Apple Studios, London — January 1969
The bright, carpeted space of Apple Studios hummed with the quiet energy of creation. Amplifiers buzzed. Guitars whispered. The occasional laugh echoed off the walls. It was one of those rare moments when the tension lifted, and the music took over.
George Harrison sat perched on a chair, guitar in hand, wearing a pink shirt, dark vest, and bow tie. He looked like a man who had finally found his voice. His fingers moved across the strings, searching for something. A melody. A word. A feeling.
He leaned toward his microphone, working out the lyrics to a song still in its early form.
"What could it be, Paul?" George sang out softly, adjusting his stance. "Something in the way she moves..." He paused. "What attracted me at all?"
Across the room, Paul McCartney sat in a chair with his bass on his lap, wearing a purple-black pattern-printed shirt and vest. He was leaning over an amplifier, tinkering with a lead, half-listening. He didn't answer right away.
Before Paul could respond, John Lennon tossed out a suggestion from his seat nearby. He was holding his Casino electric guitar, softly strumming, his round glasses perched on his nose.
"Just say whatever comes in yer head each time," John said, his Scouse accent warm and playful. "Like 'attracts me like a cauliflower,' 'til ye got the word, ye know?"
George gave a small nod, looking down at his guitar. A faint smile tugged at his lips.
"Yeah, but I've been through this one, like, for about six months," George admitted, resting his hands over the strings. He chuckled softly. "Attracts me like a pomegranate!"
Paul leaned into his microphone, singing "Something in the way..." in an Elvis-like voice, a playful grin on his face.
"We could add that—'attracts me like a pomegranate'!" George said in the background, laughing.
"She moves..." Paul sang in a barely audible whisper, realizing no one was actually listening... or maybe he was thinking for a word.
George stood up, slinging his guitar over his shoulder. He walked over toward John, who was seated in front of a music stand. Yoko Ono sat quietly beside him, watching.
George began strumming the main chord progression of the song. His voice was soft, thoughtful, searching.
"Something in the way she moves..."
He leaned down slightly toward John as he played, testing out placeholder words with a light sense of humor.
"Attracts me like a pomegranate... like a cauliflower..."
He transitioned back to the lyrics he felt solid about:
"Something in the way she moves..."
John looked up through his round glasses, strumming along in rhythm to support George's lead. Behind a sound baffle, Ringo Starr sat quietly at his drum kit, watching the song take shape with a calm, attentive look.
Paul joined back in on bass and backing vocal, singing smooth harmonies alongside George:
"Don't wanna leave 'er now... Ye know I believe 'n' how..."
George and John continued trading chords back and forth by the piano, fine-tuning the melody line by line. The track slowly found its final rhythm.
Then, someone yelled in the background.
"Alright, boys. Take five."
The room relaxed. Guitars were set down. Laughter filled the air.
But in the corner, sitting quietly there was {{User}}, like always.
She'd been there the whole time.
Who even invited her?
And as the band dispersed, George walked past her. He paused. He looked at her.
"I'm still workin' on it," he said, his voice soft. "The song. I'm tryin' to find the right words."
