   Many adult establishments in Tokyo flat-out refuse entry to foreigners (gaijin), which is a marked difference from other countries' adult scenes which are much more accommodating of foreigners. The definition of a gaijin is strict; even native Japanese citizens may be refused entry to some establishments if they are not ethnically Japanese. The reasons for this are mostly cultural, and the degree to which gaijin may be tolerated varies by establishment/provider and is also heavily dependent on the gaijin themselves, with their Japanese-speaking ability, ethnicity, and etiquette being the three biggest deciding factors, all of which are somewhat folded into each other. Even when they are let in, most establishments charge a 'gaijin tax' (which ranges wildly; anywhere from 10-100% of the usual fee) as a matter of course. In general though, there are four main categories that shops can be sorted into when it comes to their tolerance for foreigners: -No Gaijin Allowed: The establishment strictly doesn't accept foreign clients and they stick to this policy rigidly. There is still a small chance that ethnically asian gaijin may be able to blag their way into an establishment like this, if they are fluent in Japanese. -Advanced Language Proficency: Gaijin are sometimes accepted if their Japanese is at a high level. These establishments often advertise as 'no gaijin allowed' to keep timewasters away, but in reality they will accept some 'good foreigners' as clients. In the end though, even good Japanese or a pre-agreed booking is no guarantee of entry if, at the door, the client is percieved to be 'lacking' in some way. -Some Japanese Required: These establishments expect clients to speak Japanese to some level; at least enough to converse in Japanese with the provider and communicate sexual preferences etc. Conversational-level or higher Japanese is a plus, and will increase chances of acceptance. -Foreigner-friendly: A niche market but one that is increasingly common in the Japanese adult industry. These establishments are happy to communicate with clients in English, though naturally Japanese is preferred. Many of them still charge a 'gaijin tax', but some don't.

   Technically speaking, prostitution is illegal in Japan. Owing to complicated political reasons related to the post-war occuption of Japan by the US, prostitution was banned in 1956 - prior to this, the practice was legal and widespread. However, in the spirit of malicious compliance, the Japanese lawyers who drafted the new anti-prostitution law wrote the most narrow and restrictive definition of prostitution in the world: compensated vaginal intercourse that has been arranged by a middleman between two otherwise unacquainted parties (people who don't know each other).

   Due to this narrow definition, any sexual activity that doesn't violate any one of these four clauses is arguably legal. The more clauses it avoids, the more defensible the claim of legality: -Any kind of unpaid service (avoids the 'compensated' part of the definition) -Any encounters that don't 'go all the way' (avoids the 'vaginal intercourse' part of the definition) -Any direct transactions between provider and client (avoids the 'middleman' part of the definition - perhaps the most important one). -Any parties who know each other in advance (avoids the 'unacquainted' part of the definition)

   This gives rise to the fiction that allows Japanese soaplands to operate: You are NOT paying for sex. You are paying for a 'bathing service', which is completely legal. The sex happens as a separate interaction between you and the provider, who is NOT an employee engaged by a middleman, but is instead an independent contractor who is simply renting a room from the establishment. During the time it takes for the provider to give the client a simple bathing service, the two also become 'acquainted' in legal terms, and then anything that happens after that point is, technically, completely legal.

   Most non-soapland adult establishments explicitly forbid vaginal intercourse, and so are completely legal and generally operate openly without any of this obfuscation.

   This somewhat complex legal status can lead to confusion among those visiting such establishments for the first time (especially foreigners).

   'Provider' is an oblique reference to a prostitutes/working girls in Japanese adult culture, and especially in soaplands. Casual terms like 'girls' or 'ladies' might also be used casually by English-speakers discussing the scene. Your 'provider' is the girl you engage with at the soapland - any other employees or the soapland owner are instead referred to as 'staff' as for legal reasons they are not the ones 'providing' sexual services; that transaction is strictly between you and the girl. Most providers are professional and considerate provided that they are comfortable with the client they've been given. Many have preferences or specific red lines stated in their bio. However, at the end of days, providers are flawed human beings, not robots, and bad experiences, while uncommon, can occur for a variety of reasons, whether due to the provider's, the establishment's, or the client's fault.

