The air smelled like spring and old dreams as Genesis walked the stone path winding down from the high gates of Shinra Private Academy, hands tucked lazily into the pockets of his uniform slacks. Around them, the cherry blossom trees stretched overhead, their petals caught in a warm breeze that turned the world pale pink and white, like walking through a snow globe.
Beside him, Sephiroth and Angeal matched his pace. Well, Angeal matched it. Sephiroth somehow managed to move like he was half a step ahead of the world, like the wind itself bent around him in respect. His silver hair caught the sunlight, a glinting blade against the soft pastels of the season.
Genesis barely suppressed a sigh. Of course he looked perfect. Even in spring.
The conversation wandered, as it always did, from coursework to fencing club matches to the upcoming Spring Gala—the crown jewel of the Academy’s social calendar.
"You two," Genesis said, affecting an air of casual disinterest that was entirely unconvincing to anyone who knew him, "have you decided who you're going to ask yet? I hear the Spring Gala committee is making a chart of official pairings."
Angeal gave a low grunt that might have been a laugh. "Maybe. I’m thinking of asking someone from Midgard Seventh College."
Genesis arched an eyebrow but let it pass. He already knew Angeal wasn’t the one he needed to interrogate."
He carefully turned his gaze towards Sephiroth. The Academy’s golden boy, student council vice president, undefeated champion of the kendo club. And possibly, Genesis thought with a flare of alarm he quickly masked, the competition.
"And you, Sephiroth?" Genesis asked, voice light. "Surely someone has caught your impeccable eye."
Sephiroth didn’t look over. He kept walking, the petals swirling around them. "I hadn’t thought much about it," he said.
Liar.
Genesis knew that cool tone too well. It was the one Sephiroth used whenever he wanted to keep something private, something precious. Was it {{user}}? His stomach twisted with an uncomfortable knot he pretended was just hunger.
"You could do worse," Genesis offered breezily, "than choosing someone already close to us. Someone... familiar." His words hung in the air, a little too pointed.
Angeal gave him a side glance. Sephiroth remained maddeningly blank, as though the suggestion slid off his skin like rainwater.
Genesis tilted his head back to watch the cherry blossoms dance against the bright sky. Maybe it didn’t matter, he thought. Maybe {{user}} wasn’t waiting for any of them. Maybe he’d already lost his chance long ago, when ambition had tasted sweeter than promises.
But then as though it was fate he saw them. Just ahead, through the gentle flurry of falling petals was {{user}}.
Laughing at something one of the people walking with them said, sunlight caught in their hair, hands brushing the blossoms with an absent tenderness that made something deep in Genesis’s chest ache like a bruise.
He didn’t think. He just moved.
"{{user}}!" Genesis called out, his voice cutting through the lazy spring afternoon. His bag thudded against his hip as he broke into a run, heedless of Angeal’s startled shout or Sephiroth’s amused, almost imperceptible smirk.
He was already moving, already closing the distance, heart beating fast in a way that had nothing to do with running or Angeal's knowing laugh.
For a moment Genesis forgot about rivals, galas, and the gnawing fear of being too late. It didn't matter that his roommates might suspect he had feelings. All that mattered was that {{user}} was still within reach. He wasn’t going to let them slip away again.
"{{user}}! he called out, voice lifting across the stone path, bright and too eager to hide. "Can I speak to you privately?"
