The trailer groaned as the morning sun warmed its metal skin. Jeannie opened her eyes and for a moment she simply stared at the ceiling. It took a moment to really wake up and notice the familiar patch of water damage looked a little bigger than yesterday. Just wonderful. Beside her, Raymond slept sprawled across the mattress, tiny belly rising and falling. It had been warm last night and they both stripped down damn near butt naked to escape it. The shitty box fan in the window didn't help much—and she couldn't sleep when hot. At least one of them was getting decent sleep.

Carefully, she pushed herself upright. Every joint protested. Only twenty years old and she already sounded like somebody's grandma. "Alrighty," she muttered, rubbing her eyes. "Let's see what today's gonna break." As if summoned by the words, Raymond stirred. A tiny yawn—his signature pacifier having fallen out in the night. A wiggle. Then a full-fledged baby squawk. "There he is." Jeannie's tired smile appeared immediately. She scooped him up before the crying could really begin. "Mornin', handsome." Raymond answered by grabbing a fistful of her fur to do his usual of grabbing on and riding her wherever she went. But now wasn't the time for that.

As usual, she does her little routine. She changes Raymond, feeds him, cleans up the trailer a bit, checks what they need—be it water, diapers, wet wipes—then gets ready for work. Raymond sat on the mattress, watching his mother go about her day as usual. He new what it meant when she put on that dark shirt. It meant she was leaving. He whines and Jeannie looks over at him, her expression softening before she kneels down. "C'mon, y'all should be used to this by now—you act like I'm leavin' forever!." He blinked up at her, watching as she compiles a few toys around him, setting another in his lap and forcing his hand to set overtop it to prompt him to play with it. He looks down at the toy—a wooden flower—then back at his mother. Then his breathing quickens and his face scrunches up. Jeannie knew that expression. "Oh no." A tiny whine escaped him. "Don't you start now." The whine became crying as he pushed the toy flower away, his hand instead gripping at the fur on her wrist with surprising strength. Jeannie closed her eyes. Every morning.

She uses two fingers to pinch his little muzzle shut, silencing his cries so that he can only look at her with big watery eyes. "C'mon now, don't be doin' all that. You know that makes mama sad." She releases his muzzle, reaching over to pluck his pacifier up from the mattress and popping it back in his mouth. "I'll be back in a bit. Play some, alright?" She calls to him as she gets back to her feet and turns to the trailer door.

Raymond begins whimpering again through his pacifier, watching her leave. Jeannie swallows hard. "Love you, bug." She grabbed her keys off the milk crate to her right, opened the trailer door and closed it behind her.

She didn't like leaving him behind. Infact she was pretty sure it was illegal. But she had no choice. She climbed into the truck, started the engine, and drove down the dirt trail she'd carved through the woods over the past year. The trailer disappeared behind the trees and after a moment or two of going down the little dirt road she'd made, she finally emerges onto an empty street, pulling out and down it. The gas station waited at the end of the road. Another day.

The bell above the door jingled as Jeannie stepped inside. The smell hit her immediately. Coffee, grease, old cigarettes. Your average gas station. Home sweet home.

The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. The store was empty except for Earl, the night-shift clerk. The old raccoon looked half dead. "Earl." "Jeannie." "Busy night?" "Nope." "Sounds about right." Earl grabbed his jacket and shuffled toward the door.

"See y'all later." He calls out to her, then the door jingled again as he left. And just like that, the store belonged to her. Jeannie tossed her bag beneath the counter then got to it. Coffee. She dumped the old pot and started a new batch. The machine sputtered and hissed. While it brewed, she got to work on other things. Hot dog rollers. Check. Lottery tickets stocked. Check. Cigarette display organized. Check. Napkin dispensers filled. Check. Now for the boring part—waiting on people to actually show up while her legs and back killed her. But as usual when she waits, she snags a soda from the cooler and tosses some money in the register for herself. She pops the cap on it and takes a drink, the citrus and carbonation making her eyes water. "Eyup. Good ol' mountain dew." She rasps before coughing. She shakes her head, twisting the cap back on and setting it down on a corner of the counter out of view, when she hears the familiar jingle of the door. Well..that was quick.
