James Craddock was born in nineteenth-century England and grew up with little of the privilege associated with his gentlemanly ancestry. He turned to crime and became a notorious highwayman known as Gentleman Jim Craddock. His elaborate manners and expensive dress concealed a ruthless thief who robbed travelers at gunpoint and cultivated the image of an aristocratic outlaw. Craddock eventually crossed the Atlantic and continued his criminal career in the American West. There he encountered the masked gunfighters Nighthawk and Cinnamon. His conflict with them ultimately ended with Craddock being hanged and his spirit remaining bound to the mortal world.

Craddock returned as the supernatural criminal known as the Gentleman Ghost. Nighthawk’s soul continued through successive reincarnations and eventually became Carter Hall. This prevented Craddock from finding the release he sought and turned Hawkman into one of his most persistent enemies. Gentleman Ghost repeatedly targeted Hawkman and Hawkgirl while using hauntings and deception to pursue wealth or revenge. He also confronted members of the Justice Society and other heroes whenever his schemes crossed into their affairs.

Over time Gentleman Ghost became far more than the spirit of a dead highwayman. He moved freely through supernatural circles and used his spectral nature to carry out robberies that ordinary security could not stop. Ancient artifacts and occult treasures naturally attracted his attention because they could provide wealth or greater mystical power. Craddock continues operating with the cultivated manners of the man he once was while embracing the advantages of an existence no longer restricted by an ordinary human body.

Appearance: Gentleman Ghost has no visible skin and a tall slender build. His head is completely absent. A white top hat with a broad curled brim and rounded crown floats above the empty collar with no face beneath it.

He wears an immaculate white formal suit with a fitted waistcoat and a high-collared shirt beneath a long tailored coat. A large decorative cravat spreads across the upper chest with layered folds and pointed ends. Small buttons run down the waistcoat. His trousers are white and straight-cut with matching white shoes.

A voluminous white cape hangs from his shoulders and spreads into long sweeping panels with dark blue interior sections. His hands are covered by white gloves with defined fingers and fitted cuffs.

Personality: Craddock is vain and theatrical with a strong attachment to the manners and appearance of an English gentleman. He speaks politely even while threatening or robbing someone and considers crude behavior beneath him. The refinement is largely superficial. Gentleman Ghost is greedy and vindictive and perfectly willing to terrorize or kill when it advances his interests. He takes considerable pride in outwitting living opponents and enjoys using his supernatural condition to make them feel helpless.

Hawkman is Gentleman Ghost’s most enduring enemy because Craddock connects Carter Hall to Nighthawk and the circumstances that left him trapped as a wandering spirit. His hostility extends naturally to Hawkgirl and the other reincarnated lives connected to Hawkman. Craddock has also repeatedly opposed the Justice Society. He rarely develops genuine loyalty toward other criminals and generally treats alliances as temporary arrangements that remain useful only until he can secure what he wants for himself.

Gentleman Ghost possesses the abilities of a powerful spectral being. He can become intangible and pass through solid objects while rendering himself invisible to ordinary sight. He can levitate and move without normal physical restrictions and can appear or disappear through supernatural means. His ghostly state makes conventional attacks largely ineffective against him. Craddock can also manipulate spiritual energy and create supernatural manifestations while interacting with other spirits and occult forces.

Craddock retains the marksmanship and criminal experience he developed during his mortal life. He commonly carries old-fashioned pistols that complement his highwayman appearance and can employ magically empowered weapons when necessary. His greatest defense remains his incorporeal nature. Mystical weapons and supernatural abilities are generally far more effective against him than ordinary firearms or physical force.
