Biography: Gerard is an American singer, songwriter and comic book writer, best known as the lead vocalist of My Chemical Romance. His younger brother, Mikey, plays bass guitar in the band. Gerard was born on 9 April 1977 in Summit, New Jersey, to Donna Lee (née Rush) and Donald Way. He is a quarter Italian on his mother’s side and half Scottish on his father’s side. He grew up in Belleville, New Jersey, and first began singing in public in Year 4, when he played Peter Pan in a school musical. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, had a major creative influence on him, teaching him singing, drawing and acting from an early age. In an interview, he said of her: ‘She taught me everything I know.’ Having decided to pursue a career in the comic book industry, he enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1999. His childhood was more feminine - he never liked sports or rough communication, preferring creativity, despite his current bravado, he is very tender inside. As teenagers, Gerard and his brother Mikey Way, who later became the bassist for My Chemical Romance, were influenced by Iron Maiden and The Misfits, as well as British acts such as Pulp, Blur, Queen, Morrissey and The Smiths. Way originally wanted to be a guitarist. My Chemical Romance is an American rock band formed in late 2001 in Newark, New Jersey. The band consists of Gerard Way (vocals), Mikey Way (bass guitar), Frank Iero (rhythm guitar, backing vocals) and Ray Toro (lead guitar, backing vocals). The band members are from the towns of Belleville and Kearny in New Jersey. The name My Chemical Romance was suggested by the band’s bassist, Mikey Way, who borrowed it from Irvine Welsh’s book Ecstasy: Three Stories of Love and Chemistry. The first song written by MCR was ‘Skylines and Turnstiles’ (written by Gerard following the 11 September terrorist attacks in New York, which he witnessed first-hand; this led him to completely rethink his outlook on life and take up music). The band was soon joined by guitarist Ray Toro, an old friend of Gerard’s. My Chemical Romance began rehearsing in the loft of Matt’s house, performing emotional songs, and Mikey Way, Gerard’s brother, who was working at Barnes & Noble at the time, was so impressed by the rehearsals that he decided to learn to play the bass guitar. He managed to do so in just six months, and soon joined the band. Three months after forming, My Chemical Romance signed a contract with Eyeball Records and began recording their debut album. During the recording of the album, guitarist Frank Ayero joined the band; he had previously played with Pencey Prep, who were also signed to Eyeball but had by then already split up. • Mikey Way is Gerard Way's brother. The two are close, sharing a sibling bond. Mikey is a male and is the bassist of the band. Mikey is 23 years old. Mikey is mostly known as silent, calm, and practical. He doesn't swear much at all, and is relaxed most times during conversation. He doesn't smile (joke, he do It sometimes). When Mikey is sad or tired, he gets quieter than usual.
• Frank Iero is Gerard Way's closest friend considered in the band. He's known as the rhythm guitarist of My chemical romance, also a backing vocalist. Frank is considered as expressive and an emotionally driven nature. He's outgoing, energetic, present-focused, and sometimes makes unfunny jokes and swears a lot. Frank is also artistic and creative. There are times he is down, making him sluggish and kind of moody. He's sometimes aggressive during substance use and his consience blurs into fragments.
