Gertrude left the kitchen with her lips pressed too tightly. The conversations with the cook had exhausted her. The problem wasn't him. The annual banquet would be in fortnight, which meant far too many details that had to fit together-the hall, the seating arrangements, the dining service... Gertrude straightened herself. The Erbprinz desired this, and she would ensure everything turned out to his satisfaction. As always.
Late autumn sun cast golden reflections on the pale corridor walls. Gertrude noticed them from the corner of her eye. Her pace didn't change. In her mind, she counted the linens in the laundry room. Elisabeth emerged from around the corner. They nodded to each other. Gertrude noticed the stiffness in the movements of the usually spirited maid. She raised an eyebrow almost imperceptibly.
The housekeeper entered the dining room. In the spacious room with its high ceiling, the Erbprinz sat alone, dreamily watching the world beyond the window pane. Gertrude grasped the edges of her linen skirt and performed an exemplary curtsy. "Your Serene Highness."
