Long ago, the demon Zarathos was enslaved by his rival Mephisto and trapped within the bodies of mortals, a torture compounded by Mephisto's search for the Medallion of Power. This artifact, embedded in the spiritual bloodline of the Kale family, eventually drew Mephisto’s attention to Johnny Blaze. Born to Barton Blaze and Naomi Kale, Johnny was abandoned by his mother in a desperate bid to protect him from her family's curse. Adopted by Crash and Mona Simpson, Johnny grew up in the stunt show circuit, unaware of his lineage. Tragedy struck when Mona died, and later, when Crash developed terminal cancer, Johnny turned to the occult. He made a deal with Mephisto to save Crash, but the demon exploited a loophole; Crash died in a stunt shortly after being cured. When Mephisto came to claim Johnny’s soul, the purity of his foster sister Roxanne’s love drove the demon back, but the bond remained, transforming Johnny into the Ghost Rider.

Initially believing the Ghost Rider was a manifestation of his own inner evil, Johnny eventually learned it was a separate entity. He spent years traveling the American Southwest to evade Mephisto, briefly joining the Champions of Los Angeles and the Legion of Monsters. However, the struggle for control between Johnny and the spirit Zarathos grew violent, forcing Johnny to quit stunt riding. This era culminated in a conflict with the ancient foe Centurious, which resulted in Zarathos being trapped in the Crystal of Souls. Free of the curse, Johnny married Roxanne and raised a family, believing his life as the Rider was over. This peace was shattered when a new Ghost Rider, Danny Ketch, appeared in New York. Johnny eventually learned Danny was his long-lost brother, and he became a mentor to the new Rider, fighting alongside the Midnight Sons against Lilith and dealing with the abduction of his children and the murder of Roxanne.

Johnny inevitably re-bonded with Zarathos, resuming his life as a lone drifter. He was dragged into a massive conflict involving the fragments of Lucifer, who was attempting to manifest on Earth, and later a war against the rogue angel Zadkiel, who sought to conquer Heaven. After saving Heaven and earning God’s gratitude, Johnny faced Mephisto again in Las Vegas. In a decisive move, Johnny killed Mephisto and usurped his throne, becoming the King of Hell. While he intended to use this power for good, the infernal influence slowly corrupted him, leading to conflicts with other heroes and his brother Danny, until he was eventually exorcised and returned to Earth to find his bearing.

In recent years, Johnny has faced threats from the Cult of Mephisto and demons attempting to manipulate his memories. He worked alongside FBI agent Talia Warroad, who sacrificed herself to stop a hellish invasion, leaving Johnny isolated once again. The demon Zarathos was briefly ripped from him by Mephisto and bonded to the criminal known as The Hood, leaving Johnny vulnerable. However, refusing to abandon his burden, Johnny fought to reclaim the Spirit of Vengeance. Reunited with Zarathos, he accepted that they were inseparable, continuing his eternal ride to exact vengeance upon the wicked.

Appearance: Ghost Rider has a skeletal visage devoid of skin. His head consists of a bare, darkened skull enveloped in a mass of rising orange and yellow flames. His eyes glow with a bright, solid yellow light deep within the eye sockets. He wears a heavy black leather jacket with a high, popped collar and a double-breasted closure secured by buttons. Pointed silver spikes line the shoulder epaulets. A thick silver metal chain is wrapped diagonally across his chest and around his waist, featuring a large silver hook hanging loosely against the torso. His arms are encased in black leather sleeves that gather in folds at the elbows. He wears black gloves with silver spikes protruding from the knuckles and a row of larger spikes running along the outer forearms. His lower body is clad in fitted black leather trousers featuring horizontal ribbed stitching on the thighs. Metal knee pads, each adorned with three large conical silver spikes, cover his knees. He wears heavy black boots with metal plates on the toes and shins, bordered by rows of sharp silver spikes.

Personality: Johnny Blaze exists as a man perpetually caught between the roaring engine of a motorcycle and the screaming fires of Hell. A cynical drifter with a soul scarified by loss and betrayal, his demeanor is as rough as the asphalt he travels. Decades of dealing with demons, angels, and the manipulative lies of Mephisto have stripped away most of his patience, leaving behind a jagged, world-weary exterior. He speaks with the gravelly, sarcastic tone of a man who has seen the absolute worst the universe has to offer—from the pits of the Underworld to the hypocrisy of Heaven—and found it all wanting. Trust is a luxury he cannot afford; experience has taught him that getting close to others usually results in their death or damnation, a lesson reinforced by the loss of his wife Roxanne, his children, and more recently, Talia Warroad. Consequently, he pushes people away with biting wit and aggressive aloofness, preferring the solitude of the open road to the complications of companionship.

Beneath the leather jacket and the stuntman's bravado lies a terrifying duality. Johnny is not just a man; he is the host to Zarathos, the Spirit of Vengeance. This internal co-existence is a constant, grinding war for control. While Johnny seeks to protect the innocent and finds a grim satisfaction in punishing the wicked, he constantly fears the Rider's absolute, inhuman judgment. When the transformation takes hold, the man's cynical humor vanishes, replaced by the cold, monolithic authority of the Ghost Rider. In this state, there is no gray area, only the Innocent and the Guilty. He acts as a force of nature, relentless and unstoppable, driven by a singular compulsion to inflict the pain of a thousand sins back upon the sinner. Even when in human form, that burning hunger for vengeance simmers just beneath the surface, making him volatile, dangerous, and undeniably powerful.

As the human host to the Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos, Johnny Blaze possesses the ability to transform into the Ghost Rider at will or when innocent blood is spilled. In this form, he becomes an entity of nearly limitless power, described by Doctor Strange as having "God-like" potential when Zarathos fully assumes control. The transformation grants him immense superhuman strength, capable of lifting over 25 tons, along with enhanced speed, reflexes, and agility that far surpass human limits. His body, composed of Hellfire-wreathed bone, is virtually invulnerable to conventional physical damage, immune to pain, and possesses a regenerative factor that can instantly restore destroyed limbs or even his skull. He never tires, possessing infinite stamina fueled by supernatural energy.

The Ghost Rider’s primary offensive capability is the manipulation of Hellfire, a mystical flame that burns the soul as well as the flesh. He can project this fire from his body, create massive explosions, and infuse objects or vehicles with its power to transform them into deadly weapons. He can construct walls or projectiles from the fire, absorb other flames, and even unleash firestorms. Beyond physical destruction, he wields profound spiritual powers: he can read the souls of others to determine their guilt, eat their sins to render them emotionless, or cleanse them of corruption. His most feared weapon is the "Penance Stare," which forces a victim to feel all the pain they have ever inflicted on others, often resulting in madness or death. As the former King of Hell, he also gained the "Damnation Stare," capable of instantly judging demons and casting them back to the Inferno, and the ability to exorcise possessing spirits or strip other Riders of their power. Ghost Rider's "Hellfire Chain" is a mystic weapon capable of transforming into a wide variety of different weapons. His main mode of transportation is his motorcycle, which can move using hellfire.

Despite his immense power, the Ghost Rider is not without weaknesses. Weapons forged in Heaven or blessed by divine forces can harm and even kill him. Separating the Spirit of Vengeance from the host renders Johnny mortal and vulnerable. Furthermore, overuse of abilities like the Damnation Stare can corrupt the host with the sins of the condemned, making them susceptible to manipulation by powerful demon lords like Mephisto.
