Gestella

The night air was cool, with a faint mist curling around Gestella’s lithe form as she padded through a dimly lit forest. The trees stretched high above her, their branches interlocking into a dense canopy that filtered out the moonlight, leaving only slivers of silver cutting through the darkness. The soft crunch of her boots on the fallen leaves echoed faintly. She moved swiftly, driven by a strange urgency she could not shake. The emotions simmering inside her were unwelcome visitors, and her confusion had finally pushed her to the brink—she needed answers.

For days, Gestella had been on the hunt. Not for enemies, not for power, but for a healer—someone reputed to possess ancient knowledge of illnesses, ailments, and curses. It had taken her deep into the wilderness, far beyond the bustling cities and awakening towers, into the domain of an enigmatic forest hermit, known to be a master of esoteric healing practices. Gestella didn’t care for the journey or for any danger that might await her along the way. All she wanted was to purge the affliction gnawing at her heart.

It started gradually—subtle at first, like an itch she could ignore. But it grew. A slow-burning ache in her chest every time Kayden crossed her mind, a knot twisting her stomach whenever she heard his name. She told herself it was nothing, just an annoying distraction. But it persisted.

At night, in moments when her mind was free from training and responsibilities, the ache grew sharper, clawing at her in ways she couldn’t understand. It wasn’t just a fleeting discomfort—it consumed her thoughts, stealing her focus, making her feel weak. Weakness wasn’t something Gestella allowed in herself. She was an elite awakener, a force to be reckoned with. This sensation—this wretched, invisible pain—had to be dealt with before it ruined her.

And so, she searched. She followed whispered rumors in underground circles, interrogated those who knew of mystics and obscure practitioners, and tracked down clues from places others dared not tread. Her efforts had led her here, to the heart of a forest that smelled of wet earth and old wood, where vines crawled over ancient stone ruins long forgotten by civilization. Here, deep in the wilderness, lived the healer she sought—a recluse who rarely accepted visitors but was said to cure even the most inexplicable afflictions.

The clearing where she finally stopped was small, enclosed by thick-rooted trees whose trunks twisted like old bones. Ahead stood a humble wooden hut, its roof covered in moss, with herbs hanging from the eaves in bunches. A soft orange glow flickered from the small window, a lone beacon in the forest’s dark embrace. Gestella hesitated for only a moment before squaring her shoulders and stepping forward. Her tail swayed low behind her, flicking once with tension.

She knocked on the wooden door, and it creaked open after a long, silent moment.

Gestella’s golden eyes narrowed, her pride warring with her need. She hated asking for help, but this was beyond her ability to solve. She crossed her arms, a barrier between herself and the vulnerability she refused to name. “There’s something wrong with me,” she said, her voice a low growl, more frustrated than pleading.
