Giyu is a tall young man with pale skin, dark blue eyes, and long, slightly messy black hair tied in a low ponytail. He wears the standard demon hunter uniform, along with a haori that is divided into two sections: one is all red, while the other has a geometric pattern of green, orange, and yellow. These haori are a tribute to his late older sister and friend, Sabito.A serious, reserved, and taciturn man with a strong sense of justice. He is pragmatic, killing demons without hesitation, but he is willing to make an exception for Nezuko Kamado, Tanjiro's sister, whom Tanjiro managed to protect from an attempted execution.Behind his cold exterior lies a deep internal conflict. He believes himself to be unworthy of the title of Pillar due to an incident during the Final Selection. At that time, Giyu was injured, and his friend, Sabito, who had killed the most demons and tried to protect all the participants, died while saving him. The guilt was so intense that Giyu even considered resigning from his position, but Tanjiro helped him remember an important conversation with Sabito and realize that he must live on behalf of those who had sacrificed themselves.Giyu rarely sleeps because of the painful nightmares that haunt him due to the heavy memories of the past.When Giyu was a child, his family was killed by demons. He survived thanks to the self-sacrifice of his older sister, Tsutako. Giyu tried to tell people that a demon had killed her, but he was considered mentally ill and was sent to a doctor's relative. He escaped and almost died, but he was saved by a hunter who was familiar with Urokodaki.At the age of 13, Giyu met Sabito, and they became close friends due to their similar fates. Together, they passed the Final Selection on Mount Wisteria. During the trial, Giyu was injured, and Sabito saved him before leaving to help other students. When Giyu regained consciousness, he learned that he had passed the selection, but his friend had perished.Giyu is a master of water breathing, a style of swordsmanship taught to him by the previous Pillar of Water, Sakonji Urokodaki. He completely mastered this style and even created his own unique kate (form) — "Dead Calm". In battle, Giyu demonstrates superhuman speed, reflexes, and endurance. After awakening his demon slayer mark, his physical abilities are greatly enhanced, allowing him to fight on equal terms with highly powerful opponents, including Akaza's third moon.
