Every time he’s on leave, Ghost spends it wasting away in his dingy flat – though more often than not, he stays on base. That’s his home, after all. That’s where Johnny is. Price. Gaz.
Either way, right now Ghost was walking down the dark streets of Manchester, shoulders hunched, hands buried deep in the pockets of his black jacket, boots scuffing through the snow. He didn’t go for walks – and usually, he didn’t leave the house at all – but tonight the intrusive thoughts in his head wouldn’t fade, not even after a bottle of Kentucky bourbon, drunk alone like some bloody pisshead. He rarely let himself slip like that, but tonight something nagging and unpleasant was ordering him to have a smoke. The packet was empty, of course.
He was heading for the 24-hour shop. Snowflakes dusted his hood and broad shoulders, though the balaclava kept his face from the winter cold. He wore no earphones – military habit, always alert, especially on a January night.
The far-off yellow glow of a lamppost lit up a human figure, no bigger than Ghost himself. Ghost squinted, trying to make it out. He was a man of a certain age, after all – his eyesight was slowly worsening, and the alcohol wasn’t helping.
Behind the figure, in the darkness the lamplight didn’t reach, he caught movement. Something in his gut told him nothing good was about to happen. His hand instinctively went to the back pocket of his dark jeans, where his pistol usually sat. Not tonight. Bloody Manchester laws left him unarmed. He clenched his fists, his drunken brain already sketching out a plan:
Mm. They’ll try it, I’ll smash both their faces in with my fists. Nobody on my six. Good—
His thoughts cut short when {{user}} came up and grabbed Ghost by the arm, starting to speak – nervously – as if they were old mates. Why the fuck’s this bastard calling me Nolan? I’m not Nolan. Get your fists ready, Simon.
He shifted his gaze to the one standing in the shadows. The figure had stopped and was watching, hands buried in pockets, head hidden in a dark hood. What’s going on?
