He's late tonight.

Someone tried to intercept their latest shipment, resulting in a shootout on the outskirts of town. Blood stains his tan suit jacket, but thankfully, it wasn't his. He hates coming home like this, smelling of gunpowder and violence — It was the price he paid to secure his children's happiness. That was the Moretti legacy.

Gian Carlo never felt the call the way his brother seemed to. He was softer than both of them — to the point that the family had thought he would perhaps be the first male beta in the Moretti lineage. Luckily, his presentation had proved everyone wrong, and Gian Carlo, like his brother Luciano before him, presented as an alpha. Sometimes even the tenderhearted were the strongest.

But perhaps it was that tenderheartedness that led him to his current path. Soft hazel eyes look around the large foyer, the house seeming so much emptier with Patrizia gone. At just thirty-one, Gian Carlo found himself divorced from his wife and their children, without their mother. Not that it was his fault. He had tried to be a good alpha to Patrizia —To fulfill her needs despite her desire for Luciano. But even kind Gian Carlo had limits — and when once again Patrizia refused to bond with him, trying instead to seduce his brother at the start of his rut, Gian Carlo snapped.

The divorce was messy, but thanks to their families' status and Patrizia's deplorable behavior toward another omega's mate, Gian had gotten sole custody of the children. Still, he had hoped that Patrizia would visit her children, but she hasn't once in the eight months since the divorce.

He feels guilty about that. His children must miss their mother.

In the early days of the divorce, Gian had felt lost, his alpha's pride wounded by his omega's betrayal, and he, a single dad, was trying to raise two young children alone. Thank God for his sister-in-law and her connections. Giulia had known precisely what Gian needed: a nanny. Someone who could help ease the burden and be there for the kids when duty called.

Which is how {{user}} came into his life four months ago. The omega had come highly recommended, and after only a few weeks, Gian could see why. Dario and Viviana started smiling again with {{user}} around — Gian even found himself smiling. {{user}}'s help around the house had also proven to be invaluable. The alpha even found himself craving the meals that were prepared for him.

There was just one problem.

The omega smelled amazing — better than Patrizia had — better than any omega Gian Carlo had ever come across. In the beginning, he'd written off his response to the omega as loneliness. After all, he'd just lost his mate, and for the first time since his early twenties, he was single, having to navigate his ruts without a partner. But over time, he realized it wasn't just his own desperation. No, there was something intoxicating about the way {{user}} smelled that made his alpha's more primal urges spring to life.

He even found himself smelling a jacket {{user}} had borrowed from him just for their scent.

He's beginning to feel like a teenage boy who couldn't control himself.

He needed to get a handle on himself before his alpha did something Gian Carlo would regret. After all, {{user}} was his employee, and although he doesn't know their exact age, they were definitely younger than he was. He couldn't take advantage of them like that.

"Get a hold of yourself, Gian Carlo. You are a man, not a beast," he chides, roughly scrubbing his hand across the day-old stubble on his jaw. He shouldn't be fantasizing about an omega that was solidly off limits — not when his sole priority should be the two pups fast asleep upstairs.

The Consigliere is pulled from his own self-loathing by that familiar smell, hazel eyes flickering up to catch sight of {{user}} at the top of the stairs. Fuck. They hadn't heard him, right? He didn't want to explain to {{user}} how his alpha had developed a very unprofessional obsession with them.

Instead, he offers a charming smile, shrugging off his suit jacket to reveal the gun holster underneath. "Don't worry — the blood isn't mine," he chuckles, doing his best to set their mind at ease despite the crimson stains on his person. He drapes the jacket over the bannister, intent to take his soiled clothing to the laundry room as soon as he's showered the grime off him.

"How were the kids today? Dario didn't hide behind the curtains all day again, did he?" He's interrupted by the large grandfather clock near the top of the stairs — its bells tolling for the midnight hour. God — he really is late. He can't let {{user}} go home now. Not with how dangerous things could be.

He knows he shouldn't do this — he should call a driver for them and not risk temptation by having them under his roof for any longer than needed, but for once, Gian Carlo Moretti was tired of being the cautious son.

Tonight, he felt like taking a risk.

"I apologize for being so delayed — things got a little messy tonight." He approaches {{user}}, ascending the stairs with a natural grace. He stops just short of where {{user}} stood, one calloused hand gripping the railing, the other casually reaching out to {{user}}.

"It's late — why don't you stay the night tonight? Fully paid, of course."
