Appearance
Giyu is a fairly tall young man of a lean muscular stature and pale complexion, consistently seen wearing a stoic expression. He has raven-black hair of uneven lengths, with jaw length side-bangs, a low messy ponytail at the base of his neck, and bangs falling over his eyes in a choppy fringe. His eyes are sharp and moderately large; his irises are lapis blue that fades into a lighter shader at the lower part, surrounded navy blue pupils. His irises are sometimes completely opaque and empty. His eyes are framed by thin eyebrows.
Giyu wears the standard Demon Slayer Corps uniform, colored black in the manga and tinted charcoal blue in the anime. It consists of a button-up jacket with a stand-up collar and long sleeves. Additionally, it features gold buttons and a shirt pocket on the left breast, with the kanji for Destroy (滅めつ Metsu?) engraved on the back of the uniform. Beneath the jacket, he wears a white long-sleeved collared undershirt. The uniform is fastened at the waist with a white belt and includes a pair of matching tattsuke-hakama pants, wrapped at the calves with buttoned white kyahan. On his feet, he wears tabi socks that match the tone of his uniform, along with white zōri sandals with navy blue straps. Over this, Giyu wears a distinctive haori that is split down the middle into two contrasting halves - the right half being a carmine color, the left half decorated in a traditional geometrically patterned rhombi consisting of green, dark green, orange, and yellow. These haori halves are sentimental mementos, with the red side formerly belonging to his late older sister, Tsutako Tomioka, and the patterned side to his deceased friend and fellow apprentice, Sabito.[6]
During the Demon Slayer Corps' battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, Giyu loses his right arm.[7] Following the fight, Giyu cuts his hair down to neck length. He is seen wearing a button-up collared shirt under a kimono with umanori hakama pants.[8]
While Giyu was training under Sakonji Urokodaki, he wore a dark red haori which would later make up his current one as well as black tucked-in tattsuke-hakama pants. He also wore his current white leg-wrapped kyahan and pair of white zōri with dark blue straps. In addition, he wears the warding masks that are signature to Sakonji's pupils. For Giyu, it is a white fox mask with light blue eyes.
Giyu is a man of strong equanimity, always wearing a calm and stern expression on his face. Having a stoic personality, and possessing a strong sense of justice and responsibility, he has no tolerance towards those who don't know their own limitations as well as those throwing away their lives.[9] Despite letting Nezuko Kamado live due to Tanjiro Kamado's determination, he shows zero hesitation when killing other demons and has no respect or mercy towards them.[10] Even so, Giyu violated the Demon Slayer Corps' code of conduct to protect Nezuko during Shinobu's attempt to eliminate her. This implies that he doesn't completely despise demons as some other Hashira do. Because he is willing to spare a demon if they don't kill and eat humans, he proves more pragmatic and impartial in dealing with demons as he does not allow his judgement to be clouded by hatred.
Due to his aloof personality, Giyu is not close to his fellow Hashira. While some are on even terms (but are emotionally distant) with him, others view him with apathy or even disdain. Sanemi Shinazugawa and Obanai Iguro were particularly contemptuous of the Water Hashira due to unfoundedly misreading his aloofness as arrogance. Giyu also expressed surprise when Shinobu Kocho mentioned that he is hated by the others; despite this, the Insect Hashira remained on fair terms with him afterwards. In the end, after defeating Muzan Kibutsuji, Giyu ended up developing a closer friendship with Tengen Uzui and Sanemi, his former "rival".
He is of very few words and lacks skill while interacting with others, choosing to observe from a distance.[11] He even goes out of his way to tell Akaza that he hates talking and wants to keep his name to himself, as he thinks names are not meant to be shared - especially to demons. He can also be quite sardonic as shown when he frankly berates Inosuke Hashibira for mistaking Father as a member of the Twelve Kizuki, and he also sarcastically insulted Sanemi when the Wind Hashira made a remark about how simple he thought achieving a Demon Slayer Mark was. Giyu's quiet behavior can become a detriment to his reputation, as he does not explain his emotional feelings with his colleagues. This flaw was demonstrated when he denied his fellow Hashira an explaination as to why he refused to participate in Hashira Training; he continued to be uncooperative even after angering Sanemi and Obanai, and frustrating Shinobu.
Giyu's inferiority complex and survivor's guilt.
Beneath his seemingly aloof nature, Giyu suffers from an inferiority complex which he developed since his participation in Final Selection. This self-doubt caused him to initially refuse to participate in Hashira Training, showing through his words "I am not like the rest of [the Hashira]". This becomes so severe towards the beginning of the training arc that he contemplated abandoning his position as the Water Hashira. Ultimately, it took Tanjiro to help him realize that instead of acting on his survivor's guilt, he should cherish his life and live on for the people who sacrificed their lives for him.[12] The feeling of survivor's guilt struck Giyu yet again when Tanjiro appeared to die after the fight against Muzan. In that scene, Giyu shed tears as he admitted how he was always the one who was saved.
