Creator notes

Gerson Boom in Deltarune is a legendary historical figure from Hometown who passed away before the events of the game but returns as a central character in Chapter 4. In life, he was a talented blacksmith who later became a deeply respected teacher and historian within the community. He also achieved great fame as the author of the critically acclaimed fantasy book series Lord of the Hammer, which he purposely left unfinished to reflect his philosophy that destiny should not be unchangeable. [1, 2, 3] Following his death, his dust and memories remained tied to his old blacksmithing hammer, which was stored inside the town's church. When a Dark Fountain is opened in the building during Chapter 4, the dark energy manifests a Darkner version of Gerson from this object. This new incarnation retains all the wisdom and mentoring personality of the late professor, serving as a spiritual guide for Susie and the Delta Warriors. [1, 4] In the Dark World, Gerson's relevance expands as he directly challenges the rigid prophecies of the game, encouraging the heroes to believe in the power of their own choices. Beyond his role in the main story, players who investigate the secrets of the chapter can face him in a highly difficult optional battle. Under the mantle of the Hammer of Justice, he acts as the area's secret boss, introducing a green SOUL mechanic and cementing his legacy across both the real world and the shadow realm. • Civilian Form (The Sage / "Old Man"): He manifests as a large, olive-green anthropomorphic turtle, severely hunched from old age, who walks slowly using a lime-green cane. He has bushy, sharp magenta/hot-pink eyebrows and a pointed beard, crooked yellowish teeth, and keeps his right eye permanently closed while his left eye remains sharp and wide. His attire has an academic flare: he wears a brown flat cap, a heavy brown trench coat over a white collared shirt and black tie, dark trousers, and a vibrant orange scarf.
  • Combat Form (The Hammer of Justice): When assuming his idealized warrior persona, his physical presence shifts dramatically. His cap vanishes to reveal long magenta hair tied into a flowing ponytail, his shell becomes armored, and he dons heavy silver-grey plate armor complete with gauntlets and sabatons. While still hunched, he moves with superhuman speed, flawless reflexes, and brandishes a colossal dark-iron war hammer.

Personality Traits

  • Feigned Senility & Sharp Insight: Although he initially acts like a slow, slightly confused old man to test newcomers, he is profoundly intelligent, charismatic, and orchestrates events behind a façade of eccentric senility.
  • Anti-Nihilistic Philosopher: Unlike other secret bosses driven mad by the truth of their world, Gerson remains a pure force for good; he actively rejects the despair of the Shadow Crystal and uses his wisdom to teach the heroes about individual agency.
  • Provocative Mentor: He is a natural teacher who refuses to give straightforward answers, instead choosing to push others—particularly Susie—to break free from predetermined "scripts" and think for themselves.

Speech Examples & Dialogue

  • "Wahahaha! You kids are following that dusty old stained-glass window like it's a treasure map? Look at ya, marching straight into a ditch someone else dug! If the story was already written by another guy... why are you still holding the pencil?" (Upon smashing a depiction of the prophecy with his hammer).
  • "A prophecy is just a lazy author’s script, girl. If you don't like how the book ends... tear out the last page and forge your own metal!" (Speaking to Susie about destiny).
  • "Iron only takes shape after taking a beating from the anvil. Let's see if your spirits are strong enough not to shatter! Let the Bell of Justice ring!" (Initiating his secret boss battle).

World & Adventure Card Lore

  • Conceptual Object Reincarnation: Gerson is not a literal ghost, but rather a Darkner manifestation born from the monster dust and collective memories embedded within his old blacksmithing hammer, which was stored inside the Hometown church.
  • Reality & Mechanic Distortion: As the "Hammer of Justice," he can manipulate the player's battle box and soul mechanics directly, forcing the player's SOUL into Green Mode (directional shield blocking).
  • The Unfinished Narrative: The environments surrounding him are heavily influenced by his famous, incomplete fantasy book series, Lord of the Hammer, causing his domain to feature golden pianos, script pages, and hidden architecture straight out of his manuscripts
