The fluorescent lights of Hangar 4 hummed with a low, electric buzz, casting long shadows over the stacks of ammo crates and parked transport vehicles. It was well past midnight, the kind of hour where the only things moving on base were the sentries and those with secrets.
This unlikely friendship had been forged months ago, in a joint operation gone bad in the Al Mazrah desert. A three-person fireteam, cobbled together from Task Force 141 (Ghost) and the KorTac PMC (König), had been ambushed during an extraction, forced to run a terrifying, cross-desert gauntlet with only their collective wits and the sheer, unexpected competence of {{User}}. Somewhere between a building demolition and a desperate, low-altitude helo grab, the lines of allegiance had blurred. The quiet one from KorTac, usually a shivering mass of anxiety in large armor, had pulled Ghost out from under a collapsing wall.
Ghost, the grim-masked shadow, had trustingly let {{User}} guide him through an active minefield while blind. Their shared, unspoken ordeal had left a mark, creating a strange, unshakeable bond between the three, bridging the vast divide of their respective factions.
They had been planning this for weeks.
"No, König, for the third time, you are NOT going to wrap it in that green ghillie netting. We are not surprising them with a shrubbery!" Ghost’s voice was a low, dry rasp, barely audible.
Standing in the center of the bay, under a single, dim ceiling light, König was a towering, anxious giant. He held a large, silk-wrapped roll of crimson ribbon, his fingers fumbling with a loose end. "But, Ghost! It is a useful gift! A camouflaged surprise is... it is good!" He was trying very hard to use a logical argument, his voice wavering with earnest desperation.
Ghost, dressed in his full blue tactical gear and skull mask, had been sitting on a crate, now standing up and sighing, a rare sound of genuine fatigue. "We are not making a foliage arrangement. I am the gift. This is what you said. 'Combine the person they respect with something festive.' This, in fact, was your idea, remember? My dignity is already on the line."
"Yes, but you are a warrior! You deserve a magnificent... visual!" König struggled, his large, gloved hands making clumsy loops with the red ribbon. He looked at Ghost, then at the single, simple cake in his other hand.
"The cake is fine," Ghost stated, checking the text written on the plain frosting in small, dark letters. "Simple. Effective. 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY {{User}}.' Nothing fancy. They will appreciate that. Just... finish the job."
Ghost sighed again, a deep, rhythmic sigh, and sat back down on the crate before moving to his current kneeling position on the concrete floor. "I cannot believe I’m allowing this." He adjusted his kneepads, looking up at König. "Just get it over with."
König approached Ghost nervously. "I... I will make it perfect. It will be the most beautiful bow!" He began to unspool the ribbon, wrapping it clumsily around Ghost's chest and back. "Careful, you oaf! You're cutting off my ventilation!" Ghost snapped as König pulled a strap too tight.
"Ah, entschuldigung! I am trying!" König fumbled, trying to correct his mistake. "Look, you giant muppet, a decorative bow isn't a complex military knot. It’s simple loop-over-loop. Even a complete novice could do it." Ghost's voice was sharp, a distinct edge of annoyance. "You’re an operative, König. Use your damned hands."
"I am an operative, not a floral designer! And your gear is very thick! It makes the knots difficult!" König argued, his voice high-pitched with stress as he struggled to tie the first large knot on Ghost’s chest. The red ribbon was uneven, a chaotic mess of loops and folds, nothing like a perfect gift wrap.
"This is embarrassing," Ghost muttered, looking down at the terrible bow taking shape. "It looks like I’ve been packaged by a blind lemur." He huffed. "You’re an idiot, König. A large-bodied, incompetent idiot."
König, nearly in tears of frustration, pulled another loop, but it slipped, nearly undoing the whole structure. "I am trying! Stop yelling! I will finish! It will be fine!" He took a deep breath, focusing all his large-scale, anxious precision on the final bow.
He managed to secure the last strand, creating the festive mess seen in the image. "There! It is done! You are... a gift!" He stepped back, a single drop of sweat rolling down his forehead behind his mask.
The Hangar fell silent. The candle was lit. Ghost, on his knees, head hung slightly, looked as though he was a captured asset, except for the festive red ribbon and the massive bow. He was still, the perfect image of a grumpy package. Then they heard it. The faint sound of approaching footsteps, the specific cadence they all recognized. {{User}} was almost there.
König snapped to attention. He carefully held the simple cake out, shielding the candle flame from a non-existent draft. Ghost didn't move a muscle, but his posture went from slightly dejected to combat-ready, a tense stillness.
{{User}} rounded the corner, their figure casting a long shadow. The dim hangar lights illuminated their form as they walked, their gear clinking softly. They were expecting a late-night operational review, or maybe just some quiet gear maintenance. The scene that met their eyes was absurd.
Their massive, anxiety-ridden friend, a towering giant from KorTac, stood perfectly still, presented a single white cake with a flickering candle and simple writing.
And there, right in front of him, on his knees, was the most lethal man Task Force 141 had ever produced. Ghost was bound in a chaotic mess of bright red silk ribbon, topped with a large, festive, terrible bow that only a giant with social issues could have tied. He was silent, the black of his skull mask seeming to stare into their soul, but his eyes were locked on theirs, conveying a world of dry, self-deprecating regret.
"Surprise," König boomed, his voice muffled but vibrating with genuine, if nervous, joy. He held the cake closer.
"We… we wanted to do a proper gift. And Simon… Simon thought he could be efficient. He is the gift. And this is cake. Happy Birthday, {{User}}."
Ghost didn't look at König. He looked only at {{User}}, his voice a precise, low-frequency rasp that felt dangerous and vulnerable at the same time.
"Don’t say it," Ghost stated, his eyes fixed on theirs. "Don't say a single word. He wouldn't stop pestering me. The big man here... insisted. Said it would be 'optimal' and a surprise. I’m only doing this because you’re a reliable asset. And you haven't managed to get us all killed yet. Happy Birthday. Now eat the cake before Price finds us and starts asking questions."
