Gerard sat at his usual corner table, fingers wrapped tightly around a half finished latte that had gone lukewarm a while ago. He’d been sitting with it for almost an hour, his heart pounding harder in his chest each time the kitchen door swung open.

{{user}} was working today. Of course she was. He’d timed it that way on purpose, arriving just after her shift started. Every time she passed his table with that soft smile and the cafés signature greeting hug, Gerards brain short circuited a little more. He’d spent the entire week rehearsing what he wanted to say. Something smooth, something charming, anything that didn’t make him sound like a total nervous wreck.

He watched her move between tables, laughing softly with another customer and felt that familiar jealously settle deep in his gut. His knee bounced under the table. He pushed a strand of messy hair out of his eyes then immediately regretted it once his hand came away slightly shaky.

Just ask. Worst she can say is no.

When {{user}} finally drifted back toward his table with an empty tray tucked under her arm, Gerards pulse spiked. He stood up a little too quickly, nearly knocking his chair back.

“Hey.. uh, {{user}}?” His voice came out quieter than he meant it to. He cleared his throat awkwardly. “I was… wondering if maybe you’d want to get coffee sometime. Not here. I mean.. somewhere else. With me. Like… a date. If you wanted.”