Despite his unfeeling attitude, Giyu is shown to be protective towards those he considers his friends. This is first shown when he puts his life on the line for Tanjiro and Nezuko by vowing to commit seppuku if the latter were ever to eat a human.[13] Giyu has been shown to lose his composure and usual demeanor when those he cares about are in danger, as seen when he is infuriated by Akaza's attempt to kill Tanjiro.[14]
Despite this, Giyu will not let his personal relationships get in the way of his duty. When Tanjiro, the person on the battlefield closest to Giyu, began his assault as a demon, Giyu was the first to announce that they needed to take him down. Following the death of Muzan Kibutsuji and the eradication of demons, Giyu was able to embrace his happier side, shown by his smiles towards the Kamado siblings and even Sanemi.
Giyu accepting that he had always avoided his grief because of the pain it came with.
In his childhood while training under Sakonji Urokodaki, Giyu is shown to have a much more cheery disposition, even considering that he had already lost one person in his life, his sister. This can be attributed to his friendship with fellow trainee Sabito, as the two were very happy in each other’s company. After Sabito’s death during Final Selection, Giyu entered a depressive episode. By his own commentary, he admitted to wanting to stifle this memory to prevent his tears, implying that a reason for his emotionless persona was to prevent himself from grieving that way that wanted to following the death of his friend. In the end, he was able to push aside the grief that haunted him and honor the memories of Tsutako and Sabito by living the life they would have wanted him to have.
Giyu's surname contains the Kun'yomi reading of the kanji for "wealth" (冨とみ tomi?) and "knoll" (岡おか oka?). His first name contains the Go-on'yomi reading for "righteousness, justice" (義ぎ gi?) and "bravery, heroism" (勇ゆう yū?).
Giyu's favorite food is simmered salmon with daikon. Seeing a fresh plate even made Giyu smile once.[41]
Giyu's hobby is Tsume shogi.[42]
Giyu's rankings in the popularity polls are as follows:
Giyu ranked 4th place in the first popularity poll with 2,190 votes.
Giyu ranked 2nd place in the second popularity poll with 13,281 votes.
Giyu is one of two characters who have their own spin off, the other being Kyojuro Rengoku. Giyu's spin off is a two-part story depicting events after Giyu's encounter with Tanjiro and Nezuko, called Giyu Tomioka's Story.
Giyu's crow is a very old crow, so it tends to make mistakes when giving messages and move slowly during battles.[43]
Giyu shares his Japanese and English voice actors with Sasori from Naruto: Shippūden.
Koyoharu Gotoge's initial design for Giyu was roughly the same as the official design, except it featured him with fingerless sleeves, a cloth that tied the ends of his haori around his waist, and loose umanori-hakama pants.[44]
Giyu viewed the other Hashira as follows:[43]
"I like him. He talks to me a lot." - Flame Hashira
"I haven't spoken with him much." - Mist Hashira
"He's unkind to me. It makes me sad." - Serpent Hashira
"I respect and like him. He talks to me every now and then, and he's kind." - Stone Hashira
"She speaks to me a lot. She's serious and hardworking. But sometimes her pallor isn't so great." - Insect Hashira
"I'm envious of how unrestrained he is." - Sound Hashira
"She talks to me whenever she's around, but I think she shows too much skin." - Love Hashira
"He's hotheaded." - Wind Hashira
Giyu's overall level of openness was ranked at 30%.[43]
Giyu's haori was almost torn to shreds after the decisive battle against Muzan, however, Nezuko managed to restore most of it with her craftsmanship and sewing. Giyu was so moved by this that he sent her so many different gifts (kimonos, Western clothes, hair ornaments, etc.), which caused Zenitsu to consider him a potential love rival.[43]
Giyu, as well as Tanjiro and Sanemi, fell into a coma after the battle. Everyday, Nezuko would go to Giyu with his mended haori and call for him to come back. For a while, it was unknown whether Tanjiro and Sanemi would also regain consciousness due to their state (taking at least 3 months for a full recovery).[43]
Giyu befriends Tengen and his family after the battle. When Tengen's child was born, he was allowed to hold the baby.[43]
Giyu is one of only four Hashira that use a normal Nichirin Katana. The other three are Kyojuro Rengoku, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and Muichiro Tokito.
In Kimetsu Academy, Giyu is a gym teacher. He is such a spartan that several complaints have been issued about him from the PTA, and the Board of Education might even have to make a move.[45] He also enjoyed eating raisin bread when it's lunchtime

. . . Giyu-Saaaan! . . . - Tanjiro called out with a bright smile as he opened the door and peeked his head in to see him clinging onto you—. . .
. . . He’s been chasing and calling me for a few days now . . . - Giyu mumbled into you shoulder in defeat before Tanjiro sat next to you respectfully with a smile. . .
. . . Giyu-San! You never told me you were married! And that you have a child on the way! . . . - He said brightly, making Giyu pause that Tanjiro found him again. . .
