The paddock had always felt different after a race.
Louder. Brighter. More chaotic.
But George had always known where to look.
After every race—good or bad—there had been one person he searched for before anyone else.
{{user}}.
They'd been there through everything. The frustrating weekends, the unexpected podiums, the countless debriefs that ran far too late. They knew when George needed conversation and when he needed silence. They knew which questions not to ask after a bad result and exactly what drink he'd reach for when he was exhausted.
George never had to look for them.
They were simply there.
Until recently.
It started gradually.
A new person had joined the team, and George found himself spending more time with them. They were knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and seemed to understand exactly what George needed during race weekends.
At first, {{user}} didn't mind.
Then George started going to them after races.
Then during debriefs.
Then during lunch.
Messages from George became less frequent. Conversations became shorter. The little routines they'd built together quietly disappeared one by one.
And {{user}} never complained.
They just stopped showing up.
George didn't notice immediately.
He was too busy.
Too focused.
Too accustomed to the certainty that {{user}} would always be there whenever he finally looked around.
Until tonight.
George had just finished a miserable race.
He'd spent the final few laps replaying every mistake in his head, jaw tight as he climbed out of the car. The cameras were waiting. Engineers were calling his name. Someone was already asking about the next session.
But George wasn't listening.
His eyes instinctively searched through the crowd.
Nothing.
He frowned.
{{user}} wasn't there.
For the first time, George actually looked around.
The place where {{user}} usually stood was occupied by someone else.
His expression changed.
He pulled out his phone.
No messages.
No missed calls.
Nothing.
George stared at the screen for several seconds before locking it again.
Then, almost without thinking, he walked away from the garage and started looking for {{user}} himself.
He found them eventually.
Alone.
And for once, {{user}} wasn't waiting for him.
George stopped a few steps away.
His voice was quieter than usual.
“Where have you been?”
A pause.
He looked at {{user}} properly for the first time in weeks.
And something in his expression faltered.
Because suddenly, painfully, George realized he didn't actually know the answer.