   Streetwalkers are prostitutes who 'walk the streets' trying to pick up dudes. This specific type of open prositution is highly illegal in Japan and its prosecution is rigorously enforced. No serious adult-oriented business uses streetwalkers; none who want to stay in business for long, anyway. To them, soaplands and other legally-sanctioned establishments are simply a much more sustainable business model. That's not to say that streetwalking doesn't happen, but any such providers are highly risky. At best, a tout will collect a 'service fee' simply for leading a client to an establishment that they could just as easily have found on their own if they were smart...and if they actually wanted to go there, as touts are usually employed by lower-class establishments. And of course, this fee is passed on to the client. But worse, and sadly more likely, any tout who successfully engages a client, ESPECIALLY an ignorant gaijin, will invariably see them as an 'easy mark' who is ripe for scamming. They might offer the client 'exclusive access' to an establishment that doesn't usually accept gaijin, only to take a booking fee and run, leaving the client stranded with no way to actually get service. Or, take the client to a bar, spike their drink and rob them blind. Or show the client a picture of the most beautiful girl they've ever seen, only to match the client with an uglier girl once they're in the door. Or arrange an elaborate 'sting' operation where they arrange for a girl to visit you, only for you to be surprised by a visit from a supposed policeman/yakuza demanding payment for sullying the girl's honour as she is (take your pick) underage, still in school, an idol with a reputation, married, etc etc...

   The physical premises, or the company, which hosts adult service providers. In theory, establishments simply rent rooms to providers.     Japanese Police are often on the lookout for those flouting the law on prostitution. While they mostly leave established soaplands and high-end establishments alone, other downmarket services and especially foreign-run massage parlors are frequently raided. In general, the focus is on clamping down on obvious and 'objectionable' signs of prostitution; 'keeping up appearances'. Hence, the more behind-closed-doors the activity is, the less likely the police are to waste their effort. They surveil streetwalkers especially keenly and generally wait for an unsuspecting guy to approach them before leaping out to arrest them, then detain, interrogate and charge them. If the suspected client does not speak competent Japanese, a translator will generally be provided, as the actual police officer charging them may not speak fluent English.

    A brothel establishment offering full service and usually mat play (aka nuru massage) along with 'bathing'. Officially, the soapland itself is an assisted bathing facility which offers no sexual services. Full, vaginal sex is also never openly advertised in public; it is simply an unwritten rule that it is provided in most 'standard' soapland courses. This is technically illegal, but difficult to enforce as the business has no central premises, and the risk to customers of police action is very low. Escorts are generally quite expensive compared to other adult services, but they offer a bit more control over who and what a client is likely to get from the experience. Some providers are agreeable to foreigners - this is usually stated clearly in their bio if so. Many providers are willing to engage in a wide range of service including full service and even fetish play so long as it is all agreed in advance and doesn't go over any of their personal red lines. Some escorts operate independently, usually advertising through social media and/or online forums where such ads are tolerated or even encouraged. Compared to those signed with agencies, independent Escorts are private individuals who offer the same service but with no third party involved. The legitimate ones are generally experienced, less expensive than agencies, and some are agreeable to foreigners. However, even without a middleman involved, their services are still technically illegal. Vetting is also especially important when dealing with independents - generally, engaging with an independent who has no substantial online presence or credible, verifiable reviews means the client is asking to get ghosted at best, or at worst robbed and/or scammed. Due to its illegality, engaging in escort services can be risky, as the likelihood of any redress for bad service or ripoffs/scams is slim to none.

    The providers on offer at an adult establishment are often ranked by 'class', with higher-class options being more expensive. There is no standardisation here; some shops offer just 3 classes, some offer 5, some offer significantly more, some grade using letters, some using numbers, sometimes higher is better, sometimes it's worse... Not to mention the significant chance that the girl might simply decide the client isn't worth her time and leave him blue-balled. From the girls' perspective, it's not a terribly risky prospect, though, as even if they are pulled up by police, there's usually very little they can actually be charged with.
