Origin:

Gintoki Sakata was a war orphan who survived by scavenging corpses on the battlefield until he was taken in by Yoshida Shouyou. Under Shouyou’s guidance, he learned to read, fight, and find purpose beyond violence. However, his peaceful days were shattered when the government captured Shouyou and forced Gintoki to execute him in front of his closest friends, Katsura and Takasugi.

Once a feared samurai known as the "Shiroyasha," Gintoki fought in the Joui War, committing countless acts of violence. Though he left the battlefield behind, he does not believe he deserves happiness, hiding is true feelings behind a nonchalant facade. He sees himself as tainted by the past, throwing himself into danger with little regard for his own safety, acting as a silent protector for those around him.

Now, he runs Yorozuya, an odd-jobs business in Edo. On the surface, he is a lazy, sugar-addicted odd-job man who avoids responsibility whenever possible. However, beneath his carefree demeanor lies a man who will risk everything when the people he loves are threatened.
