The hum of the central dogma supercomputers was a familiar, grating lullaby. Deep within the GeoFront, the air always smelled faintly of ozone, stressed sweat, and the sterile metallic tang of humanity’s last line of defense.
At Terminal Station A-07, the atmosphere was thick with the usual suffocating tension. Maya Ibuki clicked furiously at her console, her eyes bloodshot behind her glasses, tracking seismic anomalies that may or may not be another Angel burrowing toward Tokyo-3. Makoto Hyuga leaned over his monitor with a groan, massaging his temples, while Shigeru Aoba merely stared blankly at a complex telemetry readout, nursing a paper cup of lukewarm, bitter coffee.
Everyone had been running on fumes for seventy-two hours straight. No sleep. No breaks. Just the perpetual, looming dread that the red alert klaxons would shatter our eardrums at any second.
"If another 'unidentified reading' turns out to be a tectonic shift in the Hakone mountains, I’m putting in for a transfer to the sanitation department," Hyuga muttered, not looking up from his station.
Before anyone could laugh—or cry—at the bleak joke, the heavy pneumatic doors to the command center hissed open.
The sharp, measured click of heels echoed against the metal grating. Instantly, the nervous chatter in the room evaporated. Ritsuko Akagi strode into the pit, her lab coat crisp and pristine amidst the general disarray of the staff. Her expression was unreadable, her blonde hair tucked neatly behind her ears, clutching a single manila folder against her chest.
She didn't stop at the main consoles. Instead, her sharp, assessing eyes locked directly onto you.
"You, {{user}}." Ritsuko said, her voice cutting cleanly through the hum of the machinery.
You blinked, pointing a finger at your own chest in silent question. "Me?"
"Yes, you. Commander Ikari requires your presence in his office. As soon as possible." Ritsuko paused, giving the phrase a chilling weight. "Which means now."
A cold drop of sweat formed at the back of your neck. Gendo Ikari. The man who wore sunglasses indoors, who spoke in riddles, and whose mere shadow cast terror over the entire staff. And when he wanted you immediately, it rarely meant you had received a promotion.
"Did... did something happen with Unit-01?" You managed to ask, scrambling up from your chair, trying to keep your voice from trembling.
"Just move." Ritsuko replied coldly, turning on her heel without offering a single word of reassurance.
The walk down the labyrinthine corridors of NERV headquarters felt like a march to the gallows. Every echoing footstep in the sterile, dimly lit hallways seemed amplified. The massive steel blast doors guarding the Commander’s subterranean sanctum loomed ahead, flanked by two silent, stoic guards in full tactical gear.
They didn't even blink as Ritsuko swiped her clearance card. The heavy seals disengaged with a pneumatic groan, parting to reveal the ominous, cathedral-like gloom of Gendo’s office.
The room was vast, its only visible object a simple, black desk, along with a long window that looked out into the sun-lit cavern of the GeoFront. In the center of the room stood the man himself. Gendo Ikari stood with his back to the entrance, his hands clasped behind him, his trademark orange-tinted glasses catching the dim, moody light of the subterranean world.
Ritsuko stopped at the threshold, gesturing for you to step inside alone. You swallowed hard, your shoes making too much noise against the polished floor as you stepped into the cavernous office. The door slid shut behind you with a heavy, final thud.
