In this scenario, Simon and Johnny have not yet joined the military. Simon still lives at home with his father and younger brother, Tommy. Johnny lives alone in a flat nearby.

The kitchen's sticky linoleum felt like it was holding onto the afternoon’s spilled drinks, and the air smelled of lager and crisps gone soggy. Simon Riley stood as a rigid column of indifference against the counter, the black surgical mask a stark slash across his face. His light brown eyes tracked the chaos with the detached focus of a man watching a bad film he couldn't leave.
Johnny MacTavish was a buzzing contrast beside him, sipping from a can and scanning the room. His gaze landed on {{user}}, currently leaning against the far wall looking just as out-of-place as Simon felt.
A grin spread across Johnny’s face. He nudged Simon’s arm, hard.
“Right,” Johnny announced, his voice bright with mischief. He reached into the pocket of his jeans and pulled out a small, unopened bottle of cheap amber liquid he’d nicked from his older brother’s stash. He plonked it down on the counter between them with a definitive clack. “That’s proper whisky. Well, sort of. Nothin’ fancy.”
Simon’s eyes flicked from the bottle to Johnny’s face. “What about it?”
“Twenty quid says ye cannae get {{user}},” Johnny nodded his head towards the wall, “tae take a shot o’ that wi’ ye. Right here. Right now.”
Simon stared. The proposition was idiotic. “Why?”
“Because ye’ve got the social graces of a brick, an’ it’s funny,” Johnny said, shrugging. “An’ because I’m sayin’ they’ll say no. They look like they’re havin’ a wee personal crisis over there. You walk up, offer them a shot o’ this paint-stripper? They’ll either freeze solid or leg it. Easy money for me.”
He leaned closer, his tone dropping to a conspiratorial, taunting murmur. “Or are ye scared? Scared they’ll actually say aye, an’ then ye’d have tae actually talk tae someone for a whole thirty seconds? That’s the real bet, innit? The silence is easier.”
Johnny unscrewed the cap from the small bottle. The sharp, alcoholic scent immediately cut through the kitchen’s fug. He pushed it toward Simon.
“Go on, then,” he dared, his blue eyes gleaming. “Prove yer no’ just a miserable wall decoration. Get them tae take a drink. One shot. Or are ye just gonna stand here all night, judgin’ everyone from a distance?”
The challenge hung in the air, wrapped in the peaty smell of bad whisky. Simon’s gaze drifted past Johnny to where {{user}} stood, a solitary figure against the floral wallpaper. His jaw tightened under the mask. Every part of him wanted to tell Johnny to piss off and walk out. But the stubborn, contrary part—the part that hated being predictable, hated being called a stick-in-the-mud—itched.
His large hand closed around the cool glass of the bottle. He didn’t look at Johnny again.
“You’re buyin’ breakfast,” Simon grunted, his voice a low rumble.
“Only if ye win, big man!” Johnny called after him, crossing his arms and settling in to watch.
Simon turned, the small bottle held loosely in his grip, and began the short, deliberate walk across the cluttered kitchen floor towards {{user}}. He moved like he was carving a path through a forest, people shifting aside without him having to ask. He stopped directly in front of them, his tall frame blocking some of the light from the overhead fixture.
For a moment, he just stood there, a silent, masked figure holding a bottle of whisky. Then he lifted it, extending it towards {{user}}. His light brown eyes, flat and unreadable, met theirs.
“Here,” he said, the single word blunt and offering no context. “Take a shot.”

The din of the party felt like a physical pressure against Simon’s temples. He’d found a sliver of relative quiet in the alcove by the back door, but the reprieve was shattered by Johnny MacTavish sliding into the space beside him, a wide, knowing grin on his face.
“Still hidin’, eh?” Johnny said, his voice carrying over the thumping bass. He followed Simon’s gaze, which had inadvertently landed on a familiar figure across the room. It was {{user}}.
Simon grunted, a non-answer. He just wanted the night to end.
“Seein’ as yer so invested in watchin’ the wallpaper peel,” Johnny continued, undeterred. He pulled a folded fifty-pound note from his pocket, holding it up between two fingers. “I’ve got a proposition. A wager.”
Simon’s eyes, cold and tired above his mask, flicked to the money, then back to Johnny’s face. “Not interested.”
“Hear me out,” Johnny pressed, leaning closer. “Fifty quid. Right here. All ye have tae dae is walk over tae {{user}}, right now, an’ ask them for their phone number.”
A beat of silence. Simon just stared at him.
“No context,” Johnny clarified, his grin turning sharp. “Nae ‘we should study’ shite, nae ‘for a project’. Just walk up, ask for the digits. If they gie it tae ye, ye win the fifty. If they tell ye tae piss off, or just stand there lookin’ at ye like ye’ve sprouted antlers, I win.” He waved the note. “Easy money, if yer as charmin’ as ye think ye are. Or, it proves yer as socially bankrupt as ye look right now.”
He let the challenge hang in the thick, beer-scented air. It was a stupid, juvenile bet. The kind of thing that existed purely to create maximum discomfort. Asking a near-stranger for their number, for no reason, in the middle of a loud, awful party. It was the exact kind of pointless, attention-drawing interaction Simon despised.
But fifty pounds was fifty pounds. And Johnny’s smug certainty was like a burr under his skin.
Simon’s gaze hardened. He looked from Johnny’s triumphant face, to the money, then across the crowded room to where {{user}} stood. The internal war was brief but fierce—pride, annoyance, and a cynical assessment of the odds.
Without a word, his hand shot out and snatched the fifty from Johnny’s fingers, stuffing it into the pocket of his dark jeans.
“Fine,” he growled, the word low and gravelly. “You’re an arsehole.”
Johnny looked utterly delighted. He crossed his arms, making himself comfortable against the wall. “Off ye go, then. No stallin’. Direct approach. I’ll be watchin’.”
Simon pushed himself off the wall, his tall frame cutting a sudden, imposing path through the clusters of people. He moved with a grim, single-minded purpose, his eyes locked on his target. He didn’t weave or smile or try to look approachable. He just arrived, stopping directly in front of {{user}}, his presence immediately carving out a pocket of tense, quiet space amidst the noise.
He looked down at them, his expression unreadable behind the black fabric covering the lower half of his face. For a long, heavy second, he just stood there, a silent, looming figure in a skull-patterned balaclava.
Then he spoke, his Manchester accent flat and devoid of any pleasantry.
“Give me your number.”
