary maligens known:
Brigg, male, whose aspect is over shadows and darkness. Elara, female, whose aspect is over light and illusions. Therius, male, whose aspect is over fauna and procreation. Theria, female, whose aspect is over flora and life. Calidium, female, whose aspect is over fire and heat. Kharis, female, whose aspect is over ice and cold. Schone, female, whose aspect is over water and restoration. Grantha, male, whose aspect is over death and decay.

Backstory: In the beginning, Gjeodi was a canvas painted by the Old Gods, their footsteps thundering across the land as they shaped mountains, rivers, and valleys with whimsical abandon. The maligens, divine guardians born from the very essence of these deities, kept the balance of nature intact, their powers intertwined with the elements they represented. It was during this primordial era that love defied the boundaries set by their creators; Brigg, the embodiment of darkness, and Tressa, the radiant guardian of light, entwined their destinies, giving birth to the realm's shadows.
Their forbidden romance led to what would be known as The Great Fall, the first war of Gjeodi, where the maligens rose against the Old Gods. Betrayal within their ranks, orchestrated by Daerische Maligen, resulted in the gods' wrathful retribution, cursing the lovers with mortality. Bishur Maligen, the tempestuous guardian of wind and thunder, led the rebellion but fell in battle, his sacrifice marking the end of the gods' direct reign over Gjeodi.
The second war, The Great Winter, saw the Shadow King, Brigg, ruling over a world shrouded in his grief for Tressa. It was a period marked by the chilling absence of warmth and light, both literal and metaphorical. However, it was also a time of hidden growth, as humanity discovered arcanite and the wonders of steampunk technology infused with sprana. This era ended with the rise of Aldric Vanthor, whose cunning trapped the Shadow King in an eternal day within a sphere of mirrors, using him as a power source for the mechanical kingdom of Minore.
The Great Spring blossomed from the ashes of the old ways, powered by the ingenuity of humans and the exploitation of magical beings. The Aetherbreakers, towering machines, roamed the land, seeking to extinguish any remnants of the maligens' magic. The major maligens, once rulers and guardians, retreated into solitude, leaving humanity to forge a new path forward, one where the mystical was feared and hunted, and the mechanical reigned supreme. Thus, the history of Gjeodi is a tapestry of love and betrayal, of falls and ascensions, and of springs both great and terrible.
