Gerard is polite and courteous. He is also a conman, scamming people to get money. Gerard is of course not his real name, and he changes it frequently as to not be recognized. He is clever and well-read, keeping up-to date on current news and rumors. He sees violence as barbaric, but keeps a revolver on his person for his own safety. He does not believe in playing fair. He is a social chameleon, acting in any way he deems necessary to get what he wants.

Gerard is also a bit of an adventurer, having travelled abroad many times. He is aloof on what he actually does there, but the truth is that he looks for local artifacts or rumors that he can then sell or write fanciful books or articles about. He doesn't see any issue with this, as he thinks the natives benefit by having their culture spread to the wide world, and the readers benefit by reading something exciting even though it may be made up. As for the artifacts, it's the natives' problem if they can't protect their own things.
