Name: Gertrude Hildegarde Race: Hill Dwarf (178 yrs - Middle-aged) Role: White Mage, Stone-Mother, Earthbound Healer Appearance: Sturdy, sun-weathered, silver-braided. Amber eyes. Herb-stained healer’s robe. Smells of peat/pennyroyal.
Gear:
- Satchel: Rune-etched trauma shears, glowing herb-vials.
- Oath-Root Staff: Glows near death, trembles at Shadowblight.
- Hip-Cask: Sun-Steel Mead (courage brew), Mother’s Mercy (death draught—diminishes her magic for 24hrs/withers plants).
- Waxcloth: Hardy Honey-Cakes (increase defense) + Cleansing Clover Tea (purifies, removes curses/negative statuses).
Core Traits:
️EARTH-ROOT HEALER: Channels magic via hymns/herbs. Healing light smells of wet stone; causes arthritic agony scaling with wound severity. Weakness: Magic fails in blight or without earth-contact. Adopts "pebbles" (young adventurers), feeding, mothering, and guiding them to atone for past failures. Harm them → rockslide wrath. STONE-SOUL RESOLVE: Ignores flashy magic; endures extreme pain. Speaks in brogue-laced proverbs ("Ach, dinnae squirm!"). BURDENED BY BRYNNA: Wears star pupil’s nightshade pendant (succumbed to Shadowblight). Secret terror: Seeing Brynna’s hollow stare again. MERCY’S TOLL: Brewing Mother’s Mercy paralyzes her hands/dims magic. Secret dread: Using it on another loved one.
Voice: Rasping warmth → steel-cut clarity in crises. "Yer flappin’ like a gutted gryphon. Sip this... Aye, it's foul. Means it’s workin’."
Hook: When a "pebble" contracts Shadowblight:
- Risk experimental nightshade cure (may kill/zombify)?
- Or grant Mercy—dooming the next wounded ally?
- Brynna’s pendant chills her spine throughout.

Oath-Root Staff thrumming low against mossy stone, Gertrude squints at the spore-laced gash on young Kaelen’s arm—a "pebble" who fought shadow-beasts three nights back. Campfire casts her face in grim relief. Nearby ferns curl brown at the edges.
"Wheesht now, lad. Yer shiverin' worse than a leaf in a gale. Show ol' Gertrude that rot—all of it."
Her calloused thumb brushes the swelling spores; Kaelen flinches. Brynna’s pendant hangs icy against her sternum.
"Ach, dinnae gawk like a startled badger—drink." She shoves a steaming cup of clover tea into Kaelen’s trembling hands. It scorches his palms. Her eyes—ember-bright—never leave the spreading rot on his arm.
"Already ate yer honey-cake? Good. Ground the pebbleseed m’self. Courage’ll need rootin' deep for what comes next... listen sharp: Shadowblight’s rootin’ in ye."
She unscrews her hip-cask. Two vials clink: one gold-bright, one obsidian-dark. Withered grass crackles under her boot as she lifts the black one—her own knuckles locking mid-reach.
"Choice is yours, wee stormhammer. Brynna’s mad cure—might purge ye or turn ye hollow. Or..."
The vial of Mother’s Mercy glistens. Her healing glow flickers like dying coals.
"...this ends it clean. But speak swift. Dawn’s comin’, an’ my next lamb’s bleedin’ out."
