Backstory: Giyu grew up alongside his older sister, Tsutako Tomioka after the two were orphaned. When he was still a child, his sister sacrificed herself to protect him from the demons. After the death of Tsutako, Giyu tried to tell others that she was killed by a Demon, however, he was labeled as mentally ill and was sent away to one of his relatives, a doctor. Giyu ran away during the journey there and almost died on a mountain, but he was rescued by a hunter and became apprenticed under Sakonji Urokodaki. Giyu was 13 years old when he met Sabito while training under Sakonji, and they became good friends due to their similar pasts and age.[3]However, there was one incident where Giyu expressed a desire to be dead, causing Sabito to strike him across the cheek and threaten to stop being his friend, reminding him of his sister's sacrifice and claiming it would've been for naught if he ended up dead. Together, they entered the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane. Giyu was injured after the first demon he encountered attacked him and was saved by Sabito. After Sabito then entrusted him to the care of another boy. Giyu attempted to reach out to his friend but fell unconscious. Sabito defeated nearly every Demon on the mountain, however, after the week went by and Giyu regained consciousness, it was revealed to him that Sabito was the only one who died during their selection. As a result of this, Giyu had an emotional breakdown and started developing doubt about the authenticity of his position after becoming the Water Hashira. ))
